1 Balaam said to Balak, 'Build me seven altars here and prepare me seven bulls and seven rams.'	1 Balaam dit à Balak: “Élève ici sept autels et prépare-moi sept jeunes taureaux et sept béliers.!”
2 Balak did as Balaam said and offered a burnt offering of one bul and one ram on each altar.	2 Balak fit ce que Balaam lui avait dit, et Balak et Balaam sacrifièrent un jeune taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.
3 Balaam then said to Balak, 'Stand beside your burnt offerings while I go away. Perhaps Yahweh wilcome and meet me. If he does, I shal tel you whatever he reveals to me.' And he withdrew to a bare hil .	3 Balaam dit à Balak: “Reste là près de ton holocauste et moi je vais faire un tour. Peut-être Yahvé viendra-t-il à ma rencontre et je te révélerai alors ce qu’il m’aura fait connaître.” Et Balaam s’en fut sur une crête.
4 God came to meet Balaam, who said to him, 'I have prepared the seven altars and offered a burntoffering of one bul and one ram on each altar.'	4 Dieu se présenta à Balaam qui lui dit: “J’ai préparé sept autels, et sur chaque autel, j’ai fait monter un jeune taureau et un bélier!”
5 Yahweh then put a prophecy into his mouth and said to him, 'Go back to Balak, and that is what youmust say to him.'	5 Alors Yahvé mit une parole dans la bouche de Balaam et lui dit: “Retourne vers Balak et tu lui transmettras cette parole.”
6 So Balaam went back to him, and found him stil standing beside his burnt offering, with all the chiefsof Moab.	6 Il revint donc vers Balak qui se tenait toujours près de son holocauste avec tous les chefs de Moab.
7 He then declaimed his poem as fol ows: Balak has brought me from Aram, the king of Moab from thehil s of Kedem: 'Come and curse Jacob for me, come and denounce Israel!'	7 Et Balaam proclama son poème: “D’Aram, Balak me fait venir, des monts de l’Orient le roi de Moab m’appelle: ‘Viens, et maudis-moi Jacob! viens et menace Israël!’
8 How shal I curse someone whom God has not cursed, how denounce someone God has notdenounced?	8 Comment maudire si Dieu ne maudit pas, ou menacer, si Yahvé ne menace pas?
9 Yes, from the top of the crags I see him, from the hills I descry him: a people that dwel s on its own,not to be reckoned among other nations!	9 Je le vois du haut des rochers et du haut des collines je le contemple: ce peuple demeure à part, on ne peut le compter parmi les nations!
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob? Who can number the cloud of Israel? May I die the death of thejust, and may my future be like theirs!	10 Qui pourra calculer la poussière de Jacob, dénombrer seulement le quart d’Israël? Que je meure de la mort des justes et que ma fin soit semblable à la leur!”
11 Balak said to Balaam, 'What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies, and youhave heaped blessings on them!'	11 Balak dit à Balaam: “Quel coup m’as-tu fait? Je te prends pour maudire mes ennemis et tu les bénis!”
12 Balaam replied, 'Am I to depart from what Yahweh puts into my mouth?'	12 Il répondit: “Ne dois-je pas te dire ce que Yahvé a mis dans ma bouche?”
13 Balak then said, 'Please come somewhere else. From here you can see only the fringe of them, youcannot see them al . Curse them for me over there.'	13 Alors Balak lui dit: “Viens donc avec moi à un autre endroit. De là tu verras le peuple, mais pas encore tout entier, et tu me le maudiras.”
14 He led him to the Lookouts' Field on the top of Pisgah. There he built seven altars and offered aburnt offering of one bul and one ram on each altar.	14 Il le conduisit donc au Champ-des-Guetteurs, au sommet du Pisga. Il bâtit là sept autels et fit monter un jeune taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.
15 Balaam said to Balak, 'Stand here beside your burnt offerings while I wait over there.'	15 Balaam dit alors à Balak: “Reste ici près de ton holocauste, et moi, je m’avancerai un peu plus loin.”
16 God came to meet Balaam, he put a prophecy into his mouth and said to him, 'Go back to Balak,and that is what you must say to him.'	16 Yahvé se présenta à Balaam et mit une parole dans sa bouche, puis il lui dit: “Retourne vers Balak et tu lui transmettras cette parole.”
17 So Balaam went to him and found him stil standing beside his burnt offering and all the chiefs ofMoab with him. 'What did Yahweh say?' Balak said to him.	17 Balaam revint donc vers lui, tandis qu’il était toujours debout près de son holocauste avec les chefs de Moab. Balak demanda à Balaam: “Qu’a dit Yahvé?”
18 Balaam then declaimed his poem, as fol ows: Stand up, Balak, and listen, give ear to me, son ofZippor.	18 Et Balaam proclama son poème: “Lève-toi Balak, écoute! Prête-moi l’oreille, fils de Sipor!
19 God is no human being that he should lie, no child of Adam to change his mind. Is it his to say andnot to do, is it his to speak and not fulfil?	19 Dieu n’est pas un homme pour mentir, il n’est pas un fils d’homme pour revenir en arrière. Dit-il quelque chose sans le faire? Ou parle-t-il sans agir?
20 The charge laid on me is to bless, I shal bless, and I cannot reverse it.	20 Regarde! Il m’a pris pour bénir, s’il bénit, comment dire autrement?
21 I have perceived no guilt in Jacob, have seen no perversity in Israel. Yahweh his God is with him,and a royal acclamation to greet him.	21 Il n’a pas vu de faute en Jacob, il n’a pas perçu de mal en Israël. Yahvé son Dieu est avec lui, chez lui on entend acclamer un roi.
22 God has brought him out of Egypt, is like the wild ox's horns to him.	22 Dieu le fait sortir d’Égypte, et lui donne les cornes du buffle!
23 There is no omen whatever against Jacob, no augury at al against Israel. Wel may people say ofJacob, of Israel, 'What has God achieved?'	23 Point n’est besoin de magie en Jacob, ni de sorcellerie en Israël: car en temps voulu sera prédit à Jacob, à Israël, ce que Dieu prépare.
24 for here is a people like a lioness rising, poised like a lion to spring; nor wil he lie down till he hasdevoured his prey and drunk the blood of his slain.	24 Ce peuple se lève comme une lionne, se dresse comme un lion. Il ne revient pas sans avoir dévoré sa proie, sans avoir bu le sang de ses victimes.”
25 Balak said to Balaam, 'Very wel ! Do not curse them. But at least do not bless them!'	25 Balak dit à Balaam: “Si tu ne le maudis pas, du moins ne le bénis pas!”
26 Balaam retorted to Balak, 'Did I not tel you? Whatever Yahweh says, I must do.'	26 Mais Balaam répondit à Balak: “Je te l’ai bien dit: ce que Yahvé dira, je le ferai.”
27 Balak then said to Balaam, 'Come with me now and I shal take you somewhere else. From thereperhaps it wil please God to curse them for me.'	27 Balak dit à Balaam: “Viens, je t’emmène autre part, et là peut-être ton Dieu trouvera-t-il bon de me le maudire!”
28 So Balak led Balaam to the summit of Peor, overlooking the wastelands.	28 Alors Balak conduisit Balaam au sommet du Péor, face au désert.
29 Balaam then said to Balak, 'Build me seven altars here and prepare me seven bul s and sevenrams.'	29 Balaam dit à Balak: “Construis sept autels à cet endroit, et prépare sept jeunes taureaux et sept béliers.”
30 Balak did as Balaam said and offered a burnt offering of one bull and one ram on each altar.	30 Balak fit comme Balaam le lui avait dit et sacrifia un jeune taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.
