Exodus 17

1 The whole community of Israelites left the desert of Sin, travel ing by stages as Yahweh ordered. Theypitched camp at Rephidim where there was no water for the people to drink.	1 ויסעו כל עדת בני ישראל ממדבר סין למסעיהם על פי יהוה ויחנו ברפידים ואין מים לשתת העם
2 The people took issue with Moses for this and said, 'Give us water to drink.' Moses replied, 'Why takeissue with me? Why do you put Yahweh to the test?'	2 וירב העם עם משה ויאמרו תנו לנו מים ונשתה ויאמר להם משה מה תריבון עמדי מה תנסון את יהוה
3 But tormented by thirst, the people complained to Moses. 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt,' theysaid, 'only to make us, our children and our livestock, die of thirst?'	3 ויצמא שם העם למים וילן העם על משה ויאמר למה זה העליתנו ממצרים להמית אתי ואת בני ואת מקני בצמא
4 Moses appealed to Yahweh for help. 'How am I to deal with this people?' he said. 'Any moment nowthey will stone me!'	4 ויצעק משה אל יהוה לאמר מה אעשה לעם הזה עוד מעט וסקלני
5 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go on ahead of the people, taking some of the elders of Israel with you;in your hand take the staff with which you struck the River, and go.	5 ויאמר יהוה אל משה עבר לפני העם וקח אתך מזקני ישראל ומטך אשר הכית בו את היאר קח בידך והלכת
6 I shal be waiting for you there on the rock (at Horeb). Strike the rock, and water wil come out for thepeople to drink.' This was what Moses did, with the elders of Israel looking on.	6 הנני עמד לפניך שם על הצור בחרב והכית בצור ויצאו ממנו מים ושתה העם ויעש כן משה לעיני זקני ישראל
7 He gave the place the names Massah and Meribah because of the Israelites' contentiousness andbecause they put Yahweh to the test by saying, 'Is Yahweh with us, or not?'	7 ויקרא שם המקום מסה ומריבה על ריב בני ישראל ועל נסתם את יהוה לאמר היש יהוה בקרבנו אם אין
8 The Amalekites then came and attacked Israel at Rephidim.	8 ויבא עמלק וילחם עם ישראל ברפידם
9 Moses said to Joshua, 'Pick some men and tomorrow morning go out and engage Amalek. I, for mypart, shal take my stand on the hil top with the staff of God in my hand.'	9 ויאמר משה אל יהושע בחר לנו אנשים וצא הלחם בעמלק מחר אנכי נצב על ראש הגבעה ומטה האלהים בידי
10 Joshua did as Moses had told him and went out to engage Amalek, while Moses, Aaron and Hurwent up to the top of the hil .	10 ויעש יהושע כאשר אמר לו משה להלחם בעמלק ומשה אהרן וחור עלו ראש הגבעה
11 As long as Moses kept his arms raised, Israel had the advantage; when he let his arms fall, theadvantage went to Amalek.	11 והיה כאשר ירים משה ידו וגבר ישראל וכאשר יניח ידו וגבר עמלק
12 But Moses' arms grew heavy, so they took a stone and put it under him and on this he sat, withAaron and Hur supporting his arms on each side. Thus his arms remained unwavering til sunset,	12 וידי משה כבדים ויקחו אבן וישימו תחתיו וישב עליה ואהרן וחור תמכו בידיו מזה אחד ומזה אחד ויהי ידיו אמונה עד בא השמש
13 and Joshua defeated Amalek, putting their people to the sword.	13 ויחלש יהושע את עמלק ואת עמו לפי חרב
14 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Write this down in a book to commemorate it, and repeat it over toJoshua, for I shal blot out al memory of Amalek under heaven.'	14 ויאמר יהוה אל משה כתב זאת זכרון בספר ושים באזני יהושע כי מחה אמחה את זכר עמלק מתחת השמים
15 Moses then built an altar and named it Yahweh-Nissi	15 ויבן משה מזבח ויקרא שמו יהוה נסי
16 meaning, 'Lay hold of Yahweh's banner! Yahweh wil be at war with Amalek generation aftergeneration.'	16 ויאמר כי יד על כס יה מלחמה ליהוה בעמלק מדר דר
