1 But the Israelites violated the ban; Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zerah, son of Zara of the tribe of Judah, took goods that were under the ban, and the anger of the LORD flared up against the Israelites.	1 Gli Israeliti si resero colpevoli di violazione quanto allo sterminio: Acan, figlio di Carmi, figlio di Zabdi, figlio di Zerach, della tribù di Giuda, si impadronì di quanto era votato allo sterminio e allora la collera del Signore si accese contro gli Israeliti.
2 Joshua next sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Bethel on its eastern side, with instructions to go up and reconnoiter the land. When they had explored Ai,	2 Giosuè inviò uomini di Gèrico ad Ai, che è presso Bet-Aven, ad oriente di Betel. Disse loro: "Andate a esplorare la regione". Gli uomini andarono a esplorare Ai.
3 they returned to Joshua and advised, "Do not send all the people up; if only about two or three thousand go up, they can overcome Ai. The enemy there are few; you need not call for an effort from all the people."	3 Poi ritornarono da Giosuè e gli dissero: "Non vada tutto il popolo; vadano all'assalto due o tremila uomini per espugnare Ai; non impegnateci tutto il popolo, perché sono pochi".
4 About three thousand of the people made the attack, but they were defeated by those at Ai,	4 Vi andarono allora del popolo circa tremila uomini, ma si diedero alla fuga dinanzi agli uomini di Ai.
5 who killed some thirty-six of them. They pressed them back across the clearing in front of the city gate till they broke ranks, and defeated them finally on the descent, so that the confidence of the people melted away like water.	5 Gli uomini di Ai ne uccisero circa trentasei, li inseguirono davanti alla porta fino a Sebarim e li colpirono nella discesa. Allora al popolo venne meno il cuore e si sciolse come acqua.
6 Joshua, together with the elders of Israel, rent his garments and lay prostrate before the ark of the LORD until evening; and they threw dust on their heads.	6 Giosuè si stracciò le vesti, si prostrò con la faccia a terra davanti all'arca del Signore fino alla sera e con lui gli anziani di Israele e sparsero polvere sul loro capo.
7 "Alas, O Lord GOD," Joshua prayed, "why did you ever allow this people to pass over the Jordan, delivering us into the power of the Amorites, that they might destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell on the other side of the Jordan.	7 Giosuè esclamò: "Signore Dio, perché hai fatto passare il Giordano a questo popolo, per metterci poi nelle mani dell'Amorreo e distruggerci? Se avessimo deciso di stabilirci oltre il Giordano!
8 Pray, Lord, what can I say, now that Israel has turned its back to its enemies?	8 Perdonami, Signore: che posso dire, dopo che Israele ha voltato le spalle ai suoi nemici?
9 When the Canaanites and the other inhabitants of the land hear of it, they will close in around us and efface our name from the earth. What will you do for your great name?"	9 Lo sapranno i Cananei e tutti gli abitanti della regione, ci accerchieranno e cancelleranno il nostro nome dal paese. E che farai tu per il tuo grande nome?".
10 The LORD replied to Joshua: "Stand up. Why are you lying prostrate?	10 Rispose il Signore a Giosuè: "Alzati, perché stai prostrato sulla faccia?
11 Israel has sinned: they have violated the covenant which I enjoined on them. They have stealthily taken goods subject to the ban, and have deceitfully put them in their baggage.	11 Israele ha peccato. Essi hanno trasgredito l'alleanza che avevo loro prescritto e hanno preso ciò che era votato allo sterminio: hanno rubato, hanno dissimulato e messo nei loro sacchi!
12 If the Israelites cannot stand up to their enemies, but must turn their back to them, it is because they are under the ban. I will not remain with you unless you remove from among you whoever has incurred the ban.	12 Gli Israeliti non potranno resistere ai loro nemici, volteranno le spalle ai loro nemici, perché sono incorsi nello sterminio. Non sarò più con voi, se non eliminerete da voi chi è incorso nello sterminio.
13 Rise, sanctify the people. Tell them to sanctify themselves before tomorrow, for the LORD, the God of Israel, says: You are under the ban, O Israel. You cannot stand up to your enemies until you remove from among you whoever has incurred the ban.	13 Orsù, santifica il popolo. Dirai: Santificatevi per domani, perché dice il Signore, Dio di Israele: Uno votato allo sterminio è in mezzo a te, Israele; tu non potrai resistere ai tuoi nemici, finché non eliminerete da voi chi è votato allo sterminio.
14 In the morning you must present yourselves by tribes. The tribe which the LORD designates shall come forward by clans; the clan which the LORD designates shall come forward by families; the family which the LORD designates shall come forward one by one.	14 Vi accosterete dunque domattina secondo le vostre tribù; la tribù che il Signore avrà designato con la sorte si accosterà per famiglie e la famiglia che il Signore avrà designata si accosterà per case; la casa che il Signore avrà designata si accosterà per individui;
15 He who is designated as having incurred the ban shall be destroyed by fire, with all that is his, because he has violated the covenant of the LORD and has committed a shameful crime in Israel."	15 colui che risulterà votato allo sterminio sarà bruciato dal fuoco con quanto è suo, perché ha trasgredito l'alleanza del Signore e ha commesso un'infamia in Israele".
16 Early the next morning Joshua had Israel come forward by tribes, and the tribe of Judah was designated.	16 Giosuè si alzò di buon mattino e fece accostare Israele secondo le sue tribù e fu designata dalla sorte la tribù di Giuda.
17 Then he had the clans of Judah come forward, and the clan of Zerah was designated. He had the clan of Zerah come forward by families, and Zabdi was designated.	17 Fece accostare le famiglie di Giuda e fu designata la famiglia degli Zerachiti; fece accostare la famiglia degli Zerachiti per case e fu designato Zabdi;
18 Finally he had that family come forward one by one, and Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah, was designated.	18 fece accostare la sua casa per individui e fu designato dalla sorte Acan, figlio di Carmi, figlio di Zabdi, figlio di Zerach, della tribù di Giuda.
19 Joshua said to Achan, "My son, give to the LORD, the God of Israel, glory and honor by telling me what you have done; do not hide it from me."	19 Disse allora Giosuè ad Acan: "Figlio mio, da' gloria al Signore, Dio di Israele, e rendigli omaggio e raccontami ciò che hai fatto, non me lo nascondere".
20 Achan answered Joshua, "I have indeed sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. This is what I have done:	20 Rispose Acan a Giosuè: "In verità, proprio io ho peccato contro il Signore, Dio di Israele, e ho fatto questo e quest'altro.
21 Among the spoils, I saw a beautiful Babylonian mantle, two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold fifty shekels in weight; in my greed I took them. They are now hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath."	21 Avevo visto nel bottino un bel mantello di Sennaar, duecento sicli d'argento e un lingotto d'oro del peso di cinquanta sicli; ne sentii bramosia e li presi ed eccoli nascosti in terra in mezzo alla mia tenda e l'argento è sotto".
22 The messengers whom Joshua sent hastened to the tent and found them hidden there, with the silver underneath.	22 Giosuè mandò allora messaggeri che corsero alla tenda, ed ecco tutto era nascosto nella tenda e l'argento era sotto.
23 They took them from the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites, and spread them out before the LORD.	23 Li presero dalla tenda, li portarono a Giosuè e a tutti gli Israeliti e li deposero davanti al Signore.
24 Then Joshua and all Israel took Achan, son of Zerah, with the silver, the mantle, and the bar of gold, and with his sons and daughters, his ox, his ass and his sheep, his tent, and all his possessions, and led them off to the Valley of Achor.	24 Giosuè allora prese Acan di Zerach e l'argento, il mantello, il lingotto d'oro, i suoi figli, le sue figlie, il suo bue, il suo asino, le sue pecore, la sua tenda e quanto gli apparteneva. Tutto Israele lo seguiva ed egli li condusse alla valle di Acor.
25 Joshua said, "The LORD bring upon you today the misery with which you have afflicted us!" And all Israel stoned him to death	25 Giosuè disse: "Come tu hai portato sventura a noi, così il Signore oggi la porti a te!". Tutto Israele lo lapidò, li bruciarono tutti e li uccisero tutti a sassate.
26 and piled a great heap of stones over him, which remains to the present day. Then the anger of the LORD relented. That is why the place is called the Valley of Achor to this day.	26 Eressero poi sul posto un gran mucchio di pietre, che esiste fino ad oggi. Il Signore allora desistette dal suo tremendo sdegno. Per questo quel luogo si chiama fino ad oggi Valle di Acor.
