Those who are under the yoke of slavery must regard their masters as worthy of full respect, so that the name of God and our teaching may not suffer abuse.1 Whosoever are servants under the yoke, let them count their masters worthy of all honour; lest the name of the Lord and his doctrine be blasphemed.
Those whose masters are believers must not take advantage of them because they are brothers but must give better service because those who will profit from their work are believers and are beloved.2 But they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but serve them the rather, because they are faithful and beloved, who are partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
Whoever teaches something different and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the religious teaching3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to that doctrine which is according to godliness,
is conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid disposition for arguments and verbal disputes. From these come envy, rivalry, insults, evil suspicions,4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but sick about questions and strifes of words; from which arise envies, contentions, blasphemies, evil suspicions,
and mutual friction among people with corrupted minds, who are deprived of the truth, supposing religion to be a means of gain.5 Conflicts of men corrupted in mind, and who are destitute of the truth, supposing gain to be godliness.
Indeed, religion with contentment is a great gain.6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
For we brought nothing into the world, just as we shall not be able to take anything out of it.7 For we brought nothing into this world: and certainly we can carry nothing out.
If we have food and clothing, we shall be content with that.8 But having food, and wherewith to be covered, with these we are content.
Those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and into a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge them into ruin and destruction.9 For they that will become rich, fall into temptation, and into the snare of the devil, and into many unprofitable and hurtful desires, which drown men into destruction and perdition.
For the love of money is the root of all evils, and some people in their desire for it have strayed from the faith and have pierced themselves with many pains.10 For the desire of money is the root of all evils; which some coveting have erred from the faith, and have entangled themselves in many sorrows.
But you, man of God, avoid all this. Instead, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.11 But thou, O man of God, fly these things: and pursue justice, godliness, faith, charity, patience, mildness.
Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses.12 Fight the good fight of faith: lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art called, and hast confessed a good confession before many witnesses.
I charge (you) before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate for the noble confession,13 I charge thee before God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate, a good confession,
to keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ14 That thou keep the commandment without spot, blameless, unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that the blessed and only ruler will make manifest at the proper time, the King of kings and Lord of lords,15 Which in his times he shall shew who is the Blessed and only Mighty, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, and whom no human being has seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal power. Amen.16 Who only hath immortality, and inhabiteth light inaccessible, whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and empire everlasting. Amen.
Tell the rich in the present age not to be proud and not to rely on so uncertain a thing as wealth but rather on God, who richly provides us with all things for our enjoyment.17 Charge the rich of this world not to be highminded, nor to trust in the uncertainty of riches, but in the living God, (who giveth us abundantly all things to enjoy,)
Tell them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous, ready to share,18 To do good, to be rich in good works, to give easily, to communicate to others,
thus accumulating as treasure a good foundation for the future, so as to win the life that is true life.19 To lay up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on the true life.
O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid profane babbling and the absurdities of so-called knowledge.20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding the profane novelties of words, and oppositions of knowledge falsely so called.
By professing it, some people have deviated from the faith. Grace be with all of you.21 Which some promising, have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.
