Exodus 17

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 The whole community of Israelites left the desert of Sin, travel ing by stages as Yahweh ordered. Theypitched camp at Rephidim where there was no water for the people to drink.	1 - Partita dunque tutta la moltitudine de' figli d'Israele dal deserto di Sin, secondo le tappe ordinate dal Signore, s'accamparono in Rafidim, dove non c'era acqua perché il popolo bevesse.
2 The people took issue with Moses for this and said, 'Give us water to drink.' Moses replied, 'Why takeissue with me? Why do you put Yahweh to the test?'	2 Quelli, lamentandosi con Mosè, dissero: «Dacci acqua da bere». E Mosè a loro: «Perché vi lamentate con me? Perché tentate il Signore?».
3 But tormented by thirst, the people complained to Moses. 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt,' theysaid, 'only to make us, our children and our livestock, die of thirst?'	3 Ivi dunque il popolo ebbe sete, per penuria di acqua, e mormorò contro Mosè, dicendo: «Perché ci hai fatti uscire dall' Egitto, per far morire di sete noi, i nostri figli e gli animali?».
4 Moses appealed to Yahweh for help. 'How am I to deal with this people?' he said. 'Any moment nowthey will stone me!'	4 Mosè si raccomandò al Signore, dicendo: «Che debbo fare con questo popolo? Un poco più, e mi lapiderà».
5 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go on ahead of the people, taking some of the elders of Israel with you;in your hand take the staff with which you struck the River, and go.	5 Ed il Signore a Mosè: «Precedi il popolo, prendi con te degli anziani d'Israele, porta in mano la verga con la quale percotesti il fiume, ed incamminati.
6 I shal be waiting for you there on the rock (at Horeb). Strike the rock, and water wil come out for thepeople to drink.' This was what Moses did, with the elders of Israel looking on.	6 Ecco, io starò incontro a te sulla roccia dell'Horeb; tu batterai la roccia, e ne uscirà acqua perché il popolo beva». Così fece Mosè, presenti i seniori d'Israele;
7 He gave the place the names Massah and Meribah because of the Israelites' contentiousness andbecause they put Yahweh to the test by saying, 'Is Yahweh with us, or not?'	7 e chiamò quel luogo col nome di " Tentazione ", a causa della contesa dei figli d'Israele, e perchè essi avevan tentato il Signore, dicendo: «È o no con noi il Signore?».
8 The Amalekites then came and attacked Israel at Rephidim.	8 Or vennero gli Amaleciti, ed assalirono Israele in Rafidim.
9 Moses said to Joshua, 'Pick some men and tomorrow morning go out and engage Amalek. I, for mypart, shal take my stand on the hil top with the staff of God in my hand.'	9 Mosè disse a Giosuè: «Scegliti degli uomini, ed esci, a combattere contro gli Amaleciti; domani io starò sulla cima del colle, tenendo in mano la verga di Dio».
10 Joshua did as Moses had told him and went out to engage Amalek, while Moses, Aaron and Hurwent up to the top of the hil .	10 Giosuè fece come Mosè gli aveva detto, e combattè contro gli Amaleciti. Mosè poi, Aronne ed Hur salirono in cima al colle.
11 As long as Moses kept his arms raised, Israel had the advantage; when he let his arms fall, theadvantage went to Amalek.	11 Ora, finchè Mosè teneva le mani alzate, vinceva Israele; ma se le abbassava un poco, vinceva Amalec.
12 But Moses' arms grew heavy, so they took a stone and put it under him and on this he sat, withAaron and Hur supporting his arms on each side. Thus his arms remained unwavering til sunset,	12 Le mani infatti di Mosè si stancavano. Presa perciò una pietra, gliela misero sotto, ed egli vi sedè sopra; Aronne poi ed Hur, da una parte e dall'altra, gli sorreggevan le mani; così non gli si stancaron le mani fino al tramonto del sole.
13 and Joshua defeated Amalek, putting their people to the sword.	13 E Giosuè mise in fuga Amalec e le sue schiere col filo della spada.
14 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Write this down in a book to commemorate it, and repeat it over toJoshua, for I shal blot out al memory of Amalek under heaven.'	14 Disse poi il Signore a Mosè: «Scrivi questo per memoria nel libro, e confidalo a Giosuè: che io cancellerò sulla terra la memoria di Amalec».
15 Moses then built an altar and named it Yahweh-Nissi	15 Mosè alzò un altare, lo chiamò " Il Signore è la mia esaltazione "; e disse:
16 meaning, 'Lay hold of Yahweh's banner! Yahweh wil be at war with Amalek generation aftergeneration.'	16 «La mano del Signore [si stenderà] dal suo soglio, e la sua guerra sarà contro Amalec, di generazione in generazione».
