NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
The whole world spoke the same language, with the same vocabulary.1 Erat autem terra labii unius, et sermonum eorumdem.
Now, as people moved eastwards they found a valley in the land of Shinar where they settled.2 Cumque proficiscerentur de oriente, invenerunt campum in terra Sennaar, et habitaverunt in eo.
They said to one another, 'Come, let us make bricks and bake them in the fire.' For stone they usedbricks, and for mortar they used bitumen.3 Dixitque alter ad proximum suum : Venite, faciamus lateres, et coquamus eos igni. Habueruntque lateres pro saxis, et bitumen pro cæmento :
'Come,' they said, 'let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top reaching heaven. Let us makea name for ourselves, so that we do not get scattered all over the world.'4 et dixerunt : Venite, faciamus nobis civitatem et turrim, cujus culmen pertingat ad cælum : et celebremus nomen nostrum antequam dividamur in universas terras.
Now Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower that the people had built.5 Descendit autem Dominus ut videret civitatem et turrim, quam ædificabant filii Adam,
'So they are al a single people with a single language!' said Yahweh. 'This is only the start of theirundertakings! Now nothing they plan to do wil be beyond them.6 et dixit : Ecce, unus est populus, et unum labium omnibus : c?peruntque hoc facere, nec desistent a cogitationibus suis, donec eas opere compleant.
Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they cannot understand one another.'7 Venite igitur, descendamus, et confundamus ibi linguam eorum, ut non audiat unusquisque vocem proximi sui.
Yahweh scattered them thence all over the world, and they stopped building the city.8 Atque ita divisit eos Dominus ex illo loco in universas terras, et cessaverunt ædificare civitatem.
That is why it was cal ed Babel, since there Yahweh confused the language of the whole world, andfrom there Yahweh scattered them al over the world.9 Et idcirco vocatum est nomen ejus Babel, quia ibi confusum est labium universæ terræ : et inde dispersit eos Dominus super faciem cunctarum regionum.
These are Shem's descendants: When Shem was a hundred years old he fathered Arpachshad, twoyears after the flood.10 Hæ sunt generationes Sem : Sem erat centum annorum quando genuit Arphaxad, biennio post diluvium.

Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in his native land, Ur of the Chaldaeans.28 Mortuusque est Aran ante Thare patrem suum, in terra nativitatis suæ, in Ur Chaldæorum.
