1 So the war dragged on between the House of Saul and the House of David, but David grew steadilystronger and the House of Saul steadily weaker.	1 Prolongou-se por muito tempo a guerra entre a casa de Saul e a de Davi. 5 the sixth Ithream, by David's wife, Eglah. These were born to David at Hebron.	5 e o sexto Jetraão, filho de Egla, mulher de Davi. Estes foram os filhos que nasceram a Davi em Hebron.
6 This is what took place during the war between the House of Saul and the House of David. Abner tookcomplete control in the House of Saul.	6 Enquanto durou a guerra entre a casa de Saul e a de Davi, Abner teve autoridade na casa de Saul.
7 Now, there was a concubine of Saul's called Rizpah daughter of Aiah, and Abner took her. Ishbaal saidto Abner, 'Why have you slept with my father's concubine?'	7 Ora, Saul tinha uma concubina chamada Resfa, filha de Aia. Isboset disse a Abner: Por que te aproximaste da concubina de meu pai?

'Here am I, ful offaithful love towards the House of Saul your father, his brothers and his friends, not leaving you to the hands ofDavid, and now you find fault with me over a woman!	8 Abner indignou-se com estas palavras de Isboset e disse: Sou porventura uma cabeça de cão a serviço de Judá? Enquanto neste momento trabalho pela casa de Saul, teu pai, pelos seus irmãos e seus amigos, não os deixando cair nas mãos de Davi, vens tu acusar-me de pecado com esta mulher?
9 May God bring unnameable il s on Abner, and worse ones, too, if I do not bring about what Yahweh hassworn to David:	9 Deus me trate com o maior rigor, se eu não procurar para Davi tudo o que o Senhor lhe prometeu,
10 to take the sovereignty from the House of Saul, and establish David's throne over Israel as well asJudah, from Dan to Beersheba!'	10 a saber, tirar a realeza da casa de Saul e firmar o trono de Davi sobre Israel e sobre Judá, desde Dã até Bersabéia!
11 Ishbaal dared not say a single word to Abner in reply, as he was afraid of him.	11 Isboset não soube o que responder a Abner, porque o temia.
12 Abner sent messengers on his own behalf to say to David, '. . . and furthermore, come to anagreement with me and I wil give you my support to win al Israel over to you.'	12 Abner enviou então mensageiros a Davi, para dizer-lhe: De quem é a terra? Faze aliança comigo e eu te darei mão forte para reunir em torno de ti todo o Israel.
13 'Very wel ,' David said, 'I wil come to an agreement with you. I impose one condition however; you wilnot be admitted to my presence unless you bring me Michal, Saul's daughter, when you come to see me.'	13 Davi respondeu: Está bem; farei aliança contigo, mas com uma condição: não te apresentarás diante de mim sem trazer contigo Micol, a filha de Saul, quando vieres ver-me.
14 David then sent messengers to say to Ishbaal son of Saul, 'Give me back my wife Michal, whom Iacquired for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.'	14 Davi enviou mensageiros a Isboset, filho de Saul, para dizer-lhe: Devolve a minha mulher Micol, que desposei ao preço de cem prepúcios de filisteus.
15 So Ishbaal sent for her to be taken from her husband Paltiel son of Laish.	15 Isboset ordenou que a tirassem de seu marido, Faltiel, filho de Lais,
16 Her husband set off with her and fol owed her, weeping as he went, as far as Bahurim; but Abner saidto him, 'Go back!' and he went.	16 que a acompanhou chorando até Bahurim. Ali, Abner disse-lhe: Volta para a tua casa. E ele voltou.
17 Now Abner conferred with the elders of Israel. 'For a long time now,' he said, 'you have wanted Davidas your king.	17 Abner pôs-se em contato com os anciãos de Israel e disse-lhes: Já faz tempo que desejais ter Davi por rei.
18 Now you must take action, since Yahweh has said of David, "By the hand of my servant David I shaldeliver my people Israel from the clutches of the Philistines and al their enemies." '	18 Fazei-o, pois, agora, porque o Senhor disse de Davi: por meio de Davi, meu servo, livrarei o meu povo de Israel da mão dos filisteus e de todos os seus inimigos.
19 Abner also spoke to the men of Benjamin and then went to Hebron to tel David everything that hadbeen agreed by Israel and the House of Benjamin.	19 Abner, que havia dito a mesma coisa aos benjaminitas, foi a Hebron para informar Davi de tudo o que fora aceito por Israel e por toda a casa de Benjamim.
20 Abner, accompanied by twenty men, came to David at Hebron, and David held a feast for Abner andthe men who were with him.	20 E apresentou-se a Davi, em Hebron, acompanhado de vinte homens. Davi deu um banquete a Abner e seus companheiros.
21 Abner then said to David, 'I must get up and go. I am going to rally al Israel to my lord the king, so thatthey will make an alliance with you, and you wil reign over al that you desire.' So David al owed Abner to go,and he went unmolested.	21 Disse então Abner a Davi: Irei para reunir ao redor de meu senhor, o rei, todos os israelitas; farão aliança contigo e reinarás sobre toda a terra que quiseres. Davi despediu Abner, que partiu tranqüilamente.
22 David's retainers were just then coming back with Joab from a raid, bringing a great quantity of bootywith them. Abner was no longer with David at Hebron, since David had allowed him to go, and he had goneunmolested.	22 Entretanto, os homens de Davi voltavam com Joab de uma expedição, trazendo uma grande presa. {Abner não estava mais com Davi em Hebron, porque Davi o tinha despedido e ele partira em paz.}
23 When Joab and the whole company with him had arrived, Joab was told, 'Abner son of Ner has beento the king, and the king has al owed Abner to go away unmolested.'	23 E, voltando Joab com toda a sua tropa, disseram-lhe que Abner, filho de Ner, viera ter com o rei, e este o deixara ir em paz.
24 Joab then went to the king and said, 'What have you done? Abner comes to you and you let him goaway and now he has gone-why?	24 Joab foi ter com o rei e disse-lhe: Que fizeste? Abner, filho de Ner, veio a ti; por que o deixaste partir?
25 You know Abner son of Ner! He came to trick you, to discover your every move, to find out what youare doing.'	25 Tu o conheces; {bem sabes que} é para enganar-te, para espiar tuas idas e vindas e sondar tudo o que fazes.
26 Joab left David's presence and sent messengers after Abner and these, unknown to David, broughthim back from the storage-wel at Sirah.	26 Deixando Davi, Joab mandou emissários atrás de Abner, que o fizeram voltar do poço de Sira, sem que Davi o soubesse.
27 When Abner reached Hebron, Joab took him aside in the town-gate, as if to have a quiet word withhim, and there struck him a mortal blow in the bel y to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel.	27 Quando Abner chegou a Hebron, Joab, tomou-o à parte, para dentro da porta, como para falar-lhe em particular, e feriu-o ali mortalmente no ventre, vingando o sangue de seu irmão Asael.
28 Afterwards, when David heard of this, he said, 'I and my kingdom are for ever innocent before Yahwehof the blood of Abner son of Ner;	28 Quando Davi soube do acontecido, exclamou: Sou inocente, eu e o meu reino, diante do Senhor, do sangue de Abner, filho de Ner!
29 may it fal on the head of Joab and on al his family! May the House of Joab never be free of menafflicted with haemorrhage or a virulent skin-disease, whose strength is in the distaff, who fall by the sword, wholack food.'	29 Que ele caia sobre a cabeça de Joab e de toda a sua família! Não faltem jamais em sua casa homens atacados de sarna ou lepra, que trabalhem no fuso, caiam pela espada, definhem de fome!
30 (Joab and his brother Abishai had murdered Abner because he killed their brother Asahel at the battleof Gibeon.)	30 Joab e seu irmão Abisaí tinham assassinado Abner por ter este matado seu irmão Asael depois da batalha de Gabaon.
31 David then said to Joab and the whole company with him, 'Tear your clothes, put on sackcloth, andmourn over Abner,' and King David walked behind the bier.	31 Davi disse a Joab e a toda a sua tropa: Rasgai vossas vestes, cobri-vos de sacos e pranteai Abner! E o rei seguiu atrás do féretro.
32 They buried Abner at Hebron, and the king wept aloud on his grave, and the people al wept too.	32 Sepultaram Abner em Hebron. O rei pôs-se a chorar em alta voz sobre seu túmulo, e todo o povo chorou.
33 The king made this lament over Abner: Should Abner have died as a brute dies?	33 E Davi cantou a seguinte lamentação, chorando Abner: Devia Abner morrer como morrem os insensatos?!
34 Your hands were not tied, your feet not chained; you fel as a man falls at the hands of criminals. Andal the people wept for him louder than ever.	34 Tuas mãos não estavam algemadas, nem acorrentados os teus pés. Caíste como se cai diante de celerados.
35 The people then al tried to persuade David to have some food while it was still daylight, but Davidswore this oath, 'May God bring unnameable il s on me, and worse il s, too, if I taste bread or anything whateveruntil the sun is down!'	35 E o povo chorou sobre ele. Depois, como todo mundo viesse a Davi insistindo em que ele tomasse algum alimento antes de acabar o dia, ele fez este juramento: Que o Senhor me trate com todo o seu rigor, se eu comer pão ou qualquer outra coisa, antes do pôr-do-sol.
36 Al the people took note of this and it pleased them; indeed, everything the king did pleased thepeople.	36 Todo o povo o soube e o aprovou, como aliás lhe parecia sempre bom tudo o que o rei fazia.
37 That day, al the people and al Israel understood that the king had had no part in the murder of Abnerson of Ner.	37 Todo o exército e todo o Israel reconheceu naquele dia que o rei não tivera parte alguma no assassínio de Abner, filho de Ner.
38 The king said to his retainers, 'Do you not realise that a prince, a great man, has fal en in Israel today?	38 O rei disse aos seus servos: Não sabeis que um chefe, um grande chefe caiu hoje em Israel?
39 I, though anointed king, am weak at present, and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too strong forme. May Yahweh repay the criminal as his crime deserves!'	39 Quanto a mim, sou ainda fraco, embora tenha recebido a unção real. Esses homens, filhos de Sarvia, são mais fortes do que eu. Que o Senhor retribua àqueles que fizeram o mal segundo os seus próprios atos!
