NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Thus Judith called on the God of Israel. When she had finished praying,	1 Quando Giuditta cessò d'invocare il Dio d'Israele, pronunciate tutte queste parole,
2 she got up from the floor, summoned her maid and went down into the rooms which she used onSabbath days and festivals.	2 si alzò da terra, chiamò la sua ancella e discese nell'appartamento in cui soleva passare i giorni dei sabati e le sue feste.
3 There she removed the sackcloth she was wearing and taking off her widow's dress, she washed alover, anointed herself plentiful y with perfumes, dressed her hair, wrapped a turban round it and put on the robeof joy she used to wear when her husband Manasseh was alive.	3 Si tolse di dosso il sacco di cui era rivestita, depose le sue vesti vedovili, lavò con acqua il proprio corpo ungendosi con uno spesso unguento e spartì i capelli del capo imponendosi un diadema. Indossò gli abiti da festa che usava quando suo marito Manasse era ancora in vita.
4 She put sandals on her feet, put on her necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings and al her jewel ery, andmade herself beautiful enough to beguile the eye of any man who saw her.	4 Si mise i sandali ai piedi, cinse i braccialetti, le collane, gli anelli, gli orecchini e ogni altro ornamento, rendendosi molto avvenente, tanto da sedurre gli sguardi degli uomini che l'avrebbero vista.
5 Then she handed her maid a skin of wine and a flask of oil, fil ed a bag with barley girdle-cakes, cakesof dried fruit and pure loaves, and wrapping all these provisions up gave them to her as wel .	5 Poi porse alla sua ancella un otre di vino e un orciolo d'olio, riempì una bisaccia di grano tostato, di fichi secchi e di pani puri e, fatto un involto di tutti questi recipienti, glieli affidò.
6 They then went out, making for the town gate of Bethulia. There they found Uzziah waiting with the twoelders of the town, Chabris and Charmis.	6 Allora uscirono verso la porta della città di Betulia e trovarono lì presenti Ozia e gli anziani della città, Cabri e Carmi.
7 When they saw Judith, her face so changed and her clothes so different, they were lost in admiration ofher beauty. They said to her:	7 Questi, come la videro cambiata nell'aspetto e con gli abiti mutati, rimasero estremamente ammirati della sua bellezza e le dissero:
8 May the God of our ancestors keep you in his favour! May he crown your designs with success to theglory of the children of Israel, to the greater glory of Jerusalem!	8 "Il Dio dei nostri padri ti conceda grazia e ti dia di compiere i tuoi disegni a glorificazione dei figli d'Israele e ad esaltazione di Gerusalemme".
9 Judith worshipped God, and then she said, 'Have the town gate opened for me so that I can go out andfulfil all the wishes you expressed to me.' They did as she asked and gave orders to the young men to open thegate for her.	9 Dopo aver adorato Dio, essa disse loro: "Ordinate che mi si apra la porta della città e io uscirò per dar compimento alle parole augurali che mi avete rivolto". Quelli diedero ordine ai giovani di guardia di aprirle come aveva chiesto.
10 This done, Judith went out accompanied by her maid, while the men of the town watched her al theway down the mountain and across the valley, until they lost sight of her.	10 Così fecero e Giuditta uscì insieme alla propria ancella. Gli uomini della città continuarono ad osservarla mentre discendeva il monte finché, attraversata la vallata, non poterono più scorgerla.
11 As the women were making straight through the valley, an advance unit of Assyrians interceptedthem,	11 Marciando diritte nella valle, si imbatterono nelle sentinelle avanzate degli Assiri,
12 and, seizing Judith, began to question her. 'Which side are you on? Where do you come from? Whereare you going?' 'I am a daughter of the Hebrews,' she replied, 'and I am fleeing from them since they wil soon beyour prey.	12 le quali la presero e la interrogarono: "Di che gente sei, da dove vieni e dove vai?". Essa rispose: "Sono figlia degli Ebrei e fuggo dal loro cospetto, perché stanno per essere consegnati a voi, per essere divorati.
13 I am on my way to see Holofernes, the general of your army, to give him trustworthy information. Ishall show him the road to take if he wants to capture all the hil -country without losing one man or one life.'	13 Voglio recarmi alla presenza di Oloferne, comandante in capo del vostro esercito, per rivolgergli delle parole di verità; gli indicherò la via per la quale potrà passare e rendersi padrone di tutta la montagna, senza perdere neppure uno dei suoi uomini né un alito di vita".
14 As the men listened to what she was saying, they stared in astonishment at the sight of such abeautiful woman.	14 Quando gli uomini ebbero udito le sue parole e osservato l'aspetto di lei, che appariva loro come un prodigio di bellezza, le dissero:
15 'It wil prove the saving of you,' they said to her, 'coming down to see our master of your own accord.You had better go to his tent; some of our men wil escort you and hand you over to him.	15 "Hai messo in salvo la tua vita, essendoti affrettata a venir giù al cospetto del nostro signore, e ora procedi verso la sua tenda; alcuni di noi ti accompagneranno, finché non ti avranno consegnato nelle sue mani.
16 Once you are in his presence do not be afraid. Tel him what you have just told us and you wil be weltreated.'	16 Quando poi starai al suo cospetto, non temere nel tuo cuore, ma riferisci secondo quello che hai detto e ti tratterà bene".
17 They then detailed a hundred of their men as escort for herself and her attendant, and these led themto the tent of Holofernes.	17 Scelsero pertanto tra loro un centinaio di uomini che si affiancarono ad essa e alla sua ancella e le condussero alla tenda di Oloferne.
18 News of her coming had already spread through the tents, and there was a general stir in the camp.She was still outside the tent of Holofernes waiting to be announced, when a crowd began forming round her.	18 In tutto il campo ci fu un accorrere da ogni parte, perché la notizia del suo arrivo si era sparsa negli attendamenti. Coloro che erano accorsi le facevano cerchio, mentre essa stava fuori della tenda di Oloferne in attesa di essere a lui annunciata.
19 They were immediately impressed by her beauty and impressed with the Israelites because of her.'Who could despise a people who have women like this?' they kept saying. 'Better not leave one of them alive;let any go and they could twist the whole world round their fingers!'	19 Erano ammirati della sua bellezza e a motivo di lei ammiravano gl'Israeliti, dicendosi a vicenda: "Chi potrebbe disprezzare questo popolo che possiede tali donne? Non è bene lasciar sopravvivere neppure uno di loro, giacché liberi, sarebbero capaci di abbindolare tutto il mondo".
20 The bodyguard and adjutants of Holofernes then came out and led Judith into the tent.	20 Allora uscirono le guardie del corpo di Oloferne e tutti i suoi aiutanti e la introdussero nella tenda.
21 Holofernes was resting on his bed under a canopy of purple and gold studded with emeralds andprecious stones.	21 Oloferne si riposava nel suo letto sotto le cortine, che erano di porpora, d'oro, di smeraldo e di pietre preziose intessute.
22 The men announced her and he came out to the entrance to the tent, with silver torches carriedbefore him.	22 Gli annunciarono la presenza di lei ed egli uscì verso l'entrata della tenda preceduto da fiaccole d'argento.
23 When Judith confronted the general and his adjutant, the beauty of her face astonished them al . Shefel on her face and did homage to him, but his servants raised her from the ground.	23 Quando Giuditta si trovò alla presenza di lui e dei suoi aiutanti, tutti rimasero stupiti della bellezza del suo volto. Ella si prostrò con la faccia a terra per adorarlo, ma i servi di lui la fecero alzare.
