NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Thus Judith called on the God of Israel. When she had finished praying,	1 Apenas terminó de invocar al Dios de Israel con todas estas palabras,
2 she got up from the floor, summoned her maid and went down into the rooms which she used onSabbath days and festivals.	2 Judit se levantó del suelo, llamó a su servidora y bajó a la casa donde pasaba los sábados y los días de fiesta.
3 There she removed the sackcloth she was wearing and taking off her widow's dress, she washed alover, anointed herself plentiful y with perfumes, dressed her hair, wrapped a turban round it and put on the robeof joy she used to wear when her husband Manasseh was alive.	3 Luego se despojó del sayal que tenía ceñido, se quitó su ropa de viuda, se lavó el cuerpo con agua, se ungió con perfumes y peinó sus cabellos. Después ciño la cabeza con un turbante y se puso la ropa de fiesta con que solía engalanarse cuando aún vivía su marido Manasés;
4 She put sandals on her feet, put on her necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings and al her jewel ery, andmade herself beautiful enough to beguile the eye of any man who saw her.	4 se calzó las sandalias, se puso collares, brazaletes, anillos, aros y todas sus joyas: en una palabra, se embelleció hasta el extremo, para seducir a todos los que la vieran.
5 Then she handed her maid a skin of wine and a flask of oil, fil ed a bag with barley girdle-cakes, cakesof dried fruit and pure loaves, and wrapping all these provisions up gave them to her as wel .	5 En seguida, entregó a su servidora un odre de vino y una vasija de aceite; llenó una bolsa con granos tostados de cebada, una torta de higos secos y panes puros; lo envolvió todo cuidadosamente y lo entregó a su servidora.
6 They then went out, making for the town gate of Bethulia. There they found Uzziah waiting with the twoelders of the town, Chabris and Charmis.	6 Después se dirigieron a la puerta de Betulia, y encontraron apostados junto a ella a Ozías y a los ancianos de la ciudad, Cabris y Carmis.
7 When they saw Judith, her face so changed and her clothes so different, they were lost in admiration ofher beauty. They said to her:	7 Cuando vieron a Judit con el rostro trasformado y la ropa cambiada, quedaron maravillados de su hermosura y dijeron:
8 May the God of our ancestors keep you in his favour! May he crown your designs with success to theglory of the children of Israel, to the greater glory of Jerusalem!	8 «Que el Dios de nuestros padres te conceda ser bien recibida y dar cumplimiento a lo que te has propuesto, para orgullo de los israelitas y exaltación de Jerusalén».
9 Judith worshipped God, and then she said, 'Have the town gate opened for me so that I can go out andfulfil all the wishes you expressed to me.' They did as she asked and gave orders to the young men to open thegate for her.	9 Judit adoró a Dios y les respondió: «Ordenen que me abran las puertas de la ciudad, para que yo salga a cumplir lo que acaban de expresarme». Ellos ordenaron a los jóvenes que le abrieran, como ella lo había pedido.
10 This done, Judith went out accompanied by her maid, while the men of the town watched her al theway down the mountain and across the valley, until they lost sight of her.	10 Así lo hicieron, y Judit salió acompañada de su servidora. Los hombres de la ciudad la siguieron con la mirada, mientras descendía de la montaña hasta que atravesó el valle, y allí la perdieron de vista.
11 As the women were making straight through the valley, an advance unit of Assyrians interceptedthem,	11 Mientras caminaban a lo largo del valle, les salió al encuentro una avanzada de los asirios.
12 and, seizing Judith, began to question her. 'Which side are you on? Where do you come from? Whereare you going?' 'I am a daughter of the Hebrews,' she replied, 'and I am fleeing from them since they wil soon beyour prey.	12 Ellos detuvieron a Judit y la interrogaron: «¿De dónde eres? ¿De dónde vienes y a dónde vas?». Ella respondió: «Soy una hebrea, pero huyo de mi pueblo, porque está a punto de convertirse en presa de ustedes.
13 I am on my way to see Holofernes, the general of your army, to give him trustworthy information. Ishall show him the road to take if he wants to capture all the hil -country without losing one man or one life.'	13 Por eso vengo a presentarme ante Holofernes, el general en jefe del ejército, para darle buenas informaciones; yo le indicaré un camino por el que podrá pasar para apoderarse de toda la región montañosa, sin que pierda la vida ni uno solo de sus hombres».
14 As the men listened to what she was saying, they stared in astonishment at the sight of such abeautiful woman.	14 Al oír sus palabras y contemplar su rostro, que los dejó cautivados por su extraordinaria hermosura, aquellos hombres le dijeron:
15 'It wil prove the saving of you,' they said to her, 'coming down to see our master of your own accord.You had better go to his tent; some of our men wil escort you and hand you over to him.	15 «Has puesto a salvo tu vida, apresurándote a presentarte ante nuestro señor. Ahora, sigue adelante hasta su tienda de campaña, y algunos de nosotros te escoltarán hasta hacerte comparecer ante él.
16 Once you are in his presence do not be afraid. Tel him what you have just told us and you wil be weltreated.'	16 Cuando te presentes, no temas: comunícale todo lo que acabas de decir, y él te tratará bien».
17 They then detailed a hundred of their men as escort for herself and her attendant, and these led themto the tent of Holofernes.	17 Entonces eligieron a cien de sus hombres, para que la escoltaran, a ella y a su servidora, hasta la carpa de Holofernes.
18 News of her coming had already spread through the tents, and there was a general stir in the camp.She was still outside the tent of Holofernes waiting to be announced, when a crowd began forming round her.	18 Cuando se divulgó por el campamento la noticia de su llegada, se produjo una agitación general: todos se acercaban y la rodeaban, mientras ella permanecía fuera de la carpa de Holofernes, esperando que la anunciaran.
19 They were immediately impressed by her beauty and impressed with the Israelites because of her.'Who could despise a people who have women like this?' they kept saying. 'Better not leave one of them alive;let any go and they could twist the whole world round their fingers!'	19 Maravillados de su hermosura, no podían menos de admirar también a los israelitas y se decían unos a otros: «¿Quién podrá despreciar a un pueblo que tiene semejantes mujeres? ¡No conviene dejar en pie ni a uno solo de sus hombres, porque los sobrevivientes serán capaces de seducir a toda la tierra!».
20 The bodyguard and adjutants of Holofernes then came out and led Judith into the tent.	20 Los guardias personales de Holofernes y todos sus oficiales salieron e introdujeron a Judit en la carpa.
21 Holofernes was resting on his bed under a canopy of purple and gold studded with emeralds andprecious stones.	21 Holofernes estaba reclinado en su diván, bajo un dosel de púrpura, recamado en oro, esmeraldas y piedras preciosas.
22 The men announced her and he came out to the entrance to the tent, with silver torches carriedbefore him.	22 Judit fue anunciada, y él salió a la antecámara de la carpa, precedido de lámparas de plata.
23 When Judith confronted the general and his adjutant, the beauty of her face astonished them al . Shefel on her face and did homage to him, but his servants raised her from the ground.	23 Cuando apareció Judit delante de él y de sus oficiales, todos quedaron maravillados por la hermosura de su rostro: ella se postró con el rostro en tierra, pero los servidores de Holofernes la levantaron.
