1 When Jonathan saw that circumstances were working in his favour, he sent a select mission to Rometo confirm and renew his treaty of friendship with the Romans.	1 Quand il vit que les choses tournaient à son avantage, Jonathan choisit des hommes qu’il envoya à Rome pour confirmer et renouveler l’amitié avec les Romains.
2 He also sent letters to the same effect to the Spartans and to other places.	2 Il envoya des lettres semblables à Sparte et dans d’autres villes.
3 The envoys made their way to Rome, entered the Senate and said, 'Jonathan the high priest and theJewish nation have sent us to renew your treaty of friendship and al iance with them as before.'	3 Ses envoyés se rendirent donc à Rome, ils entrèrent au Sénat et dirent: “Jonathan, le grand prêtre, et la nation des Juifs, nous ont envoyés pour renouveler l’amitié et l’alliance que vous avez établies avec eux précédemment.”
4 The Senate gave them letters to the authorities of each place, to procure their safe conduct toJudaea.	4 Le Sénat leur donna des lettres de recommandation pour que, dans chaque pays, on les achemine en paix jusqu’au pays de Juda.
5 The fol owing is the copy of the letter Jonathan wrote to the Spartans:	5 Et voici la copie de la lettre que Jonathan écrivit aux gens de Sparte:
6 'Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests and the rest of the Jewish people to theSpartans their brothers, greetings.	6 “Jonathan, le grand prêtre, le Sénat de la nation, les prêtres et le reste du peuple juif saluent les habitants de Sparte, leurs frères.
7 'In the past, a letter was sent to Onias, the high priest, from Areios, one of your kings, stating that youare indeed our brothers, as the copy subjoined attests.	7 Déjà dans les temps passés une lettre a été envoyée au grand prêtre Onias de la part de votre roi Aréios; elle affirmait que vous êtes bien nos frères comme le montre la copie qui suit.
8 Onias received the envoy with honour, and accepted the letter, in which a clear declaration was made of friendship and al iance.	8 Onias accueillit avec honneur l’homme qui lui était envoyé, il reçut la lettre où il était clairement parlé d’alliance et d’amitié.
9 For our part, though we have no need of these, having the consolation of the holy books in ourpossession,	9 Nous ne voulons pas aujourd’hui vous supplier à ce sujet, car les livres saints qui sont entre nos mains sont notre réconfort.
10 we venture to send to renew our fraternal friendship with you, so that we may not become strangersto you, a long time having elapsed since you last wrote to us.	10 Mais nous ne voudrions pas devenir des étrangers pour vous, et nous avons voulu réaffirmer notre fraternité et notre amitié, car bien des années se sont écoulées depuis que nous vous avons envoyé une lettre.
11 We, for our part, on every occasion, at our festivals and on other appointed days, unfailinglyremember you in the sacrifices we offer and in our prayers, as it is right and fitting to remember brothers.	11 Nous ne cessons de penser à vous en tous temps, dans nos fêtes et nos autres jours saints, dans les sacrifices que nous offrons et dans nos prières, comme il est juste et convenable de le faire pour des frères.
12 We rejoice in your renown.	12 Nous sommes heureux de votre réussite!
13 'We ourselves, however, have had many trials and many wars, the neighbouring kings making waron us.	13 Pour nous, ce sont les épreuves et les guerres continuelles qui nous ont accablés, car les rois qui nous entourent nous ont combattus.
14 We were unwil ing to trouble you or our other al ies and friends during these wars,	14 À l’occasion de ces guerres, nous n’avons voulu être à charge ni à vous, ni à nos autres alliés et amis,
15 since we have the support of Heaven to help us, thanks to which we have been delivered from ourenemies, and they are the ones who have been brought low.	15 et de fait le secours du Ciel nous est venu en aide, nous avons été délivrés et nos ennemis ont été humiliés.
16 We have therefore chosen Numenius son of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, and sent themto the Romans to renew our former treaty of friendship and alliance,	16 C’est pourquoi nous avons choisi Nouménios fils d’Antiocos, et Antipater fils de Jason, les mêmes que nous avons envoyés aux Romains pour renouveler avec eux l’amitié et l’alliance d’autrefois.
17 and we have ordered them also to visit you, to greet you and deliver you this letter of oursconcerning the renewal of our brotherhood;	17 Nous leur avons demandé d’aller aussi chez vous pour vous saluer et vous apporter cette lettre pour réaffirmer notre fraternité.
18 we shal be grateful for an answer to it.'	18 Maintenant, ayez la bonté de nous répondre à ce sujet.”
19 The following is the copy of the letter sent to Onias:	19 Voici maintenant la copie de la lettre qui avait été envoyée à Onias:
20 'Areios king of the Spartans, to Onias the high priest, greetings.	20 “Aréios, roi des Spartiates, salue Onias le grand prêtre!
21 'It has been discovered in records regarding the Spartans and Jews that they are brothers, and ofthe race of Abraham.	21 On a découvert dans un écrit que les Spartiates et les Juifs sont frères: ils sont de la race d’Abraham.
22 Now that this has come to our knowledge, we shall be obliged if you wil send us news of yourwelfare.	22 Maintenant que nous savons cela, vous ferez bien de nous écrire pour nous dire si tout va bien pour vous.
23 Our own message to you is this: your flocks and your possessions are ours, and ours are yours, andwe are instructing our envoys to give you a message to this effect.'	23 De notre côté nous vous écrivons ceci: vos troupeaux et vos biens sont à nous et les nôtres sont à vous. Nous avons donc donné des ordres pour vous le faire savoir.”
24 Jonathan learned that Demetrius' generals had returned with a larger army than before to make waron him.	24 Jonathan apprit que les généraux de Démétrius étaient revenus l’attaquer avec une armée plus forte encore qu’auparavant.
25 He therefore left Jerusalem and went to engage them in the area of Hamath, not giving them thetime to invade his own territory.	25 Il partit donc de Jérusalem et marcha à leur rencontre jusqu’au pays de Hamat: ainsi il ne leur donnait pas le temps d’envahir son territoire.
26 He sent spies into their camp, who told him on their return that the enemy were taking up positionsfor a night attack on the Jews.	26 Il envoya des espions dans leur camp et à leur retour ils l’informèrent que les Syriens faisaient des préparatifs pour le surprendre pendant la nuit.
27 At sunset, Jonathan ordered his men to keep watch with their weapons at hand, in readiness to fightat any time during the night, and posted advance guards al round the camp.	27 Aussi, lorsque le soleil fut couché, Jonathan ordonna à ses hommes de veiller et de se tenir en armes toute la nuit, prêts au combat, et il mit en place des postes avancés tout autour du camp.
28 On learning that Jonathan and his men were ready to fight, the enemy took fright and, with quakinghearts, lit fires in their bivouac and decamped.	28 Quand les ennemis apprirent que Jonathan et les siens étaient prêts à combattre, ils furent pris de peur et remplis d’épouvante; ils allumèrent des feux dans leur camp et prirent la fuite.
29 Jonathan and his men, watching the glow of the fires, were unaware of their withdrawal untilmorning,	29 Comme ils voyaient des feux allumés, Jonathan et ses hommes ne s’aperçurent qu’au matin de leur départ.
30 and although Jonathan pursued them, he failed to overtake them, for they had already crossed theriver Eleutherus.	30 Jonathan les poursuivit mais sans réussir à les rejoindre, car ils avaient traversé le fleuve Éleutère.
31 So Jonathan wheeled round on the Arabs cal ed Zabadaeans, beat them and plundered them;	31 Jonathan se retourna alors contre les Arabes appelés Zabadéens, il les battit et s’empara de leurs biens,
32 then, breaking camp, he went to Damascus, thus crossing the whole province.	32 puis il leva le camp, arriva à Damas et parcourut toute la province.
33 Simon, meanwhile, had also set out and had penetrated as far as Ascalon and the neighbouringtowns. He then turned on Joppa and moved quickly to occupy it,	33 De son côté Simon s’était mis en route et s’était avancé jusqu’à Ascalon et aux forteresses voisines; ensuite il se retourna vers Joppé et l’occupa.
34 for he had heard of their intention to hand over this strong point to the supporters of Demetrius; hestationed a garrison there to hold it.	34 Il avait appris en effet que les habitants de cette forteresse avaient l’intention de la livrer à Démétrius; il y mit une garnison pour garder la ville.
35 Jonathan, on his return, cal ed a meeting of the elders of the people and decided with them to buildfortresses in Judaea	35 De retour à Jérusalem, Jonathan convoqua les anciens du peuple et décida avec eux de construire des forteresses en Judée,
36 and to heighten the walls of Jerusalem and erect a high barrier between the Citadel and the city, tocut the former off from the city and isolate it, to prevent the occupants from buying or sel ing.	36 de rehausser les murs de Jérusalem et de bâtir un rempart élevé entre la Citadelle et la ville pour l’isoler de la ville et pour que ses occupants ainsi isolés, ne puissent plus ni acheter ni vendre.
37 Rebuilding the city was a co-operative effort: part of the wall over the eastern ravine had fal en down;he restored the quarter called Chaphenatha.	37 Ils se réunirent pour reconstruire la ville car une partie du rempart vers le torrent qui se trouve à l’est était tombée. On remit à neuf le quartier appelé Chafénata.
38 Simon, meanwhile, rebuilt Adida in the lowlands, fortifying it, and erecting gates with bolts.	38 De son côté Simon reconstruisit Adida dans le Bas-Pays, il la fortifia et y plaça des portes garnies de verrous.
39 Trypho's ambition was to become king of Asia, assume the crown, and overpower King Antiochus.	39 Tryphon voulait régner sur l’Asie, se faire couronner, et mettre la main sur le roi Antiocus,
40 He was apprehensive that Jonathan might not al ow him to do this, and might even make war onhim, so he set out and came to Beth-Shean, in the hopes of finding some pretext for having him arrested and putto death.	40 mais il craignait que Jonathan ne l’en empêche et ne lui fasse la guerre. C’est pourquoi Tryphon cherchait le moyen de mettre la main sur lui et de le faire mourir; il se mit ainsi en route et arriva à Beth-Chéan.
41 Jonathan went out to intercept him, with forty thousand picked men in battle order, and arrived atBeth-Shean.	41 Jonathan sortit au-devant de lui avec 40 000 hommes choisis parmi les meilleurs et il marcha vers Beth-Chéan.
42 When Trypho saw him there with a large force, he hesitated to make any move against him.	42 Quand Tryphon vit que Jonathan arrivait avec une forte armée, il n’osa pas mettre la main sur lui.
43 He even received him with honour, commended him to al his friends, gave him presents andordered his friends and his troops to obey him as they would himself.	43 Il le reçut donc avec honneur, il le recommanda à tous ses Amis, lui offrit des cadeaux et commanda à ses Amis et à ses soldats de lui obéir comme à lui-même.
44 He said to Jonathan, 'Why have you given all these people so much trouble, when there is no threatof war between us?	44 Il dit alors à Jonathan: “Pourquoi as-tu fatigué tous ces hommes, alors qu’il n’y a entre nous aucune menace de guerre.
45 Send them back home; pick yourself a few men as your bodyguard, and come with me to Ptolemais,which I am going to hand over to you, with the other fortresses and the remaining troops and al the officials;after which, I shal take the road for home. This was my purpose in coming here.'	45 Renvoie-les donc chez eux, gardes-en seulement quelques uns pour t’accompagner et viens avec moi à Ptolémaïs. Je remettrai cette ville entre tes mains ainsi que les autres forteresses, les autres troupes et tous les serviteurs du roi, puis je repartirai à Antioche car c’est pour cela que je suis venu.”
46 Jonathan trusted him and did as he said; he dismissed his forces, who went back to Judaea.	46 Jonathan lui fit confiance et fit comme il avait dit; il renvoya ses hommes qui retournèrent en Judée,
47 With him he retained three thousand men, of whom he left two thousand in Galilee, while a thousandaccompanied him.	47 et il n’en garda près de lui que 3 000. Il en envoya 2 000 en Galilée et n’en prit que 1 000 pour l’accompagner.
48 But as soon as Jonathan had entered Ptolemais, the people of Ptolemais closed the gates, seizedhim, and put al those who had entered with him to the sword.	48 Mais Jonathan était à peine entré à Ptolémaïs que les habitants refermèrent les portes, mirent la main sur lui et tuèrent par l’épée tous ceux qui l’accompagnaient.
49 Trypho sent troops and cavalry into Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's supporters.	49 Pendant ce temps, Tryphon envoyait une armée et des cavaliers en Galilée pour massacrer dans la Grande Plaine tous les hommes de Jonathan.
50 These, concluding that he had been taken and had perished with his companions, encouraged oneanother, marching with closed ranks and ready to give battle,	50 Mais quand ceux-ci entendirent que Jonathan avait été pris et mis à mort avec tous ses compagnons, ils s’encouragèrent les uns les autres et firent la route en rangs serrés, prêts à combattre.
51 and when their pursuers saw that they would fight for their lives, they turned back.	51 En voyant qu’ils étaient décidés à défendre leur vie, ceux qui les poursuivaient firent demi-tour,
52 Al reached Judaea safe and sound, and there they lamented Jonathan and his companions, beingvery frightened indeed; al Israel was plunged into mourning.	52 et c’est ainsi qu’ils rentrèrent tous sans difficulté au pays de Juda; ils pleurèrent Jonathan et ses compagnons et furent saisis d’une grande crainte. Tout Israël fit un grand deuil.
53 The surrounding nations were al now looking for ways of destroying them: 'They have no leader,'they said, 'no ally; we have only to attack them now, and we shall blot out their very memory from all peoples.'	53 Toutes les nations d’alentour ne pensaient qu’à les éliminer; on y disait: “Ils n’ont plus ni chef ni allié, attaquons-les maintenant et effaçons leur mémoire du milieu des hommes!”
