1 The Philistines rallied their forces for battle at Socoh in Judah and camped between Socoh and Azekah at Ephes-dammim.	1 Os Filisteus, juntando as suas tropas para combater (contra Israel), reuniram-se em Soco de Judá. Acamparam entre Soco e Azeca, nos confins de Efes-Dammin.
2 Saul and the Israelites also gathered and camped in the Vale of the Terebinth, drawing up their battle line to meet the Philistines.	2 Saul e os filhos de Israel reuniram-se (também), foram para o vale do Terebinto e formaram o exército em batalha para combater contra os Filisteus.
3 The Philistines were stationed on one hill and the Israelites on an opposite hill, with a valley between them.	3 Os Filisteus estavam dum lado sobre um monte, e Israel estava do outro lado sobre (outro) monte. Havia um vale entre eles.
4 A champion named Goliath of Gath came out from the Philistine camp; he was six and a half feet tall.	4 Saiu do campo dos Filisteus um desafiador, chamado Golias, de Get, que tinha seis côvados e um palmo de altura.
5 He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a bronze corselet of scale armor weighing five thousand shekels,	5 Trazia na cabeça um capacete de bronze e estava vestido duma couraça escameada; o peso da couraça era de cinco mil siclos de bronze.

8 He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel: "Why come out in battle formation? I am a Philistine, and you are Saul's servants. Choose one of your men, and have him come down to me.	8 Posto em pé, clamava para os esquadrões de Israel, dizendo-lhes: Por que viestes dispostos para a batalha? Porventura não sou eu um Filisteu, e vós os escravos de Saul? Escolhei entre vós um homem, que venha bater-se (comigo) só por só.
9 If he beats me in combat and kills me, we will be your vassals; but if I beat him and kill him, you shall be our vassals and serve us."	9 Se ele puder combater comigo e me tirar a vida, nós seremos vossos escravos; mas se eu prevalecer e o matar, vós sereis nossos escravos, servir-nos-eis.
10 The Philistine continued: "I defy the ranks of Israel today. Give me a man and let us fight together."	10 O Filisteu acrescentou: Eu hoje desafiei os esquadrões de Israel, dizendo: Dai-me um homem, que saia a bater-se comigo, só por só.
11 Saul and all the men of Israel, when they heard this challenge of the Philistine, were dismayed and terror-stricken.	11 Saul e todos os Israelitas, ouvindo estas palavras do Filisteu, estavam atônitos e temiam em extremo.
12 (David was the son of an Ephrathite named Jesse, who was from Bethlehem in Judah. He had eight sons, and in the days of Saul was old and well on in years.	12 Ora Davide era filho daquele homem Efrateu, de Belém de Judá, do qual acima falamos, chamado Isaí, que tinha oito filhos, e era um dos mais velhos, dos mais idosos, do tempo de Saul.
13 The three oldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to war; these three sons who had gone off to war were named, the first-born Eliab, the second son Abinadab, and the third Shammah.	13 Os seus três filhos maiores tinham seguido Saul para a guerra; os nomes dos seus três filhos que tinham ido à guerra (eram) Ellab, o primogênito, Abinadab, o segundo, e Sama o terceiro.

16 (Meanwhile the Philistine came forward and took his stand morning and evening for forty days.	16 O Filisteu apresentava-se de manhã e de tarde, e continuou assim durante quarenta dias.
17 (Now Jesse said to his son David: "Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves for your brothers, and bring them quickly to your brothers in the camp.	17 Isaí disse a seu filho Davide: Toma para teus irmãos um efi de grão torrado e estes dez pães, e corre (a levá-los) a teus irmãos, ao acampamento;
18 Also take these ten cheeses for the field officer. Greet your brothers and bring home some token from them.	18 levarás também estes dez queijos ao chefe do seu milhar; visitarás os teus irmãos, para ver se estão bem, e informa- te em que companhia servem.
19 Saul, and they, and all Israel are fighting against the Philistines in the Vale of the Terebinth."	19 Saul e eles, e todos os filhos de Israel, combatiam contra os Filisteus no vale de Terebinto.
20 Early the next morning, having left the flock with a shepherd, David set out on his errand, as Jesse had commanded him. He reached the barricade of the camp just as the army, on their way to the battleground, were shouting their battle cry.	20 Davide levantou-se de manhã, confiou o rebanho a um guarda, e, carregado, pôs-se a caminho, como Isaí lhe tinha mandado. Chegou ao acampamento, quando o exército, tendo saído a dar batalha, gritava em sinal de combate.
21 The Israelites and the Philistines drew up opposite each other in battle array.	21 Israel tinha posto em ordem as suas tropas, mas também os Filisteus do outro lado se tinham preparado para os atacar.
22 David entrusted what he had brought to the keeper of the baggage and hastened to the battle line, where he greeted his brothers.	22 Davide, deixando as bagagens, que tinha levado, entregues ao cuidado do guarda das bagagens, correu ao lugar da batalha e Informava-se se tudo corria bem aos seus Irmãos.
23 While he was talking with them, the Philistine champion, by name Goliath of Gath, came up from the ranks of the Philistines and spoke as before, and David listened.	23 Quando ele lhes estava ainda falando, apareceu aquele desafiador, chamado Golias, Filisteu, de Get, vindo do campo dos Filisteus, a dizer as mesmas palavras (do costume), que Davide ouviu.
24 When the Israelites saw the man, they all retreated before him, very much afraid.	24 Todos os Israelitas, tendo visto este homem, fugiram da sua presença, porque o temiam muito.
25 The Israelites had been saying: "Do you see this man coming up? He comes up to insult Israel. If anyone should kill him, the king would give him great wealth, and his daughter as well, and would grant exemption to his father's family in Israel."	25 Um dos (soldados) de Israel disse: Não vistes esse homem, que avançou (para combater)? Ele veio para desafiar Israel. Ao homem que o matar, o rei encherá de grandes riquezas, dar-lhe-á por mulher sua filha e isentará a casa de seu pai de tributos de Israel.
26 David now said to the men standing by: "What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and frees Israel of the disgrace? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine in any case, that he should insult the armies of the living God?"	26 Davide falou aos que estavam junto dele, dizendo: Que será dado a quem matar este Filisteu e tirar o opróbrio de Israel? Quem é este Filisteu incircuncidado, que insultou o exército do Deus vivo?
27 They repeated the same words to him and said, "That is how the man who kills him will be rewarded."	27 O povo repetia-lhe as mesmas palavras, dizendo; Dar-se-á isto e isto a quem o matar.
28 When Eliab, his oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he grew angry with David and said: "Why did you come down? With whom have you left those sheep in the desert meanwhile? I know your arrogance and your evil intent. You came down to enjoy the battle!"	28 Enquanto ele falava assim com os outros, Eliab, seu irmão mais velho, irou-se contra ele e disse: Por que vieste cá e deixaste no deserto essas poucas ovelhas? Eu conheço a tua soberba e a maldade do teu coração; tu vieste para ver o combate.
29 David replied, "What have I done now?--I was only talking."	29 Davide disse: Que fiz eu? Não é porventura uma (simples) palavra (que pronunciei)?
30 Yet he turned from him to another and asked the same question; and everyone gave him the same answer as before.	30 E apartou-se um pouco dele, para (se dirigir) a um outro, e disse a mesma coisa. O povo respondeu-lhe como da primeira vez.
31 The words that David had spoken were overheard and reported to Saul, who sent for him.)	31 Foram ouvidas as palavras que Davide disse e foram referidas a Saul.
32 Then David spoke to Saul: "Let your majesty not lose courage. I am at your service to go and fight this Philistine."	32 Tendo sido conduzido Davide perante ele, disse-lhe: Não desfaleça o coração de ninguém por causa deste Filisteu! Eu, teu servo, irei e combaterei contra ele.
33 But Saul answered David, "You cannot go up against this Philistine and fight with him, for you are only a youth, while he has been a warrior from his youth."	33 Saul disse a Davide; Tu não poderás resistir a este Filisteu, nem combater contra ele, porque és um rapaz, e ele é um homem guerreiro desde a sua mocidade.
34 Then David told Saul: "Your servant used to tend his father's sheep, and whenever a lion or bear came to carry off a sheep from the flock,	34 Davide disse a Saul: Quando teu servo apascentava o rebanho de seu pai, e vinha um leão ou um urso, que levava um carneiro do meio do rebanho,
35 I would go after it and attack it and rescue the prey from its mouth. If it attacked me, I would seize it by the jaw, strike it, and kill it.	35 eu corria atrás deles, feria-os e arrancava-lhes (a presa) da guela; se eles se levantavam contra mim, eu agarrava-os pela guela e os estrangulava e matava.
36 Your servant has killed both a lion and a bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine will be as one of them, because he has insulted the armies of the living God."	36 Foi assim que eu, teu servo, matei um leão e um urso: a este Filisteu incircuncidado sucederá como a um deles. Agora irei e tirarei o opróbrio do povo; pois quem é este Filisteu incircuncidado, que se atreveu a amaldiçoar o exército do Deus vivo?
37 David continued: "The LORD, who delivered me from the claws of the lion and the bear, will also keep me safe from the clutches of this Philistine." Saul answered David, "Go! the LORD will be with you."	37 Davide acrescentou: O Senhor, que me livrou das garras do leão e das do urso, livrar-me-á também da mão deste Filisteu. Saul disse a Davide: Vai, e o Senhor seja contigo.
38 Then Saul clothed David in his own tunic, putting a bronze helmet on his head and arming him with a coat of mail.	38 Saul revestiu Davide das suas armas, pôs sobre a sua cabeça um elmo de bronze e armou-o de uma couraça.
39 David also girded himself with Saul's sword over the tunic. He walked with difficulty, however, since he had never tried armor before. He said to Saul, "I cannot go in these, because I have never tried them before." So he took them off.	39 Cingido Davide com a espada de Saul sobre a sua armadura, começou a experimentar se poderia andar com ela, pois nunca tinha usado nenhuma. Davide disse a Saul: Eu não posso caminhar assim, porque não estou acostumado. E depôs as armas,
40 Then, staff in hand, David selected five smooth stones from the wadi and put them in the pocket of his shepherd's bag. With his sling also ready to hand, he approached the Philistine.	40 tomou o seu cajado, que trazia sempre na mão, escolheu na torrente cinco pedras bem lisas, meteu-as no surrão de pastor, que trazia consigo, tomou a funda na mão e saiu contra o Filisteu.
41 With his shield-bearer marching before him, the Philistine also advanced closer and closer to David.	41 O Filisteu ia andando e aproximando-se de Davide, e o seu escudeiro ia diante dele.
42 When he had sized David up, and seen that he was youthful, and ruddy, and handsome in appearance, he held him in contempt.	42 Quando o Filisteu olhou e viu Davide, desprezou-o, porque era muito novo, loiro, de aspecto gentil.
43 The Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog that you come against me with a staff?" Then the Philistine cursed David by his gods	43 O Filisteu disse a Davide: Porventura eu sou algum cão, para vires contra mim com um pau? — O Filisteu amaldiçoou Davide, pelos seus deuses,
44 and said to him, "Come here to me, and I will leave your flesh for the birds of the air and the beasts of the field."	44 e disse a Davide: Vem a mim, e eu lançarei as tuas carnes às aves do céu e aos animais da terra.
45 David answered him: "You come against me with sword and spear and scimitar, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel that you have insulted.	45 Davide disse ao Filisteu: Tu vens a mim com espada, lança e escudo, eu porém venho a ti em nome do Senhor dos Exércitos, do Deus das tropas de Israel, as quais tu insultaste hoje;
46 Today the LORD shall deliver you into my hand; I will strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will leave your corpse and the corpses of the Philistine army for the birds of the air and the beasts of the field; thus the whole land shall learn that Israel has a God.	46 o Senhor te entregará nas minhas mãos, eu te ferirei, cortar-te-ei a cabeça e darei hoje às aves do céu e aos animais da terra os cadáveres do acampamento dos Filisteus, a fim de que toda a terra saiba que há um Deus em Israel;
47 All this multitude, too, shall learn that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves. For the battle is the LORD'S, and he shall deliver you into our hands."	47 toda esta multidão conhecerá que o Senhor não salva pela espada, nem pela lança, porque ele é o Senhor da guerra e vos entregará nas nossas mãos.
48 The Philistine then moved to meet David at close quarters, while David ran quickly toward the battle line in the direction of the Philistine.	48 O Filisteu levantou-se, pôs-se em marcha e avançou para Davide. Davide lançou-se a correr, em frente do exército, ao encontro do Filisteu.
49 David put his hand into the bag and took out a stone, hurled it with the sling, and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone embedded itself in his brow, and he fell prostrate on the ground.	49 Meteu a sua mão no surrão, tirou uma pedra, arrojou-a com a funda, dando-lhe volta, e feriu o Filisteu na testa; a pedra cravou-se na sua testa, e ele caiu com o rosto por terra.
50 (Thus David overcame the Philistine with sling and stone; he struck the Philistine mortally, and did it without a sword.)	50 Assim venceu Davide o Filisteu com a funda e com a pedra, e, depois de o ferir, o matou. Davide, não tendo à mão nenhuma espada,
51 Then David ran and stood over him; with the Philistine's own sword (which he drew from its sheath) he dispatched him and cut off his head.When they saw that their hero was dead, the Philistines took to flight.	51 correu e lançou-se sobre o Filisteu, pegou da sua espada, tirou-a da bainha, matou-o e cortou-lhe a cabeça. Os Filisteus, vendo que o mais valente deles estava morto, fugiram.
52 Then the men of Israel and Judah, with loud shouts, went in pursuit of the Philistines to the approaches of Gath and to the gates of Ekron, and Philistines fell wounded along the road from Shaaraim as far as Gath and Ekron.	52 Os homens de Israel e os de Judá, levantando-se com grande grito, perseguiram os Filisteus até chegarem ao vale e às portas de Acaron, caindo feridos muitos dos Filisteus pelo caminho de Saraim , até Get e até Acaron.
53 On their return from the pursuit of the Philistines, the Israelites looted their camp.	53 Voltando os filhos de Israel, depois de terem perseguido os Filisteus, saquearam o seu acampamento.
54 David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem; but he kept Goliath's armor in his own tent.	54 Davide, tomando a cabeça do Filisteu , levou-a a Jerusalém e pôs as armas dele na sua tenda.
55 (When Saul saw David go out to meet the Philistine, he asked his general Abner, "Abner, whose son is that youth?" Abner replied, "As truly as your majesty is alive, I have no idea."	55 No momento em que Saul viu partir Davide contra o Filisteu, disse para Abner, general do exército: Abner, de que família descende este jovem? Abner disse-lhe: Juro pela tua vida, ó rei, que o ignoro.
56 And the king said, "Find out whose son the lad is."	56 E disse o rei: pergunta lá de quem é filho este jovem ?
57 So when David returned from slaying the Philistine, Abner took him and presented him to Saul. David was still holding the Philistine's head.	57 Tendo voltado Davide, depois de morto o Filisteu, Abner tomou-o e levou-o à presença de Saul. Davide tinha a cabeça do Filisteu na mão.
58 Saul then asked him, "Whose son are you, young man?" David replied, "I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem."	58 Saul disse-lhe: De que família és tu, ó jovem? Davide respondeu: Eu sou filho do teu servo Isaí de Belém.
