Genesis 18

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Yahweh appeared to him at the Oak of Mamre while he was sitting by the entrance of the tent duringthe hottest part of the day.	1 Poi il Signore apparve a lui alle Querce di Mamre, mentr'egli sedeva all'ingresso della tenda, nell'ora più calda del giorno.
2 He looked up, and there he saw three men standing near him. As soon as he saw them he ran fromthe entrance of the tent to greet them, and bowed to the ground.	2 Egli alzò gli occhi ed ecco: tre uomini stavano in piedi presso di lui. Appena li vide, corse loro incontro dall'ingresso della tenda e si prostrò fino a terra,
3 'My lord,' he said, 'if I find favour with you, please do not pass your servant by.	3 dicendo: "Mio signore, ti prego, se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, non passar oltre senza fermarti dal tuo servo.
4 Let me have a little water brought, and you can wash your feet and have a rest under the tree.	4 Lasciate che vi faccia portare un po' d'acqua per lavarvi i piedi e stendetevi sotto l'albero.
5 Let me fetch a little bread and you can refresh yourselves before going further, now that you havecome in your servant's direction.' They replied, 'Do as you say.'	5 Permettete che vada a prendere un boccone di pane e ristoratevi il cuore, e dopo potrete proseguire, perché è per questo che voi siete passati dal vostro servo". Quelli risposero: "Fa' pure così come hai detto".
6 Abraham hurried to the tent and said to Sarah, 'Quick, knead three measures of best flour and makeloaves.'	6 Allora Abramo si affrettò nella tenda, da Sara, e disse: "Presto, prendi tre staia di fior di farina, impastala e fanne delle focacce!".
7 Then, running to the herd, Abraham took a fine and tender calf and gave it to the servant, who hurriedto prepare it.	7 All'armento corse egli stesso, Abramo, prese un vitello, tenero e gustoso, lo diede al servo, il quale si affrettò a prepararlo.
8 Then taking curds, milk and the calf which had been prepared, he laid al before them, and they atewhile he remained standing near them under the tree.	8 Prese una bevanda di latte acido e latte fresco, insieme col vitello che aveva preparato, e li depose davanti a loro; e così, mentr'egli stava in piedi presso di loro, sotto l'albero, quelli mangiarono.
9 'Where is your wife Sarah?' they asked him. 'She is in the tent,' he replied.	9 Poi gli dissero: "Dov'è Sara, tua moglie?". Rispose: "Eccola, nella tenda!".
10 Then his guest said, 'I shal come back to you next year, and then your wife Sarah will have a son.'Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent behind him.	10 Riprese: "Tornerò di sicuro da te, fra un anno, e allora Sara, tua moglie, avrà un figliolo". Intanto Sara stava ad ascoltare all'ingresso della tenda, rimanendo dietro di essa. (
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, wel on in years, and Sarah had ceased to have her monthlyperiods.	11 Or Abramo e Sara erano vecchi, avanzati negli anni; era cessato di avvenire a Sara ciò che avviene regolarmente alle donne).
12 So Sarah laughed to herself, thinking, 'Now that I am past the age of childbearing, and my husbandis an old man, is pleasure to come my way again?'	12 Allora Sara rise dentro di sé, dicendo: "Proprio adesso che son vecchia, dovrò provar piacere; anche il mio signore è vecchio!".
13 But Yahweh asked Abraham, 'Why did Sarah laugh and say, "Am I real y going to have a child nowthat I am old?"	13 Ma il Signore disse ad Abramo: "Perché mai ha riso Sara dicendo: "Davvero dovrò partorire, vecchia come sono?".
14 Nothing is impossible for Yahweh. I shal come back to you at the same time next year and Sarahwil have a son.'	14 C'è forse qualche cosa che sia impossibile per il Signore? Al tempo fissato, ritornerò da te, fra un anno, e Sara avrà un figlio!".
15 Sarah said, 'I did not laugh,' lying because she was afraid. But he replied, 'Oh yes, you did laugh.'	15 Allora Sara negò dicendo: "Non ho riso!", perché ebbe paura; ma quello rispose: "Hai proprio riso!".
16 From there the men set out and arrived within sight of Sodom, with Abraham accompanying them tospeed them on their way.	16 Poi quegli uomini si alzarono di là e andarono a contemplare dall'alto il panorama di Sòdoma, mentre Abramo si accompagnava con loro per accomiatarli.
17 Now Yahweh had wondered, 'Shall I conceal from Abraham what I am going to do,	17 Il Signore rifletteva: "Forse io celerò ad Abramo quello che sto per fare,
18 as Abraham wil become a great and powerful nation and al nations on earth wil bless themselvesby him?	18 mentre Abramo diventerà certamente una nazione grande e potente, e in lui si diranno benedette tutte le nazioni della terra?
19 For I have singled him out to command his sons and his family after him to keep the way of Yahwehby doing what is upright and just, so that Yahweh can carry out for Abraham what he has promised him.'	19 Infatti l'ho scelto, perché comandi ai suoi figli e al suo casato dopo di lui di osservare la via del Signore, operando ciò che è giustizia e diritto, in modo che il Signore possa attuare su Abramo quanto gli ha promesso".
20 Then Yahweh said, 'The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin is so grave,	20 Disse allora il Signore: "C'è il grido di Sòdoma e Gomorra che è troppo grande, e c'è il loro peccato che è molto grave!
21 that I shal go down and see whether or not their actions are at all as the outcry reaching me wouldsuggest. Then I shal know.'	21 Voglio scendere a vedere se proprio hanno fatto il male di cui mi è giunto il grido, oppure no; lo voglio sapere!".
22 While the men left there and went to Sodom, Yahweh remained in Abraham's presence.	22 Poi quegli uomini partirono di lì e andarono verso Sòdoma, ma il Signore stava tuttora davanti ad Abramo.
23 Abraham stepped forward and said, 'Wil you really destroy the upright with the guilty?	23 Allora Abramo gli si avvicinò e gli disse: "Davvero stai per sopprimere il giusto con l'empio?
24 Suppose there are fifty upright people in the city. Wil you really destroy it? Wil you not spare theplace for the sake of the fifty upright in it?	24 Forse vi sono cinquanta giusti entro la città; davvero li vuoi sopprimere e non perdonerai a quel luogo in grazia dei cinquanta giusti che vi si trovano in mezzo?
25 Do not think of doing such a thing: to put the upright to death with the guilty, so that upright and guiltyfare alike! Is the judge of the whole world not to act justly?'	25 Lungi da te il fare tale cosa! Far morire il giusto con l'empio, cosicché il giusto e l'empio abbiano la stessa sorte; lungi da te! Forse che il giudice di tutta la terra non farà giustizia?".
26 Yahweh replied, 'If I find fifty upright people in the city of Sodom, I wil spare the whole placebecause of them.'	26 Rispose il Signore: "Se a Sòdoma, in mezzo alla città, io trovo cinquanta giusti, perdonerò a tutta la regione per causa loro!".
27 Abraham spoke up and said, 'It is presumptuous of me to speak to the Lord, I who am dust andashes:	27 Riprese Abramo e disse: "Ecco che ricomincio a parlare al mio Signore io che sono polvere e cenere...
28 Suppose the fifty upright were five short? Would you destroy the whole city because of five?' 'No,' hereplied, 'I shal not destroy it if I find forty-five there.'	28 Forse ai cinquanta giusti ne mancheranno cinque. In rapporto di questi cinque distruggerai tutta la città?". Rispose: "Non la distruggerò, se ve ne trovo quarantacinque".
29 Abraham persisted and said, 'Suppose there are forty to be found there?' 'I shal not do it,' he replied,'for the sake of the forty.'	29 Ancora l'altro riprese a parlare a lui e disse: "Forse là se ne troveranno quaranta...". Rispose: "Non lo farò, per causa di quei quaranta".
30 Abraham said, 'I hope the Lord wil not be angry if I go on: Suppose there are only thirty to be foundthere?' 'I shall not do it,' he replied, 'if I find thirty there.'	30 Riprese: "Di grazia, che il mio Signore non voglia irritarsi e io parlerò ancora: forse là se ne troveranno trenta...". Rispose: "Non lo farò, se ve ne troverò trenta".
31 He said, 'It is presumptuous of me to speak to the Lord: Suppose there are only twenty there?' 'I shallnot destroy it,' he replied, 'for the sake of the twenty.'	31 Riprese: "Vedi come ardisco parlare al mio Signore! Forse là se ne troveranno venti...". Rispose: "Non la distruggerò, per causa di quei venti".
32 He said, 'I trust my Lord wil not be angry if I speak once more: perhaps there wil only be ten.' 'I shalnot destroy it,' he replied, 'for the sake of the ten.'	32 Riprese: "Non si adiri, di grazia, il mio Signore, e lascia ch'io parli ancora una volta sola; forse là se ne troveranno dieci". Rispose: "Non la distruggerò per causa di quei dieci".
33 When he had finished talking to Abraham Yahweh went away, and Abraham returned home.	33 Poi il Signore, com'ebbe finito di parlare con Abramo, se ne andò, e Abramo ritornò alla sua residenza.
