Genesis 19

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 When the two angels reached Sodom in the evening, Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom. As soon asLot saw them, he stood up to greet them, and bowed to the ground.	1 Ora i due angeli arrivarono a Sodoma sulla sera, mentre Lot stava seduto alla porta della città. Appena li vide, Lot si alzò, andò loro incontro, li adorò prostrato fino a terra
2 'My lords,' he said, 'please come down to your servant's house to stay the night and wash your feet.Then you can make an early start on your journey.' 'No,' they said, 'we shal spend the night in the square.'	2 e disse: « Vi scongiuro, signori, venite alla casa del vostro servo e pernottatevi, cosi vi laverete i piedi e domattina seguirete il vostro viaggio ». Ma essi risposero: « Grazie: passeremo la notte sulla piazza ».
3 But he pressed them so much that they went home with him and entered his house. He prepared ameal for them, baking unleavened bread, and they had supper.	3 Ma egli li costrinse ad andare a casa sua, ove, entrati che furono, fece loro un banchetto, facendo cocere dei pani senza lievito; ed essi mangiarono.
4 They had not gone to bed when the house was surrounded by the townspeople, the men of Sodomboth young and old, al the people without exception.	4 Non s'erano ancora coricati, che gli uomini della città, giovani e vecchi, tutto il popolo insieme, assediarono la casa,
5 Cal ing out to Lot they said, 'Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us sothat we can have intercourse with them.'	5 e, chiamato Lot, gli dissero: «Dove sono gli uomini che son venuti da te stanotte? Menaceli fuori che li vogliamo conoscere ».
6 Lot came out to them at the door and, having shut the door behind him,	6 E Lot, chiudendo dietro a sè la porta, uscì e disse loro:
7 said, 'Please, brothers, do not be wicked.	7 « Non vogliate, ve ne prego, o fratelli miei, non vogliate fare questo male!
8 Look, I have two daughters who are virgins. I am ready to send them out to you, for you to treat asyou please, but do nothing to these men since they are now under the protection of my roof.'	8 Ho due figliole ancora vergini, ve le condurrò fuori, perchè ne abusiate a vostro piacere e così non facciate alcun male a questi uomini, perchè son venuti all'ombra del mio tetto ».
9 But they retorted, 'Stand back! This fel ow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play thejudge. Now we shal treat you worse than them.' Then they forced Lot back and moved forward to break downthe door.	9 Quelli replicarono: « Fatti in là! » E aggiunsero: « Sei entrato qua come forestiero, e la pretendi a giudice? Ora faremo a te peggio che a quelli ». E si addossarono a Lot con tanta violenza che la porta era li per essere sfondata.
10 But the men reached out, pul ed Lot back into the house with them, and shut the door.	10 Ma quegli uomini allora stesero le mani, trassero Lot in casa e chiusero la porta,
11 And they dazzled those who were at the door of the house, one and al , with a blinding light, so thatthey could not find the doorway.	11 e resero ciechi quelli che eran di fuori, piccoli e grandi, sicché non potevano più trovare la porta.
12 The men said to Lot, 'Have you anyone else here? Your sons, your daughters and al your people inthe city, take them away,	12 Poi dissero a Lot: « Hai tu qui alcuno dei tuoi? Genero, o figlio, o figlia che sia, fai uscire tutti i tuoi da questa città;
13 for we are about to destroy this place, since the outcry to Yahweh against those in it has grown soloud that Yahweh has sent us to destroy it.'	13 perchè noi distruggeremo questo luogo essendone cresciuto il grido davanti al Signore, il quale ci ha mandati a sterminarli ».
14 So Lot went off and spoke to his future sons-in-law who were to marry his daughters. 'On your feet!'he said, 'Leave this place, for Yahweh is about to destroy the city.' But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.	14 Allora Lot uscì, parlò ai suoi generi che dovevan prendere le sue figlie e disse: «Levatevi, uscite da questo luogo, perchè il Signore sta per distruggere questa città ». E parve loro che dicesse per scherzo.
15 When dawn broke the angels urged Lot on, 'To your feet! Take your wife and your two daughterswho are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.'	15 Appena fattosi giorno, gli angeli sollecitavano Lot, dicendo: « Sbrigati, prendi tua moglie e le due figlie che hai, per non perire nel castigo di questa città ».
16 And as he hesitated, the men seized his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters --Yahweh being merciful to him -- and led him out and left him outside the city.	16 Ma siccome indugiava, presero per mano lui, la sua moglie e le sue figlie, perchè il Signore voleva risparmiarlo,
17 When they had brought him outside, he was told, 'Flee for your life. Do not look behind you or stopanywhere on the plain. Flee to the hil s or you wil be swept away.'	17 e lo menaron via, e lo misero fuori della città, ove gli dissero: « Salva la tua vita: non ti voltare indietro, non ti fermare nelle vicinanze, salvati al monte, per non perire».
18 'Oh no, my lord!' Lot said to them,	18 E Lot disse loro: «Di grazia, Signor mio,
19 'You have already been very good to your servant and shown me even greater love by saving mylife, but I cannot flee to the hil s, or disaster wil overtake me and I shall die.	19 giacchè il tuo servo ha trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, e mi hai mostrato la grandezza della tua bontà, salvandomi la vita, ed io non posso scampare al monte prima che il male mi sorprenda e mi faccia morire;
20 That town over there is near enough to flee to, and is small. Let me flee there-after al it is only asmal place -- and so survive.'	20 c'è una città vicina alla quale potrei fuggire. Guarda; è piccola cosa, ed io in essa potrei salvarmi. Non è vero che è piccina, e ivi sarà sicura la mia vita? »
21 He replied, 'I grant you this favour too, and wil not overthrow the town you speak of.	21 E il Signore gli disse: « Ecco, anche questa grazia ti concedo, e non distruggerò la città in favor della quale hai parlato.
22 Hurry, flee to that one, for I cannot do anything until you reach it.' That is why the town is namedZoar.	22 Affrettati dunque e salvati li, perchè io non potrò far nulla, finché tu non ci sia entrato ». Per questo a quella città fu dato il nome di Segor.
23 The sun rose over the horizon just as Lot was entering Zoar.	23 Il sole si levava sopra la terra, quando Lot entrò in Segor.
24 Then Yahweh rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire of his own sending.	24 Allora il Signore ce piovere su Sodoma e Gomorra zolfo Fuoco dal Signore, dal cielo,
25 He overthrew those cities and the whole plain, with al the people living in the cities and everythingthat grew there.	25 e distrusse quelle città con tutti i loro dintorni, con tutti gli abitanti delle città, con tutto quello che cresceva sul suolo.
26 But Lot's wife looked back, and was turned into a pil ar of salt.	26 Ma la moglie di Lot, essendosi voltata inetro, fu cangiata in una statua di sale.
27 Next morning, Abraham hurried to the place where he had stood before Yahweh,	27 Abramo, levatosi la mattina per unire nel luogo dove era stato prima col Signore,
28 and looking towards Sodom and Gomorrah and the whole area of the plain, he saw the smoke risingfrom the ground like smoke from a furnace.	28 guardando Sodoma, Gomorra e tutto il paese di quella regione, vide le faville che si alzavano dalla terra come fumo d'una fornace.
29 Thus it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he did not forget Abraham and herescued Lot from the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities where Lot was living.	29 Così Dio, quando distrusse le città di quella regione, ricordandosi di Abramo, liberò Lot dallo sterminio di quelle città in cui questi aveva dimorato.
30 After leaving Zoar Lot settled in the hill country with his two daughters, for he dared not stay at Zoar.He lived in a cave, he and his two daughters.	30 Or Lot avendo paura a stare in Ser, ne usci e si ritirò su un monte inmie alle sue figliole, e dimorò con loro, una caverna.
31 The elder said to the younger, 'Our father is an old man, and there is no one here to marry us in thenormal way of the world.	31 E la maggiore disse alla minore: « Nostro padre è vecchio, e sulla terra non c'è restato nessun uomo che possa accostarsi a noi, secondo l'uso di tutto il mondo.
32 Come on, let us ply our father with wine and sleep with him. In this way we can preserve the race byour father.'	32 Vieni, ubriachiamolo di vino e dormiamo con lui, affinchè posano serbare la discendenza del nostro padre ».
33 That night they made their father drunk, and the elder slept with her father though he was unaware ofher coming to bed or of her leaving.	33 Quella notte stessa dettero da bere del vino al loro padre, e andò la maggiore a dormir col padre, il quale non ne accorse, nè quando la figlia si pose a letto, nè quando si levò.
34 The next day the elder said to the younger, 'Last night, I was the one who slept with our father. Letus make him drunk again tonight, and you go and sleep with him. In this way we can preserve the race by ourfather.'	34 Il giorno dopo la maggiore disse alla minore: « Ecco, la notte passata ci dormii io col babbo; diamogli da bere del vino anche in questa notte, e ci dormirai tu con lui, per serbare la discendenza del nostro padre ».
35 They made their father drunk that night too, and the younger went and slept with him, though he wasunaware of her coming to bed or of her leaving.	35 Così anche quella notte dettero da bere del vino al padre loro, col quale andò a dormire la figlia minore. Ed esso neppure allora se ne accorse nè quando quella si pose a giacere, nè quando si levò.
36 Both Lot's daughters thus became pregnant by their father.	36 Così le due figlie di Lot rimasero incinte del loro padre.
37 The elder gave birth to a son whom she named Moab; and he is the ancestor of the Moabites of ourown times.	37 E la maggiore partorì un figlio al quale pose il nome di Moab. Questi è il padre dei Moabiti, che esistono fino ad oggi.
38 The younger also gave birth to a son whom she named Ben-Ammi; and he is the ancestor of theBene-Ammon of our own times.	38 Ed anche la minore partorì un figlio al quale pose il nome di Ammon, vale a dire: figlio del mio popolo. Questi è il padre degli Ammoniti, che esistono fino ad oggi.
