Those who are under the yoke of slavery must regard their masters as worthy of full respect, so that the name of God and our teaching may not suffer abuse.1 Whoever are servants under the yoke, let them consider their masters to be worthy of every honor, lest the name and doctrine of the Lord be blasphemed.
Those whose masters are believers must not take advantage of them because they are brothers but must give better service because those who will profit from their work are believers and are beloved.2 But those who have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brothers, but rather serve them all the more because they are believing and beloved, participants of the same service. Teach and exhort these things.
Whoever teaches something different and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the religious teaching3 If anyone teaches otherwise, and does not consent to the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to that doctrine which is in accord with piety,
is conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid disposition for arguments and verbal disputes. From these come envy, rivalry, insults, evil suspicions,4 then he is arrogant, knowing nothing, yet languishing amid the questions and quarrels of words. From these arise envy, contention, blasphemy, evil suspicions:
and mutual friction among people with corrupted minds, who are deprived of the truth, supposing religion to be a means of gain.5 the conflicts of men who have been corrupted in mind and deprived of truth, who consider profit to be piety.
Indeed, religion with contentment is a great gain.6 But piety with sufficiency is great gain.
For we brought nothing into the world, just as we shall not be able to take anything out of it.7 For we brought nothing into this world, and there is no doubt that we can take nothing away.
If we have food and clothing, we shall be content with that.8 But, having nourishment and some kind of covering, we should be content with these.
Those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and into a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge them into ruin and destruction.9 For those who want to become rich fall into temptation and into the snare of the devil and into many useless and harmful desires, which submerge men in destruction and in perdition.
For the love of money is the root of all evils, and some people in their desire for it have strayed from the faith and have pierced themselves with many pains.10 For desire is the root of all evils. Some persons, hungering in this way, have strayed from the faith and have entangled themselves in many sorrows.
But you, man of God, avoid all this. Instead, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.11 But you, O man of God, flee from these things, and truly pursue justice, piety, faith, charity, patience, meekness.
Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses.12 Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you have been called, and make a good profession of faith in the sight of many witnesses.
I charge (you) before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate for the noble confession,13 I charge you, in the sight of God, who enlivens all things, and in the sight of Christ Jesus, who gave the testimony of a good profession under Pontius Pilate,
to keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ14 to observe the commandment, immaculately, irreproachably, unto the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
that the blessed and only ruler will make manifest at the proper time, the King of kings and Lord of lords,15 For at the proper time, he shall reveal the blessed and only Power, the King of kings and the Lord of lords,
who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, and whom no human being has seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal power. Amen.16 who alone holds immortality, and who inhabits the inaccessible light, whom no man has seen, nor even is able to see, to whom is honor and everlasting dominion. Amen.
Tell the rich in the present age not to be proud and not to rely on so uncertain a thing as wealth but rather on God, who richly provides us with all things for our enjoyment.17 Instruct the wealthy of this age not to have a superior attitude, nor to hope in the uncertainty of riches, but in the living God, who offers us everything in abundance to enjoy,
Tell them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous, ready to share,18 and to do good, to become rich in good works, to donate readily, to share,
thus accumulating as treasure a good foundation for the future, so as to win the life that is true life.19 to gather for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may obtain true life.
O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid profane babbling and the absurdities of so-called knowledge.20 O Timothy, guard what has been deposited with you, avoiding the voice of profane novelties and of opposing ideas, which are falsely called knowledge.
By professing it, some people have deviated from the faith. Grace be with all of you.21 Certain persons, promising these things, have perished from the faith. May grace be with you. Amen.
