1 After Abimelech there rose to save Israel the Issacharite Tola, son of Puah, son of Dodo, a resident of Shamir in the mountain region of Ephraim.	1 Dopo Abimèlech sorse a salvare Israele Tola, figlio di Pua, figlio di Dodo, della tribù di Issacar. Egli abitava a Samir, sulla montagna di Efraim.
2 When he had judged Israel twenty-three years, he died and was buried in Shamir.	2 Egli giudicò Israele per ventitré anni; poi morì e fu sepolto a Samir.
3 Jair the Gileadite came after him and judged Israel twenty-two years.	3 Dopo di lui sorse il galaadita Iair, il quale giudicò Israele per ventidue anni.
4 He had thirty sons who rode on thirty saddle-asses and possessed thirty cities in the land of Gilead; these are called Havvoth-jair to the present day.	4 Aveva trenta figli che cavalcavano su trenta asini e governavano altrettante città nella regione del Gàlaad, dette i "villaggi di Iair", nome che conservano ancora.

6 The Israelites again offended the LORD, serving the Baals and Ashtaroths, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. Since they had abandoned the LORD and would not serve him,	6 Gli Israeliti ripresero a compiere ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, prestando culto ai Baal, alle Astarti, agli dèi di Aram, agli dèi di Sidone, agli dèi di Moab, agli dèi degli Ammoniti e agli dèi dei Filistei. Abbandonarono il Signore e non lo adoravano più.
7 the LORD became angry with Israel and allowed them to fall into the power of (the Philistines and) the Ammonites.	7 Esplose allora contro Israele l'ira del Signore, il quale consegnò gli Israeliti nelle mani dei Filistei e degli Ammoniti.
8 For eighteen years they afflicted and oppressed the Israelites in Bashan, and all the Israelites in the Amorite land beyond the Jordan in Gilead.	8 Quell'anno Filistei e Ammoniti iniziarono una spietata oppressione degli Israeliti che durò diciotto anni: ne furono colpiti tutti gli Israeliti che abitavano al di là del Giordano, nella regione amorrita del Gàlaad.
9 The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was in great distress.	9 Gli Ammoniti passarono poi il Giordano per portar guerra anche alle tribù di Giuda, di Beniamino e di Efraim, cosicché l'oppressione di Israele era grande.
10 Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, "We have sinned against you; we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals."	10 Allora gli Israeliti gridarono al Signore: "Abbiamo peccato contro di te, perché abbiamo abbandonato il nostro Dio per prestare il nostro culto ai Baal".
11 The LORD answered the Israelites: "Did not the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,	11 Ma Dio rispose così agli Israeliti: "Quando gli Egiziani, gli Amorrei, gli Ammoniti, i Filistei,
12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites, and the Midianites oppress you? Yet when you cried out to me, and I saved you from their grasp,	12 i Sidoni, gli Amaleciti, i Cananei vi opprimevano, e voi alzavate il vostro grido a me, io vi ho salvato dalle loro mani.
13 you still forsook me and worshiped other gods. Therefore I will save you no more.	13 Ma nonostante questo, voi mi avete abbandonato per servire altri dèi. Per questo non voglio più salvarvi!
14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen; let them save you now that you are in distress."	14 Andatevene piuttosto a implorare l'aiuto degli dèi che vi siete scelti. Penseranno loro a salvarvi nel tempo della vostra oppressione".
15 But the Israelites said to the LORD, "We have sinned. Do to us whatever you please. Only save us this day."	15 Ripresero gli Israeliti: "Abbiamo peccato: fa' tu di noi tutto quello che vuoi; ma oggi liberaci, ti imploriamo!".
16 And they cast out the foreign gods from their midst and served the LORD, so that he grieved over the misery of Israel.	16 Gli Israeliti allora eliminarono di mezzo a loro gli dèi stranieri e tornarono ad adorare il Signore, il cui animo non poté più resistere alle sofferenze d'Israele.
17 The Ammonites had gathered for war and encamped in Gilead, while the Israelites assembled and encamped in Mizpah.	17 Radunatisi, gli Ammoniti avevano posto il campo nel Gàlaad. Anche gli Israeliti si radunarono per andare ad accamparsi in Mizpa.
18 And among the people the princes of Gilead said to one another, "The one who begins the war against the Ammonites shall be leader of all the inhabitants of Gilead."	18 Intanto il popolo e i capi galaaditi cercavano chi sarebbe stato l'uomo che avrebbe intrapreso la guerra contro gli Ammoniti: sarebbe stato lui il capo di tutti i Galaaditi.
