1 Kings 12

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Rehoboam then went to Shechem, al Israel having come to Shechem to proclaim him king.	1 Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car c'est à Sichem que tout Israël était venu pour le proclamer roi.
2 (As soon as Jeroboam son of Nebat heard the news -- he was stil in Egypt, where he had taken refugefrom King Solomon -- he returned from Egypt.	2 (Dès que Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, fut informé -- il était encore en Egypte, où il avait fui le roiSalomon --, il revint d'Egypte.
3 They now sent for him, and Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel came.) And they spoke asfol ows to Rehoboam,	3 On fit appeler Jéroboam et il vint, lui et toute l'assemblée d'Israël.) Ils parlèrent ainsi à Roboam:
4 'Your father laid a cruel yoke on us; if you wil lighten your father's cruel slavery, that heavy yoke whichhe imposed on us, we are wil ing to serve you.'	4 "Ton père a rendu pénible notre joug, allège maintenant le dur servage de ton père, la lourdeur dujoug qu'il nous imposa, et nous te servirons!"
5 He said to them, 'Go away for three days and then come back to me.' And the people went away.	5 Il leur dit: "Retirez-vous pour trois jours, puis revenez vers moi", et le peuple s'en alla.
6 King Rehoboam then consulted the elders who had been in attendance on his father Solomon while hewas alive, and said, 'How do you advise me to answer this people?'	6 Le roi Roboam prit conseil des anciens, qui avaient assisté son père Salomon pendant qu'il vivait, etdemanda: "Quelle réponse conseillez-vous de faire à ce peuple?"
7 They replied, 'If you become the servant of this people today, and submit to them and give them a fairreply, then they wil remain your servants for ever.'	7 Ils lui répondirent: "Si tu te fais aujourd'hui serviteur de ces gens, si tu te soumets et leur donnes debonnes paroles, alors ils seront toujours tes serviteurs."
8 But he rejected the advice given him by the elders and consulted the young men in attendance on him,who had grown up with him.	8 Mais il repoussa le conseil que les anciens avaient donné et consulta des jeunes gens quil'assistaient, ses compagnons d'enfance.
9 He said, 'How do you advise us to answer these people who have been saying, "Lighten the yokewhich your father imposed on us!"? '	9 Il leur demanda: "Que conseillez-vous que nous répondions à ce peuple qui m'a parlé ainsi: Allègele joug que ton père nous a imposé?"
10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, 'This is the way to answer these people whohave been saying, "Your father made our yoke heavy, you must lighten it for us!" This is the right thing to say tothem, "My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.	10 Les jeunes gens, ses compagnons d'enfance, lui répondirent: "Voici ce que tu diras à ce peuple quit'a dit: Ton père a rendu pesant notre joug, mais toi allège notre charge, voici ce que tu leur répondras: Mon petitdoigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père!
11 Although my father laid a heavy yoke on you, I shall make it heavier stil . My father controlled you withthe whip, but I shall apply a spiked lash!" '	11 Ainsi, mon père vous a fait porter un joug pesant, moi j'ajouterai encore à votre joug; mon pèrevous a châtiés avec des lanières, moi je vous châtierai avec des fouets à pointes de fer!"
12 On the third day Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam in obedience to the king'sinstruction: 'Come back to me in three days' time.'	12 Jéroboam avec tout le peuple vint à Roboam le troisième jour, selon cet ordre qu'il avait donné:"Revenez vers moi le troisième jour."
13 And the king gave the people a harsh answer, rejecting the advice given him by the elders	13 Le roi fit au peuple une dure réponse, il rejeta le conseil que les anciens avaient donné
14 and speaking to them as the young men had recommended, 'My father made your yoke heavy, I shallmake it heavier stil ! My father control ed you with the whip, but I shall apply a spiked lash!'	14 et, suivant le conseil des jeunes, il leur parla ainsi: "Mon père a rendu pesant votre joug, moij'ajouterai encore à votre joug; mon père vous a châtiés avec des lanières, moi je vous châtierai avec des fouets àpointes de fer."
15 Thus the king refused to listen to the people, and this was brought about by Yahweh to fulfil thepromise which he had made through Ahijah of Shiloh to Jeroboam son of Nebat.	15 Le roi n'écouta donc pas le peuple: c'était une intervention de Yahvé, pour accomplir la parole qu'ilavait dite à Jéroboam fils de Nebat par le ministère d'Ahiyya de Silo.
16 When al Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, the people answered the king thus: Whatshare have we in David? -No heritage in the son of Jesse! Away to your tents, Israel! Now look after your ownHouse, David! So Israel went home again.	16 Quand les Israélites virent que le roi ne les écoutait pas, ils lui répliquèrent: "Quelle part avons-nous sur David? Nous n'avons pas d'héritage sur le fils de Jessé. A tes tentes, Israël! Et maintenant, pourvois à tamaison, David." Et Israël s'en fut à ses tentes.
17 Rehoboam, however, reigned over those Israelites who lived in the towns of Judah.	17 Quant aux Israélites qui habitaient les villes de Juda, Roboam régna sur eux.
18 When King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was in charge of forced labour, all Israel stoned him todeath, while King Rehoboam managed to mount his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.	18 Le roi Roboam dépêcha Adoram, le chef de la corvée, mais tout Israël le lapida et il mourut; alorsle roi Roboam se vit contraint de monter sur son char pour fuir vers Jérusalem.
19 And Israel has remained in rebel ion against the House of David from that day to this.	19 Et Israël fut séparé de la maison de David, jusqu'à ce jour.
20 When al Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they summoned him to the assembly and madehim king of al Israel; no one remained loyal to the House of David, except the tribe of Judah.	20 Lorsque tout Israël apprit que Jéroboam était revenu, ils l'appelèrent à l'assemblée et ils le firent roisur tout Israël; il n'y eut pour se rallier à la maison de David que la seule tribu de Juda.
21 When Rehoboam reached Jerusalem he mustered the whole House of Judah and the tribe ofBenjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand picked warriors, to fight the House of Israel and win back the kingdomfor Rehoboam son of Solomon.	21 Roboam se rendit à Jérusalem; il convoqua toute la maison de Juda et la tribu de Benjamin, soit180.000 guerriers d'élite, pour combattre la maison d'Israël et rendre le royaume à Roboam fils de Salomon.
22 But the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, man of God,	22 Mais la parole de Dieu fut adressée à Shemaya l'homme de Dieu en ces termes:
23 'Say this to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, to the whole House of Judah, to Benjamin andto the rest of the people,	23 "Dis ceci à Roboam fils de Salomon, roi de Juda, à toute la maison de Juda, à Benjamin et au restedu peuple:
24 "Yahweh says this: Do not go and make war on your brothers, the Israelites; let everyone go home,for this is my doing." ' They obeyed the command of Yahweh and turned back in accordance with his word.	24 Ainsi parle Yahvé. N'allez pas vous battre contre vos frères, les enfants d'Israël; que chacunretourne chez soi, car cet événement vient de moi." Ils écoutèrent la parole de Yahvé et prirent le chemin duretour comme avait dit Yahvé.
25 Jeroboam fortified Shechem in the mountain country of Ephraim and made that his residence. Then,leaving there, he fortified Penuel.	25 Jéroboam fortifia Sichem dans la montagne d'Ephraïm et y séjourna. Puis il sortit de là et fortifiaPenuel.
26 Jeroboam thought to himself, 'As things are, the kingdom wil revert to the House of David.	26 Jéroboam se dit en lui-même: "Comme sont les choses, le royaume va retourner à la maison deDavid.
27 If this people continues to go up to the Temple of Yahweh in Jerusalem to offer sacrifices, thepeople's heart will turn back again to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah, and they wil put me to death.'	27 Si ce peuple continue de monter au Temple de Yahvé à Jérusalem pour offrir des sacrifices, lecoeur du peuple reviendra à son seigneur, Roboam, roi de Juda, et on me tuera."
28 So the king thought this over and then made two golden calves; he said to the people, 'You havebeen going up to Jerusalem long enough. Here is your God, Israel, who brought you out of Egypt!'	28 Après avoir délibéré, il fit deux veaux d'or et dit au peuple: "Assez longtemps vous êtes montés àJérusalem! Israël, voici ton Dieu qui t'a fait monter du pays d'Egypte."
29 He set one up at Bethel,	29 Il dressa l'un à Béthel,
30 and the people went in procession in front of the other one al the way to Dan. In Israel this gave riseto sin, for the people went to Bethel to worship the one, and all the way to Dan to worship the other.	30 et le peuple alla en procession devant l'autre jusqu'à Dan.
31 He set up shrines on the high places and appointed priests from ordinary families, who were not oflevitical descent.	31 Il établit le temple des hauts lieux et il institua des prêtres pris du commun, qui n'étaient pas fils deLévi.
32 Jeroboam also instituted a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth of the month, like the feast keptin Judah, when he offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did at Bethel, offering sacrifices to the calves which hehad made and, at Bethel, instal ing the priests of the high places which he had set up.	32 Jéroboam célébra une fête le huitième mois, le quinzième jour du mois, comme la fête qu'oncélébrait en Juda, et il monta à l'autel. Voilà comme il a agi à Béthel, sacrifiant aux veaux qu'il avait faits, et ilétablit à Béthel les prêtres des hauts lieux, qu'il avait institués.
33 On the fifteenth of the eighth month, the month which he had chosen deliberately, he offeredsacrifices on the altar which he had made at Bethel; he instituted a feast for the Israelites and himself went up tothe altar to burn the sacrifice.	33 Il monta à l'autel qu'il avait fait, le quinzième jour du huitième mois, le mois qu'il avaitarbitrairement choisi; il institua une fête pour les Israélites et il monta à l'autel pour offrir le sacrifice.
