Sirach 38

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Treat the doctor with the honour that is his due, in consideration of his services; for he too has beencreated by the Lord.	1 Da al médico, por sus servicios, los honores que merece, que también a él le creó el Señor.
2 Healing itself comes from the Most High, like a gift received from a king.	2 Pues del Altísimo viene la curación, como una dádiva que del rey se recibe.
3 The doctor's learning keeps his head high, and the great regard him with awe.	3 La ciencia del médico realza su cabeza, y ante los grandes es admirado.
4 The Lord has brought forth medicinal herbs from the ground, and no one sensible wil despise them.	4 El Señor puso en la tierra medicinas, el varón prudente no las desdeña.
5 Did not a piece of wood once sweeten the water, thus giving proof of its power?	5 ¿No fue el agua endulzada con un leño para que se conociera su virtud?
6 He has also given some people knowledge, so that they may draw credit from his mighty works.	6 El mismo dio a los hombres la ciencia para que se gloriaran en sus maravillas.
7 He uses these for healing and relieving pain; the druggist makes up a mixture from them.	7 Con ellas cura él y quita el sufrimiento, con ellas el farmacéutico hace mixturas.
8 Thus, there is no end to his activities; thanks to him, well-being exists throughout the world.	8 Así nunca se acaban sus obras, y de él viene la paz sobre la haz de la tierra.
9 My child, when you are il , do not rebel, but pray to the Lord and he wil heal you.	9 Hijo, en tu enfermedad, no seas negligente, sino ruega al Señor, que él te curará.
10 Renounce your faults, keep your hands unsoiled, and cleanse your heart from al sin.	10 Aparta las faltas, endereza tus manos, y de todo pecado purifica el corazón.
11 Offer incense and a memorial of fine flour, make as rich an offering as you can afford.	11 Ofrece incienso y memorial de flor de harina, haz pingües ofrendas según tus medios.
12 Then let the doctor take over -- the Lord created him too -- do not let him leave you, for you need him.	12 Recurre luego al médico, pues el Señor le creó también a él, que no se aparte de tu lado, pues de él has menester.
13 There are times when good health depends on doctors.	13 Hay momentos en que en su mano está la solución,
14 For they, in their turn, wil pray the Lord to grant them the grace to relieve and to heal, and so prolongyour life.	14 pues ellos también al Señor suplicarán que les ponga en buen camino hacia el alivio y hacia la curación para salvar tu vida.
15 Whoever sins in the eyes of his Maker, let such a one come under the care of the doctor!	15 El que peca delante de su Hacedor ¡caiga en manos del médico!
16 My child, shed tears over the dead, lament for the dead to show your sorrow, then bury the body withdue ceremony and do not fail to honour the grave.	16 Hijo, por un muerto lágrimas derrama, como quien sufre cruelmente, entona la lamentación; según el ceremonial entierra su cadáver y no seas negligente con su sepultura.
17 Weep bitterly, beat your breast, observe the mourning the dead deserves for a day or two, to avoidcensorious comment, and then be comforted in your sorrow;	17 Llora amargamente, date fuertes golpes de pecho, haz el duelo según su dignidad, un día o dos, para evitar murmullos; después, consuélate de la tristeza.
18 for grief can lead to death, a grief-stricken heart loses al energy.	18 Porque de la tristeza sale la muerte, la tristeza del corazón enerva las fuerzas.
19 In affliction sorrow persists, a life of grief is hard to bear.	19 En la adversidad permanece también la tristeza, una vida de miseria va contra el corazón.
20 Do not abandon your heart to grief, drive it away, bear your own end in mind.	20 No des tu corazón a la tristeza, evítala acordándote del fin.
21 Do not forget, there is no coming back; you cannot help the dead, and you will harm yourself.	21 No lo olvides: no hay retorno, a él no le aprovechará, y te harás daño a ti mismo.
22 'Remember my doom, since it will be yours too; I yesterday, you today!'	22 «Recuerda mi sentencia, que será también la tuya: a mí ayer, a ti te toca hoy».
23 Once the dead are laid to rest, let their memory rest, do not fret for them, once their spirit departs.	23 Cuando un muerto reposa, deja en paz su memoria, consuélate de él, porque su espíritu ha partido.
24 Leisure gives the scribe the chance to acquire wisdom; a man with few commitments can grow wise.	24 La sabiduría del escriba se adquiere en los ratos de sosiego, el que se libera de negocios se hará sabio.
25 How can the ploughman become wise, whose sole ambition is to wield the goad, driving his oxen,engrossed in their work, his conversation limited to bul ocks,	25 ¿Cómo va a hacerse sabio el que empuña el arado, y se gloría de tener por lanza el aguijón, el que conduce bueyes, los arrea en sus trabajos y no sabe hablar más que de novillos?
26 his thoughts absorbed in the furrows he traces and his long evenings spent in fattening heifers?	26 Aplica su corazón a abrir surcos, y sus vigilias a cebar terneras.
27 Similarly with al workmen and craftsmen, toiling day and night; those who engrave seals, for evertrying to think of a new design, concentrating on catching a good likeness and staying up late to get the workdone.	27 De igual modo todo obrero o artesano, que trabaja día y noche; los que graban las efigies de los sellos, y su afán se centra en variar los detalles; ponen todo su corazón en igualar el modelo y gastan sus vigilias en rematar la obra.
28 Similarly with the blacksmith sitting by his anvil; he considers what to do with the pig-iron, the breath ofthe fire scorches his skin, as he contends with the heat of the furnace; the noise of the hammer deafens him, hiseyes are fixed on the pattern; he concentrates on getting the job done wel and stays up late to apply thefinishing touches.	28 También el herrero sentado junto al yunque, atento a los trabajos del hierro; el vaho del fuego sus carnes derrite, en el calor de la fragua se debate, el ruido del martillo le ensordece, y en el modelo del objeto tiene fijos sus ojos; pone su corazón en concluir sus obras, y sus vigilias en adornarlas al detalle.
29 Similarly with the potter, sitting at his work, turning the wheel with his feet; constantly on the alert overhis work, each flick of the finger premeditated;	29 De igual modo el alfarero sentado a su tarea y dando a la rueda con sus pies, preocupado sin cesar por su trabajo, toda su actividad concentrada en el número;
30 he pummels the clay with his arm, and with his feet he kneads it; he concentrates on applying theglaze right and stays up late to clean the kiln.	30 con su brazo moldea la arcilla, con sus pies vence su resistencia; pone su corazón en acabar el barnizado, y gasta sus vigilias en limpiar el horno.
31 Al these people rely on their hands and each is skilled at his own craft.	31 Todos éstos ponen su confianza en sus manos, y cada uno se muestra sabio en su tarea.
32 A town could not be inhabited without them, there would be no settling, no travel ing.	32 Sin ellos no se construiría ciudad alguna, ni se podría habitar ni circular por ella.
33 But you wil not find them in the parliament, they do not hold high rank in the assembly. They do not siton the judicial bench, and they do not meditate on the Law.	33 Mas para el consejo del pueblo no se les busca, ni se les distingue en la asamblea. No se sientan en sitial de juez, ni meditan en la alianza del juicio.
34 They are not remarkable for their culture or judgement, nor are they found frequenting thephilosophers. They sustain the structure of the world, and their prayer is concerned with their trade.	34 No demuestran instrucción ni juicio, ni se les encuentra entre los que dicen máximas. Pero aseguran la creación eterna, el objeto de su oración son los trabajos de su oficio.
