1 Maccabees 12

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 When Jonathan saw that circumstances were working in his favour, he sent a select mission to Rometo confirm and renew his treaty of friendship with the Romans.	1 Jonathan, voyant que les circonstances lui étaient favorables, choisit des hommes qu'ilenvoya à Rome pour confirmer et renouveler l'amitié avec les Romains.
2 He also sent letters to the same effect to the Spartans and to other places.	2 Aux Spartiates et en d'autres lieux il envoya des lettres dans le même sens.
3 The envoys made their way to Rome, entered the Senate and said, 'Jonathan the high priest and theJewish nation have sent us to renew your treaty of friendship and al iance with them as before.'	3 Ils se rendirent donc à Rome, entrèrent au Sénat et dirent: "Jonathan le grand prêtre et lanation des Juifs nous ont envoyés renouveler l'amitié et l'alliance avec eux telles qu'elles étaient auparavant."
4 The Senate gave them letters to the authorities of each place, to procure their safe conduct toJudaea.	4 Le Sénat leur donna des lettres pour les autorités de chaque pays, recommandant de lesacheminer en paix jusqu'au pays de Juda.
5 The fol owing is the copy of the letter Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:	5 Voici la copie de la lettre que Jonathan écrivit aux Spartiates:
6 'Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests and the rest of the Jewish people to theSpartans their brothers, greetings.	6 "Jonathan, grand prêtre, le sénat de la nation, les prêtres et le reste du peuple des Juifs auxSpartiates leurs frères, salut!
7 'In the past, a letter was sent to Onias, the high priest, from Areios, one of your kings, stating that youare indeed our brothers, as the copy subjoined attests.	7 Déjà au temps passé, une lettre fut envoyée au grand prêtre Onias de la part d'Areios quirégnait parmi vous, attestant que vous êtes nos frères, comme le montre la copie ci-dessous.
8 Onias received the envoy with honour, and accepted the letter, in which a clear declaration was made of friendship and al iance.	8 Onias reçut avec honneur l'homme qui était envoyé et prit la lettre, qui traitait clairementd'alliance et d'amitié.
9 For our part, though we have no need of these, having the consolation of the holy books in ourpossession,	9 Pour nous, quoique nous n'en ayons pas besoin, ayant pour consolation les saints livres quisont en nos mains,
10 we venture to send to renew our fraternal friendship with you, so that we may not become strangersto you, a long time having elapsed since you last wrote to us.	10 nous avons essayé d'envoyer renouveler la fraternité et l'amitié qui nous lient à vous afinque nous ne devenions pas des étrangers pour vous, car bien des années se sont écoulées depuis que vous nousavez envoyé une missive.
11 We, for our part, on every occasion, at our festivals and on other appointed days, unfailinglyremember you in the sacrifices we offer and in our prayers, as it is right and fitting to remember brothers.	11 Quant à nous, nous ne cessons pas, en toute occasion, de faire mémoire de vous aux fêteset aux autres jours fériés, dans les sacrifices que nous offrons et dans nos prières, comme il est juste etconvenable de se souvenir de ses frères.
12 We rejoice in your renown.	12 Nous nous réjouissons de votre gloire.
13 'We ourselves, however, have had many trials and many wars, the neighbouring kings making waron us.	13 Mais pour nous, tribulations et guerres se sont multipliées et les rois nos voisins nous ontcombattus.
14 We were unwil ing to trouble you or our other al ies and friends during these wars,	14 Nous n'avons pas voulu vous être à charge à propos de ces guerres, ni à nos autres alliés etamis,
15 since we have the support of Heaven to help us, thanks to which we have been delivered from ourenemies, and they are the ones who have been brought low.	15 car du Ciel nous vient un secours qui nous sauve. Aussi avons-nous été arrachés à nosennemis, et ceux-ci ont été humiliés.
16 We have therefore chosen Numenius son of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, and sent themto the Romans to renew our former treaty of friendship and alliance,	16 Nous avons donc choisi Nouménios, fils d'Antiochos, et Antipater, fils de Jason, et nous lesavons envoyés aux Romains pour renouveler l'amitié et l'alliance qui nous unissaient à eux auparavant.
17 and we have ordered them also to visit you, to greet you and deliver you this letter of oursconcerning the renewal of our brotherhood;	17 Nous leur avons mandé d'aller aussi chez vous, de vous saluer et de vous remettre notrelettre concernant le renouvellement de notre fraternité.
18 we shal be grateful for an answer to it.'	18 Et maintenant vous ferez bien de nous répondre à ce sujet."
19 The following is the copy of the letter sent to Onias:	19 Voici la copie de la lettre qu'on avait envoyée à Onias:
20 'Areios king of the Spartans, to Onias the high priest, greetings.	20 "Areios, roi des Spartiates, à Onias, grand prêtre, salut.
21 'It has been discovered in records regarding the Spartans and Jews that they are brothers, and ofthe race of Abraham.	21 Il a été trouvé dans un récit au sujet des Spartiates et des Juifs qu'ils sont frères et qu'ilssont de la race d'Abraham.
22 Now that this has come to our knowledge, we shall be obliged if you wil send us news of yourwelfare.	22 Maintenant que nous savons cela, vous ferez bien de nous écrire au sujet de votreprospérité.
23 Our own message to you is this: your flocks and your possessions are ours, and ours are yours, andwe are instructing our envoys to give you a message to this effect.'	23 Quant à nous, nous vous écrivons: Vos troupeaux et vos biens sont à nous et les nôtres sontà vous. En conséquence nous ordonnons qu'on vous apporte un message en ce sens."
24 Jonathan learned that Demetrius' generals had returned with a larger army than before to make waron him.	24 Jonathan apprit que les généraux de Démétrius étaient revenus avec une armée plusnombreuse qu'auparavant pour lui faire la guerre.
25 He therefore left Jerusalem and went to engage them in the area of Hamath, not giving them thetime to invade his own territory.	25 Il partit de Jérusalem et se porta à leur rencontre dans le pays de Hamath, car il ne leurdonna pas le loisir d'entrer dans son territoire.
26 He sent spies into their camp, who told him on their return that the enemy were taking up positionsfor a night attack on the Jews.	26 Il envoya des espions dans leur camp; ceux-ci revinrent et lui annoncèrent qu'ils étaientdisposés à tomber, la nuit, sur les Juifs.
27 At sunset, Jonathan ordered his men to keep watch with their weapons at hand, in readiness to fightat any time during the night, and posted advance guards al round the camp.	27 Au coucher du soleil, Jonathan ordonna aux siens de veiller et d'avoir les armes sous lamain pour être prêts au combat toute la nuit, et disposa des avant-postes tout autour du camp.
28 On learning that Jonathan and his men were ready to fight, the enemy took fright and, with quakinghearts, lit fires in their bivouac and decamped.	28 A la nouvelle que Jonathan et les siens étaient prêts au combat, les ennemis eurent peur et,le coeur pénétré d'épouvante, allumèrent des feux dans leur camp et s'esquivèrent.
29 Jonathan and his men, watching the glow of the fires, were unaware of their withdrawal untilmorning,	29 Mais Jonathan et sa troupe ne s'aperçurent de leur départ qu'au matin, car ils voyaientbriller les feux.
30 and although Jonathan pursued them, he failed to overtake them, for they had already crossed theriver Eleutherus.	30 Jonathan se mit à leur poursuite mais ne les atteignit pas, parce qu'ils avaient franchi lefleuve Eleuthère.
31 So Jonathan wheeled round on the Arabs cal ed Zabadaeans, beat them and plundered them;	31 Jonathan se tourna contre les Arabes appelés Zabadéens, les battit et s'empara de leursdépouilles,
32 then, breaking camp, he went to Damascus, thus crossing the whole province.	32 puis, ayant levé le camp, il vint à Damas et parcourut toute la province.
33 Simon, meanwhile, had also set out and had penetrated as far as Ascalon and the neighbouringtowns. He then turned on Joppa and moved quickly to occupy it,	33 Quant à Simon, il était parti et avait marché jusqu'à Ascalon et aux places voisines. Il sedétourna sur Joppé et l'occupa.
34 for he had heard of their intention to hand over this strong point to the supporters of Demetrius; hestationed a garrison there to hold it.	34 Il avait appris en effet que les habitants voulaient livrer cette place forte aux partisans deDémétrius; il y plaça une garnison pour la garder.
35 Jonathan, on his return, cal ed a meeting of the elders of the people and decided with them to buildfortresses in Judaea	35 Une fois revenu, Jonathan réunit l'assemblée des anciens du peuple et décida avec euxd'édifier des forteresses en Judée,
36 and to heighten the walls of Jerusalem and erect a high barrier between the Citadel and the city, tocut the former off from the city and isolate it, to prevent the occupants from buying or sel ing.	36 de surélever les murs de Jérusalem, de dresser une haute barrière entre la Citadelle et laville pour séparer celle-là de la ville et pour qu'elle fût isolée, afin que ses gens ne pussent ni acheter ni vendre.
37 Rebuilding the city was a co-operative effort: part of the wall over the eastern ravine had fal en down;he restored the quarter called Chaphenatha.	37 Ils se réunirent pour rebâtir la ville: il était tombé une partie du mur du torrent qui est aulevant; il remit à neuf le quartier appelé Chaphénatha.
38 Simon, meanwhile, rebuilt Adida in the lowlands, fortifying it, and erecting gates with bolts.	38 Quant à Simon, il rebâtit Adida dans le Bas-Pays, la fortifia et y déposa des portes muniesde verrous.
39 Trypho's ambition was to become king of Asia, assume the crown, and overpower King Antiochus.	39 Tryphon songeait à régner sur l'Asie, à ceindre le diadème et à mettre la main sur le roiAntiochus.
40 He was apprehensive that Jonathan might not al ow him to do this, and might even make war onhim, so he set out and came to Beth-Shean, in the hopes of finding some pretext for having him arrested and putto death.	40 Redoutant que Jonathan ne le laissât pas faire et qu'il ne lui fît au besoin la guerre, ilcherchait un biais pour l'appréhender et le faire périr; s'étant mis en mouvement, il vint à Bethsân.
41 Jonathan went out to intercept him, with forty thousand picked men in battle order, and arrived atBeth-Shean.	41 Jonathan sortit à sa rencontre avec 40.000 hommes choisis pour la bataille rangée, et vint àBethsân.
42 When Trypho saw him there with a large force, he hesitated to make any move against him.	42 Tryphon, voyant qu'il était venu avec une armée nombreuse, se garda de mettre la main surlui.
43 He even received him with honour, commended him to al his friends, gave him presents andordered his friends and his troops to obey him as they would himself.	43 Il le reçut même avec honneur, le recommanda à tous ses amis, lui fit des cadeaux etordonna à ses amis et à ses troupes de lui obéir comme à lui-même.
44 He said to Jonathan, 'Why have you given all these people so much trouble, when there is no threatof war between us?	44 Il dit à Jonathan: "Pourquoi as-tu fatigué tout ce peuple alors qu'il n'y a pas entre nousmenace de guerre?
45 Send them back home; pick yourself a few men as your bodyguard, and come with me to Ptolemais,which I am going to hand over to you, with the other fortresses and the remaining troops and al the officials;after which, I shal take the road for home. This was my purpose in coming here.'	45 Renvoie-les donc chez eux, choisis-toi quelques hommes pour t'accompagner et viens avecmoi à Ptolémaïs. Je te livrerai cette ville ainsi que les autres forteresses, le reste des troupes et tous lesfonctionnaires, puis, prenant le chemin du retour, je m'en irai, car c'est dans ce but que je suis venu ici."
46 Jonathan trusted him and did as he said; he dismissed his forces, who went back to Judaea.	46 Lui faisant confiance, Jonathan agit suivant ses dires: il renvoya ses troupes, quiregagnèrent le pays de Juda.
47 With him he retained three thousand men, of whom he left two thousand in Galilee, while a thousandaccompanied him.	47 Il garda avec lui 3.000 hommes dont il détacha 2.000 en Galilée, et mille allèrent avec lui.
48 But as soon as Jonathan had entered Ptolemais, the people of Ptolemais closed the gates, seizedhim, and put al those who had entered with him to the sword.	48 Lorsque Jonathan fut entré à Ptolémaïs, les Ptolémaïtes fermèrent les portes, se saisirent desa personne et passèrent tous ceux qui étaient entrés avec lui au fil de l'épée.
49 Trypho sent troops and cavalry into Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's supporters.	49 Tryphon envoya des troupes et de la cavalerie en Galilée et dans la Grande Plaine pourexterminer tous les partisans de Jonathan.
50 These, concluding that he had been taken and had perished with his companions, encouraged oneanother, marching with closed ranks and ready to give battle,	50 Ceux-ci comprirent qu'il avait été pris et qu'il était perdu comme ceux qui se trouvaientavec lui; ils s'encouragèrent les uns les autres et marchèrent en rangs serrés, prêts au combat.
51 and when their pursuers saw that they would fight for their lives, they turned back.	51 Ceux qui les poursuivaient, voyant qu'ils luttaient pour leur vie, s'en retournèrent.
52 Al reached Judaea safe and sound, and there they lamented Jonathan and his companions, beingvery frightened indeed; al Israel was plunged into mourning.	52 Ils arrivèrent tous sains et saufs au pays de Juda, pleurèrent Jonathan et ses compagnons etfurent en proie à une grande frayeur; tout Israël mena un grand deuil.
53 The surrounding nations were al now looking for ways of destroying them: 'They have no leader,'they said, 'no ally; we have only to attack them now, and we shall blot out their very memory from all peoples.'	53 Toutes les nations d'alentour cherchèrent à les exterminer: "Ils n'ont pas de chef, disaient-ils, ni d'aide, il est temps de les attraper et nous effacerons leur souvenir du milieu des hommes."
