Genesis 19

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 When the two angels reached Sodom in the evening, Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom. As soon asLot saw them, he stood up to greet them, and bowed to the ground.	1 Quei due angeli arrivarono a Sòdoma sul far della sera, mentre Lot stava ancora seduto alla porta di Sòdoma. Non appena li ebbe visti, Lot andò loro incontro, si prostrò con la faccia a terra
2 'My lords,' he said, 'please come down to your servant's house to stay the night and wash your feet.Then you can make an early start on your journey.' 'No,' they said, 'we shal spend the night in the square.'	2 e disse: "Ascoltate, vi prego, miei signori, venite in casa del vostro servo; vi passerete la notte, vi laverete i piedi e poi, domattina per tempo, ve ne andrete per la vostra via". Quelli risposero: "No, ma passeremo la notte sulla piazza".
3 But he pressed them so much that they went home with him and entered his house. He prepared ameal for them, baking unleavened bread, and they had supper.	3 Allora egli insistette tanto presso di essi, che andarono da lui ed entrarono nella sua casa. Egli fece per loro un convito, cosse dei pani senza lievito e così mangiarono.
4 They had not gone to bed when the house was surrounded by the townspeople, the men of Sodomboth young and old, al the people without exception.	4 Prima che andassero a dormire, ecco che gli uomini della città di Sòdoma s'affollarono intorno alla casa, giovani e vecchi, tutto il popolo al completo,
5 Cal ing out to Lot they said, 'Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us sothat we can have intercourse with them.'	5 chiamarono Lot e gli dissero: "Dove sono quegli uomini che sono entrati da te questa notte? Portaceli fuori, perché vogliamo abusare di loro!".
6 Lot came out to them at the door and, having shut the door behind him,	6 Allora Lot uscì verso di loro sulla porta e, dopo aver chiuso il battente dietro di sé,
7 said, 'Please, brothers, do not be wicked.	7 disse: "No, fratelli miei, non fate del male!
8 Look, I have two daughters who are virgins. I am ready to send them out to you, for you to treat asyou please, but do nothing to these men since they are now under the protection of my roof.'	8 Sentite, io ho due figlie che non hanno ancora conosciuto uomo; lasciate che ve le porti fuori e fate loro quel che vi pare, purché a questi uomini voi non facciate niente, perché sono entrati all'ombra del mio tetto".
9 But they retorted, 'Stand back! This fel ow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play thejudge. Now we shal treat you worse than them.' Then they forced Lot back and moved forward to break downthe door.	9 Ma quelli risposero: "Tirati via!". E aggiunsero: "Costui è venuto qui come straniero e vuol fare da arbitro! Ora faremo a te peggio che a loro!". E spingendosi violentemente contro quell'uomo, cioè contro Lot, si avvicinarono per sfondare il battente.
10 But the men reached out, pul ed Lot back into the house with them, and shut the door.	10 Allora, dall'interno, gli uomini sporsero le mani, trassero in casa Lot e chiusero il battente;
11 And they dazzled those who were at the door of the house, one and al , with a blinding light, so thatthey could not find the doorway.	11 e quanto agli uomini che erano alla porta della casa, li percossero abbagliandoli, dal più piccolo al più grande, cosicché non riuscirono a trovar la porta.
12 The men said to Lot, 'Have you anyone else here? Your sons, your daughters and al your people inthe city, take them away,	12 Poi gli uomini dissero a Lot: "Chi hai ancora qui? Il genero, i tuoi figli e le tue figlie e tutti quelli che hai nella città, falli uscire da questo luogo,
13 for we are about to destroy this place, since the outcry to Yahweh against those in it has grown soloud that Yahweh has sent us to destroy it.'	13 perché noi stiamo per distruggere questo luogo. E' grande il grido al cospetto del Signore, e il Signore ci ha mandati per distruggerli".
14 So Lot went off and spoke to his future sons-in-law who were to marry his daughters. 'On your feet!'he said, 'Leave this place, for Yahweh is about to destroy the city.' But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.	14 Lot uscì a parlare ai suoi generi, fidanzati alle sue figliole, e disse: "Alzatevi, uscite da questo luogo, perché il Signore sta per distruggere la città!". Ma parve ai suoi generi ch'egli scherzasse.
15 When dawn broke the angels urged Lot on, 'To your feet! Take your wife and your two daughterswho are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.'	15 Quando apparve l'alba, gli angeli fecero premura a Lot, dicendo: "Su, prendi tua moglie e le tue due figliole qui presenti ed esci per non essere travolto nel castigo della città".
16 And as he hesitated, the men seized his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters --Yahweh being merciful to him -- and led him out and left him outside the city.	16 Lot indugiava, onde gli uomini presero per mano lui, sua moglie e le sue due figlie, per un atto di misericordia del Signore verso di lui, lo fecero uscire e lo condussero fuori della città.
17 When they had brought him outside, he was told, 'Flee for your life. Do not look behind you or stopanywhere on the plain. Flee to the hil s or you wil be swept away.'	17 Ora, quando li ebbero fatti uscire fuori, uno di essi disse: "Fuggi! Si tratta della tua vita! Non guardare indietro e non fermarti nell'ambito della valle; fuggi sulla montagna, per non essere travolto!".
18 'Oh no, my lord!' Lot said to them,	18 Ma Lot gli disse: "No, mio Signore!
19 'You have already been very good to your servant and shown me even greater love by saving mylife, but I cannot flee to the hil s, or disaster wil overtake me and I shall die.	19 Vedi, il tuo servo ha trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi e tu hai fatto ben grande la tua misericordia verso di me salvandomi la vita, ma io non riuscirò a fuggire sul monte, senza che la sciagura mi raggiunga e muoia.
20 That town over there is near enough to flee to, and is small. Let me flee there-after al it is only asmal place -- and so survive.'	20 Vedi questa città, è abbastanza vicina per potermi rifugiare colà, ed è una piccolezza! Lascia ch'io fugga colà -- non è una piccolezza? -- e così la mia vita sarà salva!".
21 He replied, 'I grant you this favour too, and wil not overthrow the town you speak of.	21 Gli rispose: "Ecco, io ti favorisco anche in questa cosa di non rovesciare la città della quale mi hai parlato.
22 Hurry, flee to that one, for I cannot do anything until you reach it.' That is why the town is namedZoar.	22 Presto, fuggi colà, perché io non posso far nulla finché tu non vi sia arrivato". Perciò il nome di quella città si chiamò Zoar.
23 The sun rose over the horizon just as Lot was entering Zoar.	23 Al momento in cui il sole sorgeva sulla terra, Lot arrivò a Zoar.
24 Then Yahweh rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire of his own sending.	24 Allora il Signore fece piovere sopra Sòdoma e sopra Gomorra zolfo e fuoco, proveniente dal Signore, dal cielo.
25 He overthrew those cities and the whole plain, with al the people living in the cities and everythingthat grew there.	25 Distrusse queste città e tutta la valle con tutti gli abitanti della città e la vegetazione del suolo.
26 But Lot's wife looked back, and was turned into a pil ar of salt.	26 Ora la moglie di Lot guardò indietro e divenne una colonna di sale.
27 Next morning, Abraham hurried to the place where he had stood before Yahweh,	27 Abramo andò di mattino presto dove si era fermato davanti al Signore,
28 and looking towards Sodom and Gomorrah and the whole area of the plain, he saw the smoke risingfrom the ground like smoke from a furnace.	28 per guardare dall'alto il panorama di Sòdoma e Gomorra e di tutta la terra del circondario e vide che saliva un fumo dal paese, come il fumo della fornace.
29 Thus it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he did not forget Abraham and herescued Lot from the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities where Lot was living.	29 Così avvenne che quando Dio distrusse le città della valle, si ricordò di Abramo e fece fuggire Lot di mezzo alla catastrofe, quando distrusse le città nelle quali Lot abitava.
30 After leaving Zoar Lot settled in the hill country with his two daughters, for he dared not stay at Zoar.He lived in a cave, he and his two daughters.	30 Poi Lot salì da Zoar e andò ad abitare sulla montagna, insieme con le due sue figlie, perché aveva timore di restare a Zoar, e si stabilì in una caverna, lui e le due sue figlie.
31 The elder said to the younger, 'Our father is an old man, and there is no one here to marry us in thenormal way of the world.	31 Or la maggiore disse alla minore: "Il nostro padre è vecchio e non c'è alcun uomo di questo territorio per unirsi a noi, secondo l'uso di tutta la terra.
32 Come on, let us ply our father with wine and sleep with him. In this way we can preserve the race byour father.'	32 Vieni, facciamo bere del vino a nostro padre e poi corichiamoci con lui, e così faremo sussistere una discendenza da nostro padre".
33 That night they made their father drunk, and the elder slept with her father though he was unaware ofher coming to bed or of her leaving.	33 Quella notte fecero bere del vino al loro padre, e la maggiore venne a coricarsi con suo padre; ma egli non se ne accorse né quando essa si coricò né quando essa si alzò.
34 The next day the elder said to the younger, 'Last night, I was the one who slept with our father. Letus make him drunk again tonight, and you go and sleep with him. In this way we can preserve the race by ourfather.'	34 All'indomani la maggiore disse alla minore: "Ecco che ieri mi coricai con nostro padre. Facciamogli bere del vino anche questa notte e va' tu a coricarti con lui, e così faremo sussistere una discendenza da nostro padre".
35 They made their father drunk that night too, and the younger went and slept with him, though he wasunaware of her coming to bed or of her leaving.	35 Anche quella notte fecero bere del vino al loro padre e la minore andò a coricarsi con lui; ma egli non se ne accorse né quando essa si coricò né quando essa si alzò.
36 Both Lot's daughters thus became pregnant by their father.	36 Così le due figliole di Lot concepirono dal padre loro.
37 The elder gave birth to a son whom she named Moab; and he is the ancestor of the Moabites of ourown times.	37 La maggiore partorì un figliolo e gli pose nome Moab dicendo: "E' da mio padre". Costui è il padre dei Moabiti d'oggigiorno.
38 The younger also gave birth to a son whom she named Ben-Ammi; and he is the ancestor of theBene-Ammon of our own times.	38 La minore partorì anch'essa un figlio e gli pose nome "Figlio del mio popolo". Costui è il padre degli Ammoniti d'oggigiorno.
