Sirach 38

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 Treat the doctor with the honour that is his due, in consideration of his services; for he too has beencreated by the Lord.	1 Rendi onore al medico per ragione della necessità, perché egli è stato fatto dall'Altissimo;
2 Healing itself comes from the Most High, like a gift received from a king.	2 Perocché tutta la medicina viene da Dio, e sarà rimunerata dal re.
3 The doctor's learning keeps his head high, and the great regard him with awe.	3 La scienza del medico lo innarzerà agli onori, ed ei sarà celebrato dinanzi ai grandi.
4 The Lord has brought forth medicinal herbs from the ground, and no one sensible wil despise them.	4 Egli è l'Altissimo, che creò dalla terra i medicamenti, e l'uomo prudente non gli avrà a schifo.
5 Did not a piece of wood once sweeten the water, thus giving proof of its power?	5 Un legno non raddolcì egli le acque amare?
6 He has also given some people knowledge, so that they may draw credit from his mighty works.	6 La virtù di questi appartiene alla cognizione degli uomini, e il Signore ne ha data ad essi la scienza, affin di essere onorato per le sue meraviglie.
7 He uses these for healing and relieving pain; the druggist makes up a mixture from them.	7 Con questi egli cura, e mitiga i dolori, e lo speziale ne fa composizioni grate, e manipola unguenti salutari, e i suoi lavori non avran fine;
8 Thus, there is no end to his activities; thanks to him, well-being exists throughout the world.	8 Perocché la benedizione di Dio tutta empie la terra.
9 My child, when you are il , do not rebel, but pray to the Lord and he wil heal you.	9 Figliuolo, quando se' malato, non disprezzare te stesso, ma prega, il Signore, ed egli ti guarirà.
10 Renounce your faults, keep your hands unsoiled, and cleanse your heart from al sin.	10 Allontanati dal peccato, e raddirizza le tue azioni, e monda il cuor tuo da ogni colpa.
11 Offer incense and a memorial of fine flour, make as rich an offering as you can afford.	11 Offerisci odor soave, e il fior di farina per memoria, e sia perfetta la tua obblazione; e poi da luogo al me dico;
12 Then let the doctor take over -- the Lord created him too -- do not let him leave you, for you need him.	12 Perché Dio lo ha istituito; ed egli non si parta da te, perché l'assistenza di lui è necessaria.
13 There are times when good health depends on doctors.	13 Conciossiachè havvi un tempo, in cui dei cadere nelle mani d'alcuni di essi:
14 For they, in their turn, wil pray the Lord to grant them the grace to relieve and to heal, and so prolongyour life.	14 Ed eglino pregheranno il Signore, che secondi i loro lenitivi, e dia la sanità, alla quale è diretta la lor professione.
15 Whoever sins in the eyes of his Maker, let such a one come under the care of the doctor!	15 Colui, che pecca sotto degli occhi di lui, che lo creò, caderà nelle mani del medico.
16 My child, shed tears over the dead, lament for the dead to show your sorrow, then bury the body withdue ceremony and do not fail to honour the grave.	16 Figliuolo, spargi lagrime sopra il morto, e come per duro avvenimento comincia a sospirare, e secondo il rito ricuopri il suo corpo, e non trascurare la sua sepoltura.
17 Weep bitterly, beat your breast, observe the mourning the dead deserves for a day or two, to avoidcensorious comment, and then be comforted in your sorrow;	17 E per non essere calunniato, fa amaro duolo per lui per un giorno, dipoi racconsolati per fuggir la tristezza:
18 for grief can lead to death, a grief-stricken heart loses al energy.	18 E fa il duolo secondo il merito della persona per un di, o due, per evitare le maldicenze;
19 In affliction sorrow persists, a life of grief is hard to bear.	19 Perocché dalla tristezza vien presto la morte, e la malinconia del cuore deprime le forse, e curva il collo.
20 Do not abandon your heart to grief, drive it away, bear your own end in mind.	20 Collo star ritirato si mantien la tristezza, ed è la vita del povero, qual è il suo cuore.
21 Do not forget, there is no coming back; you cannot help the dead, and you will harm yourself.	21 Non abbandonare il tuo cuore alla tristezza, ma cacciala da te, e ricordati del fine.
22 'Remember my doom, since it will be yours too; I yesterday, you today!'	22 Non te ne scordare; perocché di colà non si torna; e non gioverai niente ad altri, e farai male a te stesso.
23 Once the dead are laid to rest, let their memory rest, do not fret for them, once their spirit departs.	23 Ricordati di quel, che o stato di me; perocché lo stesso sarà di te: oggi a me, domani a te.
24 Leisure gives the scribe the chance to acquire wisdom; a man with few commitments can grow wise.	24 La requie del defunto renda per te tranquilla la memoria di lui, e tu il consola, mentre si parte da lui il suo spirito.
25 How can the ploughman become wise, whose sole ambition is to wield the goad, driving his oxen,engrossed in their work, his conversation limited to bul ocks,	25 La sapienza si acquista dallo scriba nel tempo di libertà dagli affari, e chi ha poco da agire, acquisterà la sapienza. Di qual sapienza si empierà
26 his thoughts absorbed in the furrows he traces and his long evenings spent in fattening heifers?	26 Colui, che mena l'aratro, e fa sua gloria di stimolare col pungolo i bovi, ed è tutto nei loro lavori, e non di scorre d'altro, che della progenie dei tori.
27 Similarly with al workmen and craftsmen, toiling day and night; those who engrave seals, for evertrying to think of a new design, concentrating on catching a good likeness and staying up late to get the workdone.	27 Il suo cuore è rivolto a tirare i solchi, e le sue vigilie a ingrassare le vacche.
28 Similarly with the blacksmith sitting by his anvil; he considers what to do with the pig-iron, the breath ofthe fire scorches his skin, as he contends with the heat of the furnace; the noise of the hammer deafens him, hiseyes are fixed on the pattern; he concentrates on getting the job done wel and stays up late to apply thefinishing touches.	28 Cosi il legnaiuolo, e l'architetto lavorano la notte come il giorno: colui, che incide gli emblemi degli anelli, e coll'assiduo pensare ne diversifica la scultura: applica il suo cuore a imitar la pittura, e colle sue vigilie perfeziona il suo lavoro.
29 Similarly with the potter, sitting at his work, turning the wheel with his feet; constantly on the alert overhis work, each flick of the finger premeditated;	29 Cosi il fabbro sedendo presso all'incudine intento al ferro, ch'ei mette in opera, il vapore del fuoco gli asciuga le carni, ed ei combatte cogli ardori della fornace:
30 he pummels the clay with his arm, and with his feet he kneads it; he concentrates on applying theglaze right and stays up late to clean the kiln.	30 Egli ha intronate le orecchie dal suon de' martelli, e gli occhi fisi al modello dell'opra sua:
31 Al these people rely on their hands and each is skilled at his own craft.	31 Il suo cuore è inteso a finire i lavori, e colle sue vigilie gli orna, e gli perfeziona.
32 A town could not be inhabited without them, there would be no settling, no travel ing.	32 Così colui, che fa i vasi di terra assiso al suo lavoro gira co' piedi la ruota, ed è sempre in sollecitudine per quel, che ha per le mani, e conta il numero di tutte le opere sue.
33 But you wil not find them in the parliament, they do not hold high rank in the assembly. They do not siton the judicial bench, and they do not meditate on the Law.	33 Colle sue braccia impasta la creta, e si incurva colla sua forza davanti a' suoi piedi.
34 They are not remarkable for their culture or judgement, nor are they found frequenting thephilosophers. They sustain the structure of the world, and their prayer is concerned with their trade.	34 Il cuor di lui sarà inteso alla in verniciatura, e veglierà alla nettezza della fornace.
	35 Il forte di tutti costoro è nelle lor mani, e ognuno è sapiente nel suo mestiero:
	36 Senza di loro non si fabbrica una città.
	37 Eglino però non abiteranno dappresso, e non anderanno girando, e non entreranno nelle adunanze.
	38 Non saranno assisi trai giudici, e non intenderanno le leggi giudiciali, e non insegneranno le regole della vita, e della giustizia, e non si metteranno ad esporre le parabole:
	39 Ma essi ristorano le cose del mondo, e i loro voti sono per l'esercizio dell'arte loro, applicando l'anima propria a intendere la legge dell'Altissimo.
