NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Israel settled at Shittim. The people gave themselves over to prostitution with Moabite women.	1 Mientras Israel estaba en Sitím, el pueblo comenzó a prostituirse con las mujeres moabitas,
2 These invited them to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down before theirgods.	2 que lo invitaron a participar de los sacrificios en honor de su dios. El pueblo comió de ellos y adoró a ese dios.
3 With Israel thus committed to the Baal of Peor, Yahweh's anger was aroused against them.	3 Así Israel se sometió al Baal de Peor, y por eso el Señor se indignó contra él.
4 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Take al the leaders of the people. Impale them facing the sun, for Yahweh,to deflect his burning anger from Israel.'	4 El Señor dijo a Moisés: «Toma a todos los jefes del pueblo y cuélgalos públicamente delante del Señor, para que se aplaque la indignación del Señor contra Israel».
5 Moses said to the judges of Israel, 'Each of you wil put to death those of his people who havecommitted themselves to the Baal of Peor.'	5 Entonces Moisés dijo a los jueces de Israel: «Cada uno de ustedes matará a aquellos de sus hombres que se sometieron al Baal de Peor».
6 One of the Israelites came along, bringing the Midianite woman into his family, under the very eyes ofMoses and the whole community of Israelites as they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.	6 Precisamente entonces, llegó un israelita trayendo una mujer madianita adonde estaban sus hermanos, a la vista de Moisés y de todos los israelitas, que lloraban a la entrada de la Carpa del Encuentro.
7 The priest Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, on seeing this, stood up, left the assembly, seizeda lance,	7 Al ver esto, Pinjás, hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, se apartó de la comunidad y, tomando una lanza,
8 fol owed the Israelite into the alcove, and there ran them both through, the Israelite and the woman,through the stomach. Thus the plague which had struck the Israelites was arrested.	8 siguió al israelita hasta la alcoba y allí los traspasó a los dos, al israelita y a la mujer, en pleno vientre. Entonces cesó la plaga que asolaba a los israelitas.
9 In the plague twenty-four thousand of them had died.	9 Los que habían muerto a causa de la plaga fueron veinticuatro mil.
10 Yahweh then spoke and said,	10 Y el Señor dijo a Moisés:
11 'The priest Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron has deflected my wrath from the Israelites, hebeing the only one of them to have the same zeal as I have; for which reason, I did not make an end of theIsraelites in my zeal.	11 «Pinjás, hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, ha apartado mi ira de los israelitas, porque ha demostrado en medio de ellos un celo igual al mío. Por eso yo no acabé con los israelitas, dejándome llevar por mis celos.
12 For this reason I say: To him I grant my covenant of peace.	12 Y ahora declaro: Yo le concedo mi alianza de paz.
13 To him and his descendants after him, this covenant will assure the priesthood for ever. In rewardfor his zeal for his God, he will have the right to perform the ritual of expiation for the Israelites.'	13 En favor de él y de su descendencia habrá una alianza que le asegurará al sacerdocio para siempre, porque se mostró celoso por su Dios, e hizo expiación por los israelitas».
14 The Israelite who had been kil ed (the one who was kil ed with the Midianite woman) was cal edZimri son of Salu, leader of one of the Simeonite families.	14 El israelita que fue muerto junto con la mujer madianita se llamaba Zimrí, hijo de Salú, jefe de una familia patriarcal de Simeón.
15 The woman, the Midianite who was kil ed, was cal ed Cozbi, daughter of Zur, chief of a clan, of afamily, in Midian.	15 Y la mujer que fue muerta se llamaba Cozbí, hija de Sur, el cual era jefe de un clan en una tribu madianita.
16 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,	16 Luego el Señor dijo a Moisés:
17 'Harass the Midianites, strike them down,	17 «Acomete contra los madianitas y derrótalos,
18 for harassing you with their guile in the Peor affair and in the affair of their sister Cozbi, the daughterof a prince of Midian, the woman who was kil ed the day the plague came on account of the business of Peor.'	18 porque ellos acometieron contra ustedes con sus malas artes, en el incidente de Peor y en el de Cozbí –la hija del jefe madianita y hermana de ellos– que fue herida de muerte de la plaga motivada por el incidente de Peor».
