NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Israel settled at Shittim. The people gave themselves over to prostitution with Moabite women.	1 Israel se estableció en Sittim. Y el pueblo se puso a fornicar con las hijas de Moab.
2 These invited them to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down before theirgods.	2 Estas invitaron al pueblo a los sacrificios de sus dioses, y el pueblo comió y se postró ante sus dioses.
3 With Israel thus committed to the Baal of Peor, Yahweh's anger was aroused against them.	3 Israel se adhirió así al Baal de Peor, y se encendió la ira de Yahveh contra Israel.
4 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Take al the leaders of the people. Impale them facing the sun, for Yahweh,to deflect his burning anger from Israel.'	4 Dijo Yahveh a Moisés: «Toma a todos los jefes del pueblo y empálalos en honor de Yahveh, cara al sol; así cederá el furor de la cólera de Yahveh contra Israel.»
5 Moses said to the judges of Israel, 'Each of you wil put to death those of his people who havecommitted themselves to the Baal of Peor.'	5 Dijo Moisés a los jueces de Israel: «Matad cada uno a los vuestros que se hayan adherido a Baal de Peor.»
6 One of the Israelites came along, bringing the Midianite woman into his family, under the very eyes ofMoses and the whole community of Israelites as they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.	6 Sucedió que un hombre, un israelita, vino y presentó ante sus hermanos a la madianita, a los mismos ojos de Moisés y de toda la comunidad de los israelitas, que estaban llorando a la entrada de la Tienda del Encuentro.
7 The priest Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, on seeing this, stood up, left the assembly, seizeda lance,	7 Al verlos Pinjás, hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, se levantó de entre la comunidad, lanza en mano,
8 fol owed the Israelite into the alcove, and there ran them both through, the Israelite and the woman,through the stomach. Thus the plague which had struck the Israelites was arrested.	8 entró tras el hombre a la alcoba y los atravesó a los dos, al israelita y a la mujer, por el bajo vientre. Y se detuvo la plaga que azotaba a los israelitas.
9 In the plague twenty-four thousand of them had died.	9 Los muertos por la plaga fueron 24.000.
10 Yahweh then spoke and said,	10 Yahveh habló a Moisés y le dijo:
11 'The priest Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron has deflected my wrath from the Israelites, hebeing the only one of them to have the same zeal as I have; for which reason, I did not make an end of theIsraelites in my zeal.	11 «Pinjás, hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, ha aplacado mi furor contra los israelitas, porque él ha sido, de entre vosotros, el que ha sentido celo por mí; por eso no he acabado con los israelitas a impulso de mis celos.
12 For this reason I say: To him I grant my covenant of peace.	12 Por eso digo: Le concedo a él mi alianza de paz.
13 To him and his descendants after him, this covenant will assure the priesthood for ever. In rewardfor his zeal for his God, he will have the right to perform the ritual of expiation for the Israelites.'	13 Habrá para él y para su descendencia después de él una alianza de sacerdocio perpetuo. En recompensa de haber sentido celo por su Dios, celebrará el rito de expiación sobre los israelitas.»
14 The Israelite who had been kil ed (the one who was kil ed with the Midianite woman) was cal edZimri son of Salu, leader of one of the Simeonite families.	14 El israelita herido, el que fue herido con la madianita, se llamaba Zimri, hijo de Salú, principal de una casa paterna de Simeón.
15 The woman, the Midianite who was kil ed, was cal ed Cozbi, daughter of Zur, chief of a clan, of afamily, in Midian.	15 Y la mujer herida, la madianita, se llamaba Kozbí, hija de Sur. Este era jefe de su clan, de una casa paterna de Madián.
16 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,	16 Habló Yahveh a Moisés y le dijo:
17 'Harass the Midianites, strike them down,	17 «Atacad a los madianitas y batidlos,
18 for harassing you with their guile in the Peor affair and in the affair of their sister Cozbi, the daughterof a prince of Midian, the woman who was kil ed the day the plague came on account of the business of Peor.'	18 porque ellos os han atacado a vosotros engañándoos con sus malas artes, con lo de Peor, y con lo de su hermana Kozbí, hija de un príncipe de Madián, la que fue herida el día de la plaga que hubo por lo de Peor.»
	19 Después de la plaga,
