1 Almost immediately afterwards, Lysias, the king's tutor and cousin, chief minister of the realm, muchdisturbed at the turn of events,	1 Ma poco dopo Lisia, procuratore e parente del re e messo a capo degli affari del regno, non potendo sopportare le cose accadute,
2 mustered about eighty thousand foot soldiers and his entire cavalry and advanced against the Jews,intending to make the city a place for Greeks to live in,	2 messi insieme ottanta mila uomini e tutta la cavalleria, si mosse contro i Giudei, contando di prender la città e darla ad abitare ai Gentili,
3 to levy a tax on the Temple as on other national shrines, and to put the office of high priest up for saleevery year;	3 di rendere cespite di guadagno il tempio, come tutti gli altri templi dei Gentili, e di mettere in vendita tutti gli anni il sacerdozio.
4 he took no account at al of the power of God, being sublimely confident in his tens of thousands ofinfantrymen, his thousands of cavalry, and his eighty elephants.	4 Per nulla pensando alla potenza di Dio, senz'alcun freno di ragione, metteva la sua fiducia nella moltitudine dei fanti, nelle migliaia dei cavalieri, e in ottanta elefanti.
5 Invading Judaea, he approached Beth-Zur, a fortified position about twenty miles from Jerusalem, andbegan to subject it to strong pressure.	5 Or, entrato in Giudea e avvicinatosi a Betsura, che era in luoghi stretti, lontana cinque stadi da Gerusalemme, espugnò quella fortezza.
6 When Maccabaeus and his men learned that Lysias was besieging the fortresses, they and thepopulace with them begged the Lord with lamentation and tears to send a good angel to save Israel.	6 Appena Maccabeo e quelli che eran con lui seppero l'espugnazione delle fortezze, con sospiri e lacrime, insieme a tutto il popolo, pregarono il Signore a mandare l'angelo buono per la liberazione d'Israele.
7 Maccabaeus himself was the first to take up his weapons, and he urged the rest to risk their lives withhim in support of their brothers; so they sal ied out resolutely, as one man.	7 E lo stesso Maccabeo, dopo aver preso per il primo le armi, esortò tutti gli altri ad esporsi con lui al pericolo per dar soccorso ai loro fratelli.
8 They were stil near Jerusalem when a rider attired in white appeared at their head, brandishinggolden weapons.	8 Mentre tutti insieme con animo risoluto marciavano a Gerusalemme, apparve dinanzi a loro un cavaliere vestito di bianco, con armi d'oro e colla lancia in resta.
9 With one accord they al blessed the God of mercy, and found themselves filled with such couragethat they were ready to lay low not men only but the fiercest beasts and wal s of iron.	9 Allora tutti insieme benedissero il misericordioso Signore, e, fortificati nell'animo, divennero pronti ad assalire non solo gli uomini, ma anche le bestie più feroci, e a trapassare muraglie di ferro.
10 They advanced in battle order with the aid of their celestial al y, the Lord having had mercy on them.	10 Si avanzarono dunque risolutamente, avendo il Signore che li aiutava dal cielo ed aveva pietà di loro.
11 Charging like lions on the enemy, they laid low eleven thousand of the infantry and sixteen hundredhorsemen, and routed al the rest.	11 Si scagliarono impetuosamente come leoni sopra il nemico e trucidarono undici mila fanti e mille seicento cavalieri.
12 Of those, the majority got away, wounded and weaponless. Lysias himself escaped only byignominious flight.	12 Tutti gli altri fnron da loro messi in fuga, e molti scapparono feriti e ignudi, e lo stesso Lisia si mise in salvo con vergognosa fuga.
13 Now Lysias was not lacking in intel igence and, as he reflected on the reverse he had just suffered,he realised that the Hebrews were invincible because the mighty God fought for them. He therefore sent them adelegation	13 E siccome non era un insensato, considerando i vuoti fatti nelle sue truppe, e conoscendo che i Giudei erano invincibili, perchè appoggiati al soccorso dell'onnipotente, mandò a trattare con essi;
14 to persuade them to accept reasonable terms al round, and promised to compel the king to becometheir friend.	14 e promise di accondiscendere in tutto ciò che fosse giusto; e di fare in modo che il re diventasse loro amico,
15 Maccabaeus, thinking only of the common good, agreed to all that Lysias proposed, and whateverMaccabaeus submitted to Lysias in writing concerning the Jews was granted by the king.	15 Maccabeo si arrese alle preghiere di Lisia, badando in tutto a ciò che era utile, e tutto ciò che Maccabeo per iscritto chiese a Lisia in favore dei Giudei il re lo concesse. 16 Here is the text of the letter Lysias wrote to the Jews: 'Lysias to the Jewish people, greetings.	16 La lettera che Lisia scrisse ai Giudei conteneva queste cose: « Lisia al popolo dei Giudei, sa­lute.
17 'John and Absalom, your envoys, have delivered to me the communication transcribed below,requesting me to approve its provisions.	17 Giovanni e Abesalom, vostri inviati, consegnando il (vostro) scritto, mi chiesero di adem­pire quanto eran venuti a signi­ficarmi.
18 Anything requiring the king's attention I have put before him; whatever was possible, I have granted.	18 Così tutto quello che ho potuto riferire al re l'ho riferito, e tutto ciò che permettevano le circostanze l'ha concesso.
19 Provided you maintain your goodwil towards the interests of the State, I shal do my best in thefuture to promote your well-being.	19 Se dunque resterete fedeli agli affari (del regno) io anche nell'avvenire mi sforzerò di farvi del bene.
20 As regards the details, I have given orders for your envoys and my own officials to discuss thesewith you.	20 In quanto alle altre cose, in particolare, ho dati ordini a voce a questi e a quelli da me inviati di parlarne a voce con voi.
21 May you prosper. 'The twenty-fourth day of Dioscorus, in the year one hundred and forty-eight.'	21 State sani. L'anno centoquarant'otto, il ventiquattro del mese di Dioscuro ».
22 The king's letter ran as follows: 'King Antiochus to his brother Lysias, greetings.	22 La lettera del re conteneva queste cose: « Il re Antioco al fratello Lisia. Salute.
23 'Now that our father has taken his place among the gods, our wil is that the subjects of the realm beleft undisturbed to attend to their own affairs.	23 Dopo che il padre nostro fu trasferito fra gli dei, noi, bramando che i nostri sudditi, senza agitazioni attendano con cura ai loro affari,
24 We understand that the Jews do not approve our father's policy, the adoption of Greek customs, butprefer their own way of life and ask to be allowed to observe their own laws.	24 e avendo saputo che i Giudei non si piegarono al desiderio di mio padre, di passare ai riti dei Greci, e che vogliono ritenere le loro istituzioni, e che perciò da noi chiedono che sia loro concesso (di vivere secondo le) loro leggi, noi,
25 Accordingly, since we intend this people to be free from vexation like any other, our ruling is that theTemple be restored to them and that they conduct their affairs according to the customs of their ancestors.	25 volendo che anche questa nazione sia tranquilla, abbiamo giudicato e stabilito che sia loro restituito il tempio, affinchè essi possano fare secondo la consuetudine dei loro maggiori.
26 'It wil therefore be your concern to send them a mission of friendship, so that on learning our policythey may have confidence and happily go about their business.'	26 farai dunque bene a inviare ad essi e a dar la destra, affinchè, cono­sciuta la nostra volontà, stiano di buon animo, e provvedano al loro bene ».
27 The king's letter to the Jewish nation was in these terms: 'King Antiochus to the Jewish Senate andthe rest of the Jews, greetings.	27 La lettera del re ai Giudei era questa: « Il re Antioco al senato dei Giudei e a tutti gli altri Giudei. Salute.
28 'If you are well, that is as we would wish; we ourselves are in good health.	28 Se voi state bene, state come desideriamo: anche noi stiamo bene.
29 'Menelaus informs us that you wish to return home and attend to your own affairs.	29 E' venuto da noi Menelao a dire che voi volete discendere ai vostri che sono presso di noi.
30 Accordingly, al those who return before the thirtieth day of Xanthicus may rest assured that theyhave nothing to fear.	30 Or dunque a quelli che faranno il viaggio fino al trenta del mese di Xantico, diamo la destra (in segno) di sicurezza.
31 The Jews may make use of their own kind of food and their own laws as formerly, and none of themis to be molested in any way for any unwitting offences.	31 E sia permesso ai Giudei di usare i loro cibi e le loro leggi come prima, e nessuno di essi sia in alcun modo molestato per ciò che è avvenuto per ignoranza.
32 I am in fact sending Menelaus to set your minds at rest.	32 Abbiamo poi mandato anche Menelao, affinchè parli con voi.

34 The Romans also sent the Jews a letter, which read as follows: 'Quintus Memmius, Titus Manilius,Manius Sergius, legates of the Romans, to the people of the Jews, greetings.	34 Anche i Romani scrissero una lettera che diceva così: « Quinto Memmio e Tito Manilio, legati dei Romani, al popolo dei Giudei. Salute.
35 'Whatever Lysias, the king's Cousin, has granted you we also approve.	35 Le cose a voi concedute da Lisia, parente del re, noi pure le concediamo.
36 As for the matters he decided to refer to the king, consider them careful y and send someone withoutdelay, if we are to interpret them to your advantage, because we are leaving for Antioch.	36 Quanto poi a quelle che egli ha creduto di dover riferire al re, spedite subito qualcuno, dopo avere ben discussa tra voi la cosa, affinchè noi vediamo bene ciò che a voi convenga, perchè noi andiamo ad Antiochia.
37 Lose no time, therefore, in sending us those who can tel us what your intentions are.	37 Affrettatevi, dunque a rispondere per far sapere anche a noi quello che volete.
