Exodus 5

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 After this, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, 'This is what Yahweh, God of Israel,says, "Let my people go, so that they can hold a feast in my honour in the desert." '	1 Inmediatamente, Moisés y Aarón fueron a decir al Faraón: «Así habla el Señor, el Dios de Israel: Deja partir a mi pueblo, para que celebre en el desierto una fiesta en mi honor».
2 'Who is Yahweh,' Pharaoh replied, 'for me to obey what he says and let Israel go? I know nothing ofYahweh, and I wil not let Israel go.'	2 Pero el Faraón respondió: «¿Y quien es el Señor para que yo le obedezca dejando partir a Israel? Yo no conozco al Señor y no dejaré partir a Israel».
3 'The God of the Hebrews has encountered us,' they replied. 'Give us leave to make a three -days'journey into the desert and sacrifice to Yahweh our God, or he wil strike us with a plague or with the sword.'	3 Ellos dijeron: «El Dios de los hebreos vino a nuestro encuentro, y ahora tenemos que realizar una marcha de tres días por el desierto, para ofrecer sacrificios al Señor, nuestro Dios. De lo contrario él nos castigará con la peste o la espada».
4 The king of Egypt said to them, 'Moses and Aaron, what do you mean by distracting the people fromtheir work? Get back to your forced labour.'	4 El rey de Egipto les respondió: «¿Por qué ustedes, Moisés y Aarón, se empeñan en apartar al pueblo de sus tareas? Vuelvan al trabajo que les ha sido impuesto».
5 And Pharaoh said, 'Now that the people have grown to such numbers in the country, what do you meanby interrupting their forced labour?'	5 El pensaba así: «Ellos son ahora más numerosos que los nativos del país, ¿y todavía debo tolerarles que interrumpan sus trabajos?».
6 That very day, Pharaoh gave the order to the people's taskmasters and their scribes,	6 Ese mismo día, el Faraón dio a los capataces y a los inspectores del pueblo las siguientes instrucciones:
7 'Do not go on providing the people with straw for brickmaking as before; let them go and gather strawfor themselves.	7 «No sigan entregando a esa gente la paja para hacer los ladrillos, como lo hicieron hasta ahora. Que vayan a juntarla ellos mismos.
8 But you wil exact the same quantity of bricks from them as before, not reducing it at al , since they arelazy, and that is why their cry is, "Let us go and sacrifice to our God."	8 Pero exíjanles la misma cantidad de ladrillos que fabricaban antes, sin descontarles ni uno solo, porque son unos holgazanes. Por eso gritan: «¡Déjanos ir a ofrecer sacrificios a nuestro Dios!»
9 Give these people more work to do, and see they do it instead of listening to lying speeches.'	9 Háganlos trabajar más duramente y que estén siempre ocupados; así no prestarán atención a esas patrañas».
10 The people's taskmasters and scribes went out to speak to the people and said, 'Pharaoh says this, "Ishall not provide you with any more straw.	10 En seguida salieron los capataces del pueblo, junto con los inspectores, y dijeron a la multitud: «Así habla el Faraón: «De ahora en adelante no les daré más paja.
11 Go and collect straw for yourselves where you can find it. But your output is not to be any less." '	11 Vayan ustedes mismos y tráiganla de donde puedan. Pero el rendimiento no deberá disminuir en lo más mínimo».
12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble for their straw.	12 Entonces el pueblo se dispersó por todo el territorio de Egipto para recoger los rastrojos, y abastecerse así de paja.
13 The taskmasters harassed them. 'You must complete your daily quota,' they said, 'just as when thestraw was there.'	13 Los capataces, por su parte, los apremiaban diciendo: «Terminen el trabajo que se les fijó para cada día, como lo hacían cuando les daban la paja».
14 And the Israelites' foremen whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had put in charge of them, were flogged andasked, 'Why have you not fulfil ed your quota of bricks made today as before?'	14 Y los capataces del Faraón golpearon a los inspectores israelitas que ellos habían designado, diciendo: «¿Por qué ayer y hoy no completaron la cantidad establecida de ladrillos, como lo venían haciendo hasta ahora?».
15 The Israelites' foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh. 'Why do you treat your servants like this?' theysaid.	15 Los inspectores de los israelitas fueron a quejarse al Faraón, diciendo: «¿Por qué tratas así a tus servidores?
16 'No straw is provided for your servants, yet stil the cry is, "Make bricks!" And now your servants arebeing flogged!. . .'	16 No nos dan paja, no cesan de decirnos que hagamos ladrillos, y encima nos golpean. Y tú tienes la culpa».
17 'You are lazy, lazy,' he retorted. 'That is why you say, "Let us go and sacrifice to Yahweh."	17 Pero el Faraón respondió: «Ustedes son unos holgazanes, sí, unos perfectos holgazanes. Por eso andan diciendo: «Déjanos ir a ofrecer sacrificios a nuestro Dios».
18 Get back to your work at once. You wil not be provided with straw; all the same, you wil deliver thequota of bricks.'	18 Ahora vayan a trabajar. Y no sólo no les darán más paja, sino que deberán entregar la misma cantidad de ladrillos.»
19 The Israelites' foremen saw they were in a difficult position on being told, 'You wil not reduce yourdaily production of bricks.'	19 Cuando les anunciaron que no debían disminuir la producción de ladrillos establecida para cada día, los inspectores israelitas se vieron en un grave aprieto.
20 As they left Pharaoh's presence, they met Moses and Aaron who were standing in their way.	20 Y al encontrarse con Moisés y Aarón que los estaban esperando a la salida,
21 'May Yahweh look down at you and judge!' they said to them. 'You have brought us into bad odourwith Pharaoh and his officials; you have put a sword into their hand to kil us.'	21 les dijeron: «Que el Señor fije su mirada en ustedes y juzgue. Porque nos han hecho odiosos al Faraón y a sus servidores, y han puesto en sus manos una espada para que nos maten».
22 Moses went back to Yahweh and said, 'Lord, why do you treat this people so harshly? Why did yousend me?	22 Moisés se volvió al Señor, diciendo: «Señor, ¿por qué maltratas a este pueblo? ¿Para esto me has enviado?
23 Ever since I came to Pharaoh and spoke to him in your name, he has il -treated this people, and youhave done nothing at al about rescuing your people.'	23 Desde que me presenté ante el Faraón para hablarle en tu nombre, él no ha cesado de maltratar a este pueblo, y tú no haces nada para librar a tu pueblo.
