1 This is what happened when Yahweh took Elijah up to heaven in the whirlwind: Elijah and Elisha set outfrom Gilgal,	1 Siccome il Signore voleva rapire Elia al cielo in un turbine, Elia ed Eliseo partirono da Galgala.
2 and Elijah said to Elisha, 'You stay here, for Yahweh is only sending me to Bethel.' But Elisha replied,'As Yahweh lives and as you yourself live, I wil not leave you!' and they went down to Bethel.	2 Ed Elia disse ad Eliseo: « Fermati qui, perchè il Signore mi manda fino a Betel ». Ma Eliseo gli rispose: « Viva il Signore e viva l'anima tua! Io non ti lascerò ». Quando furono discesi a Betel,
3 The brotherhood of prophets living at Bethel came out to meet Elisha and said, 'Do you know thatYahweh wil carry your lord and master away today?' 'Yes, I know,' he said, 'be quiet.'	3 uscirono incontro ad Eliseo i figli dei profeti ch'erano a Betel, e gli dissero: « Non sai tu che oggi il Signore ti toglierà il tuo padrone? » Egli rispose: « Tacete: lo so anch'io! »
4 Elijah said, 'Elisha, you stay here, Yahweh is only sending me to Jericho.' But he replied, 'As Yahwehlives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you!' and they went on to Jericho.	4 Elia disse poi ad Eliseo: « Fermati qui, perchè il Signore mi manda a Gerico ». Ma Eliseo disse: « Viva il Signore e viva l'anima tua! Io non ti lascerò ». Giunti che furono a Gerico,
5 The brotherhood of prophets living at Jericho went up to Elisha and said, 'Do you know that Yahweh wil carry your lord and master away today?' 'Yes, I know,' he said, 'be quiet.'	5 i figli dei profeti che erano a Gerico, si accostarono ad Eliseo e gli dissero: « Non sai tu che oggi il Signore ti toglierà il tuo padrone? » Egli disse: « Tacete, lo so anch'io! »
6 Elijah said, 'Elisha, you stay here, Yahweh is only sending me to the Jordan.' But he replied, 'As Yahwehlives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you!' And they went on together.	6 Poi Elia gli disse: «Fermati qui, perchè il Signore mi manda fino al Giordano ». Ma egli rispose: « Viva il Signore e viva l'anima tua! Non ti lascerò ». Allora andarono tutt'e due insieme,
7 Fifty of the brotherhood of prophets followed them, halting some distance away as the two of them stoodbeside the Jordan.	7 seguiti da cinquanta uomini dei figli dei profeti che si fermarono di faccia a loro da lontano. Giunti ambedue sulla riva del Giordano,
8 Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water; and the water divided to left and right, and the twoof them crossed over dry-shod.	8 Elia prese il suo mantello, lo arrotolò, e percosse le acque, le quali si divisero in due parti, e tutt'e due passarono per l'asciutto.
9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, 'Make your request. What can I do for you before I amsnatched away from you?' Elisha answered, 'Let me inherit a double share of your spirit.'	9 Passati che furono, Elia disse ad Eliseo: « Chiedi ciò che desideri che io ti faccia, avanti che io ti sia tolto ». Eliseo disse: « Chiedo che si raddoppi in me il tuo spirito ».
10 'Your request is difficult,' Elijah said. 'If you see me while I am being snatched away from you, it wil beas you ask; if not, it wil not be so.'	10 Elia rispose: « Tu hai domandato una cosa difficile; tuttavia, se tu mi vedrai quando ti sarò tolto, avrai quello che hai domandato, ma se non mi vedrai, non l'avrai ».
11 Now as they walked on, talking as they went, a chariot of fire appeared and horses of fire comingbetween the two of them; and Elijah went up to heaven in the whirlwind.	11 Mentre seguitavano a camminare e a discorrere insieme, ecco un cocchio di fuoco e dei cavalli di fuoco a separarli l'un dall'altro. Elia salì al cielo in un turbine,
12 Elisha saw it, and shouted, 'My father! My father! Chariot of Israel and its chargers!' Then he lost sightof him, and taking hold of his own clothes he tore them in half.	12 mentre Eliseo stava a guardare e gridava: « Padre mio, padre mio, cocchio d'Israele e suo duce! » Quando non lo vide più, prese le sue vesti e le stracciò in due parti.
13 He picked up Elijah's cloak which had fal en, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.	13 Poi raccolse il mantello d'Elia, che gli era caduto, e tornato indietro si fermò sulla riva del Giordano.
14 He took Elijah's cloak and struck the water. 'Where is Yahweh, the God of Elijah?' he cried. As hestruck the water it divided to right and left, and Elisha crossed over.	14 Col mantello d'Elia, a lui caduto, percosse le acque; ma esse non si divisero. Allora egli disse: « Dov'è ora il Dio d'Elia? » Percosse le acque ed esse si divisero di qua e di là ed Eliseo passò.
15 The brotherhood of prophets saw him in the distance, and said, 'The spirit of Elijah has come to rest onElisha'; they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.	15 Avendo ciò veduto i figli dei profeti che erano a Gerico, di faccia, esclamarono: « Lo spirito d'Elia s'è posato sopra Eliseo! » E venutigli incontro, si prostrarono davanti a lui fino a terra.
16 'Look,' they said, 'your servants have fifty strong men with them, let them go and look for your master;the Spirit of Yahweh may have taken him up and thrown him down on a mountain or into a val ey.' 'Send no one,'he replied.	16 E gli dissero: « Ecco, coi tuoi servi ci sono cinquanta uomini forti che possono andare a cercar il tuo padrone, se mai lo Spirito del Signore lo avesse preso e gettato su qualche monte, o in qualche valle ». Eliseo rispose: « Non li mandate ».
17 But they so shamed him with their insistence that he consented. So they sent fifty men who searchedfor three days without finding him.	17 Ma essi insistettero fino a tanto che egli non si arrese e disse: « Mandate ». Essi mandarono i cinquanta uomini, i quali cercarono per tre giorni senza averlo trovato.
18 They then came back to Elisha who had stayed in Jericho; he said, 'Didn't I tell you not to go?'	18 Allora tornarono da Eliseo che s'era fermato in Gerico, il quale disse loro: « Non ve l 'avevo detto io: non mandate? »
19 The people of the city said to Elisha, 'The city is pleasant to live in, as my lord indeed can see, but thewater is foul and the country suffers from miscarriages.'	19 La gente della città disse ad Eliseo: « Ecco, il soggiorno di questa città è ottimo, come tu stesso, o signore, vedi, ma le acque son pessime e la terra è sterile ».
20 'Bring me a new bowl,' he said, 'and put some salt in it.' They brought it to him.	20 Ed egli disse: « Portatemi un vaso nuovo e mettetevi del sale ». Portato che gliel'ebbero,
21 Then he went to the source of the water, threw salt into it and said, 'Yahweh says this, "I make thiswater wholesome: neither death nor miscarriage shal come from it any more." '	21 egli andò alla sorgente delle acque, e, gettatovi del sale, disse: « Queste cose dice il Signore: Ho rese sane queste acque e non ne verrà più nè morte nè sterilità ».
22 And the water became wholesome, as it is today, exactly as Elisha had said it would.	22 E quelle acque furon rese sane fino a questo giorno, secondo le parole dette da Eliseo.
23 From there he went up to Bethel, and while he was on the road, some smal boys came out of the townand jeered at him. 'Hurry up, baldy!' they shouted. 'Come on up, baldy!'	23 Di là egli salì a Betel. Or mentre saliva per la via, dei ragazzetti, usciti dalla città, lo beffeggiavano, dicendo: « Sali, o calvo; sali, o calvo ».
24 He turned round and looked at them; and he cursed them in the name of Yahweh. And two bears cameout of the forest and savaged forty-two of the boys.	24 Egli, voltatosi a guardarli, li maledisse nel nome del Signore; e due orsi usciti dal bosco sbranarono quarantadue di quei ragazzi.
25 From there he went on to Mount Carmel and then returned to Samaria.	25 Di là egli andò sul monte Carmelo, e poi tornò a Samaria.
