1 The king shuddered. He went up to the room over the gate and burst into tears; and, as he wept, hekept saying, 'Oh, my son Absalom! My son! My son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you! Oh, Absalom myson, my son!'	1 - Fu riferito a Joab che il re piangeva ed era in lutto per il figlio suo,
2 Word was brought to Joab, 'The king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.'	2 e la vittoria di quel giorno si cambiò per tutto il popolo in cagione di duolo, poichè il popolo sentì dirsi in quel giorno: «Il re si duole per il suo figliuolo».
3 And for the entire army that day, victory was turned to mourning, the troops having learnt that the kingwas grieving for his son.	3 E il popolo evitò in quel giorno di entrare nella città, come suol astenersi un popolo sconfitto e fuggito dalla battaglia.
4 And that day the troops came furtively back into town, like troops creeping shamefacedly away whendeserting in battle.	4 Inoltre il re si coprì il capo e ad alta voce gridava: «Figliuol mio Absalom! Absalom figliuol mio, figliuol mio!».
5 The king had covered his face and kept crying aloud, 'My son Absalom! Oh, Absalom my son, myson!'	5 Joab allora entrò nella casa del re e disse: «Oggi tu hai coperto di confusione la faccia di tutti i tuoi servi, che hanno salvato la tua vita e quella dei tuoi figliuoli e delle tue figliuole, delle tue mogli e delle tue concubine.
6 Joab went inside to the king and said, 'Today you have made al your servants feel ashamed-today,when they have saved your life, the lives of your sons and daughters, the lives of your wives and the lives ofyour concubines!-because you love those who hate you and hate those who love you.	6 Tu ami quelli che ti odiano e hai in odio quei che ti amano e oggi hai mostrato che non ti curi dei tuoi duci e dei tuoi soldati, e ho veramente conosciuto ora che, se Absalom vivesse e noi tutti fossimo morti, ne avresti piacere.
7 Today you have made it plain that commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you -- for today I cansee that you would be content if we were all dead, provided that Absalom was alive!	7 Ora adunque alzati, vieni fuori e parlando soddisfa i tuoi servi, poichè ti giuro per il Signore, che se tu non esci, neppur uno rimarrà teco questa notte e questo sarà per te peggio di tutti i mali che ti sian capitati dalla tua adolescenza fino ad ora».
8 Now get up, come out and reassure your soldiers; for if you do not come out, I swear by Yahweh, notone man wil stay with you tonight; and this will be a worse misfortune for you than anything that has happenedto you from your youth until now!'	8 Si alzò adunque il re e si pose a sedere alla porta; a tutto il popolo fu annunziato che il re se ne stava seduto alla porta, e tutta la moltitudine venne a presentarsi al re. Israele poi fuggì alle sue tende.
9 The king got up and took his seat at the gate. An announcement was made to the whole army: 'Theking is sitting at the gate.' And the whole army assembled in front of the king.	9 Ora in tutte le tribù d'Israele il popolo altercava e diceva: «Il re ci liberò dalle mani dei nostri nemici; egli ci salvò dalle mani dei Filistei ed ora fuggì da questa terra a cagione di Absalom.
10 Israel had fled, dispersing to their homes. Throughout the tribes of Israel al was dissension and people began saying, 'The king, having freed us from the clutches of our enemies, having saved us from theclutches of the Philistines, has himself had to flee the country to escape from Absalom;	10 Absalom poi che noi abbiamo unto re sopra di noi, è morto in battaglia. Fino a quando non parlerete di richiamare il re?».
11 and now Absalom, whom we had anointed to reign over us, has died in battle. Why does no onesuggest that the king should be brought back?'What was being said throughout Israel reached the king.	11 Dal canto suo Davide spedì messaggi a Sadoc e ad Abiatar sacerdoti per dire: «Parlate agli anziani di Giuda, e dite loro: - Perchè venite ultimi di tutti a ricondurre il re in sua casa? -». (Infatti quel che si diceva in tutto Israele era pervenuto a conoscenza del re).
12 King David then sent word to the priests Zadok and Abiathar, 'Say to the elders of Judah, "Whyshould you be the last to bring the king home?	12 «Voi siete miei fratelli, mie ossa e mia carne; perchè ultimi di tutti richiamate il re?
13 You are my brothers, you are my own flesh and bone: why should you be the last to bring the kingback?"	13 E ad Amasa dite: - Non sei tu mie ossa e carne mia? Il Signore faccia a me questo e peggio ancora se non ti costituirò stabilmente capo delle mie schiere in luogo di Joab -».
14 And say to Amasa, "Are you not my own flesh and bone? May God bring unnameable il s on me andworse il s, too, if you do not become my permanent army commander instead of Joab!" '	14 Così piegò il cuore di tutti gli uomini di Giuda, come quello di un solo uomo e mandarono dal re a dirgli: «Ritorna tu e tutti i tuoi servi».
15 Thus he rallied the hearts of the men of Judah to a man and, as a result, they sent word to the king,'Come back, you and al who serve you.'	15 E il re fece ritorno e venne fino al Giordano, e tutto [il popolo di] Giuda venne fino a Galgala per incontrare il re a fargli passare il fiume.
16 So the king started home and reached the Jordan. Judah, coming to meet the king to escort himacross the Jordan, had arrived at Gilgal.	16 Semei figlio di Gera figlio di Jemini di Baurim si affrettò a venire incontro al re Davide cogli uomini di Giuda,
17 Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite of Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet KingDavid.	17 avendo seco mille uomini di Beniamino. Anche Siba il servo della casa di Saul e i quindici suoi figli e i venti servi erano con lui e attraversarono il Giordano davanti al re
18 With him were a thousand men from Benjamin. Ziba, servant of the House of Saul, with his fifteensons and twenty servants, arrived at the Jordan before the king	18 e passarono i guadi, per condurre al di là la famiglia del re ed eseguirne gli ordini. Semei poi figlio di Gera, prostratosi dinanzi al re, dopo che egli ebbe passato il Giordano,
19 and worked manful y ferrying the king's family across and doing whatever he required. While the kingwas crossing the Jordan, Shimei son of Gera fel at the king's feet	19 gli disse: «Non tener conto, o mio signore, delle mie iniquità, nè ricordati delle ingiurie del tuo servo, proferite nel giorno in cui tu, re mio signore, uscivi da Gerusalemme, e non ritenerle, o re, in cuor tuo.
20 and said to the king, 'I hope my lord does not regard me as guilty of a crime! Forget about the wrongyour servant did on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. Let my lord not hold my guilt against me.	20 Poichè conosco io tuo servo il mio delitto e perciò oggi me ne venni fra i primi di tutta la casa di Giuseppe e scesi incontro al re mio signore».
21 For your servant is aware of having sinned, and that is why I have come today -- the first member ofthe whole House of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king.'	21 Rispondendo Abisai figlio di Sarvia, disse: «E per queste parole non sarà ucciso Semei, che ha maledetto l'unto del Signore?».
22 At this, Abishai son of Zeruiah spoke up and said, 'Does Shimei not deserve death for having cursedYahweh's anointed?'	22 Ma Davide disse: «Che v'ha tra me e voi figli di Sarvia? Perchè farvi oggi miei avversari? Forse che oggi potrebbe uccidersi un uomo in Israele? Ignoro io forse di esser fatto oggi re d'Israele?».
23 To which David replied, 'What concern is my business to you, sons of Zeruiah, that you shouldoppose my wishes today? Could anyone be put to death in Israel today? Today I know for sure that I am king ofIsrael?'	23 Poi disse a Semei: «Non morirai», e glielo giurò.
24 'Your life is spared,' the king said. And the king gave him his oath.	24 Mifiboset figlio di Saul discese anch'egli incontro al re, coi piedi sporchi e la barba intonsa; dal giorno dell'uscita del re fino al suo ritorno pacifico, non s'era mai lavato le vesti.
25 Meribbaal son of Saul also went down to meet the king. He had not cared for his feet or hands, hehad not trimmed his moustache or washed his clothes from the day of the king's departure til the day of hispeaceful return.	25 Mentre moveva incontro al re in Gerusalemme, il re gli disse: «Perchè non venisti meco, Mifiboset?».
26 When he arrived from Jerusalem to greet the king, the king asked him, 'Why did you not come withme, Meribbaal?'	26 Ed egli rispose: «Re, mio signore, il mio servitore si burlò di me; io, tuo servo, gli aveva detto di allestirmi l'asino affinchè io montandovi sopra andassi col re, poichè io, tuo servo, sono zoppo;
27 'My lord king,' he replied, 'my retainer deceived me. Your servant said to him, "Saddle the donkey forme to ride, so that I can go with the king," your servant being lame.	27 di più egli accusò me tuo servo innanzi al re mio padrone. Ma tu, mio signore, sei come un angelo di Dio; fai quello che ti piace,
28 He has slandered your servant to my lord the king. My lord the king, however, is like the Angel ofGod, so do as you think right.	28 poichè la casa del padre mio non ha meritato dal re mio signore altro che morte; tu invece hai collocato me tuo servo tra i convitati alla tua mensa; di che posso io giustamente lamentarmi? oppure che ho io da gridare di più al re?».
29 My father's entire family deserved no better than death from my lord the king, and yet you admittedyour servant to the ranks of those who eat at your table. What right have I to make any further appeal to theking?'	29 Il re allora gli disse: «Perchè tu parli ancora? Resta fisso quel che ho detto: - Tu e Siba dividetevi i possedimenti-».
30 The king said, 'You need say no more. I rule that you and Ziba divide the property between you.'	30 Ma Mifiboset disse al re: «Che si prenda anche tutto, dacchè il re mio signore ha fatto ritorno in pace alla casa sua».
31 'Let him take it al ,' Meribbaal said to the king, 'since my lord the king has come back home in peace!'	31 Anche Berzellai il Galaadita, scendendo da Rogelim, passò il Giordano col re, pronto anche ad accompagnarlo oltre il fiume.
32 Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim and accompanied the king towards the Jordan,intending to take leave of him at the Jordan.	32 Era Berzellai il Galaadita vecchio assai, cioè ottuagenario, e aveva fornito alimenti al re, mentre dimorava negli accampamenti, poichè era uomo assai ricco.
33 Barzillai was a man of great age; he was eighty years old. He had kept the king in provisions duringhis stay at Mahanaim, being a very wealthy man.	33 Il re pertanto disse a Berzellai: «Vieni con me a Gerusalemme e vi riposerai tranquillo».
34 'Come with me', the king said to Barzil ai, 'and I will provide for you at my side in Jerusalem.'	34 Ma rispose Berzellai al re: «Quanti saranno oramai i giorni del viver mio, perchè salga col re a Gerusalemme?
35 Barzillai replied to the king, 'How many years have I left to live, for me to go up to Jerusalem with theking?	35 Io sono ottuagenario; possono i miei sensi essere in grado di discernere ciò che è dolce e ciò che è amaro? Oppure possono il cibo e la bevanda dilettare il tuo servo? O posso io ancora udire la voce dei cantori e delle cantanti? Perchè il tuo servo ti sarà egli di aggravio, o re mio signore?
36 I am now eighty years old; can I tel the good from the bad? Has your servant any taste for his foodand drink? Can I stil hear the voices of men and women singers? Why should your servant be a further burdento my lord the king?	36 Il tuo servo se ne verrà teco un po' oltre il Giordano. Ma io non ho bisogno di tal cambiamento.
37 Your servant will go a little way across the Jordan with the king; but why should the king reward meso generously for that?	37 Lascia, ti prego, ritornare il tuo servo a morirsene nella sua città per esservi seppellito nel sepolcro di mio padre e di mia madre. Ma ecco il tuo servo Camaam; venga egli con te, o re mio signore, e fa' a lui quello che ti parrà bene».
38 Please allow your servant to go home again, so that I can die in my own town near the grave of myfather and mother. But here is your servant Chimham; let him go with my lord the king; treat him as you thinkright.'	38 Allora il re gli disse: «Verrà meco Camaam ed io farò a lui tutto quello che a te piacerà e tutto ciò che domanderai da me l'otterrai».
39 The king said, 'Let Chimham come along with me then; I shall do whatever you wish for him, andanything you request I shal do for your sake.'	39 Dopo che tutto il popolo col re ebbe passato il Giordano, il re baciò Berzellai e lo benedisse, ed egli ritornò al suo paese,
40 The people then al crossed the Jordan, and the king, having crossed, kissed Barzil ai and blessedhim, and the latter went home.	40 mentre il re accompagnato da Camaam passò a Galgala. Tutto il popolo di Giuda e solo metà del popolo d'Israele era presente, [quando il re passò il Giordano];
41 The king went on to Gilgal and Chimham went with him. Al the people of Judah accompanied theking, and also half the people of Israel.	41 perciò tutti gli uomini d'Israele accorsi dal re, gli dissero: «Perchè i nostri fratelli della tribù di Giuda ti hanno rubato ed essi han fatto passare il Giordano a te e alla tua casa e a tutti gli uomini di Davide con lui?».
42 Al the men of Israel then came to the king. 'Why', they asked the king, 'have our brothers, the men ofJudah, carried you off and brought the king and his family across the Jordan, and al David's men with him?'	42 Risposero tutti gli uomini di Giuda agli uomini d'Israele: «Perchè il re appartiene a noi più da vicino. A che scopo adirarvi per un fatto simile? Abbiamo noi mangiato a spese del re o ci furono dati dei regali?».
43 Al the men of Judah retorted to the men of Israel, 'Because the king is more closely related to us.Why do you take offence at this? Have we been eating at the king's expense? Have we taken any position forourselves?'	43 E gli uomini d'Israele risposero agli uomini di Giuda e dissero: «Noi siamo dieci volte più di voi presso il re, e Davide appartiene più a noi che a voi; perchè ci avete usato lo sgarbo di non annunciarci prima affinchè anche noi riconducessimo il nostro re?». Ma gli uomini di Giuda risposero con troppa asprezza agli uomini d'Israele.
44 The men of Israel replied to the men of Judah, 'We have ten shares in the king and, what is more, weare your elder brothers, so why have you slighted us? Were we not the first to suggest bringing back our king?'The men of Judah's words were even more intemperate than those of the men of Israel.
