1 At that time Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh	1 Josué convoqua les gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé,
2 and said to them: "You have done all that Moses, the servant of the LORD, commanded you, and have obeyed every command I gave you.	2 et leur dit: “Vous avez obéi à tout ce que Moïse, serviteur de Yahvé, vous a ordonné, et vous m’avez obéi dans tout ce que je vous ai commandé.
3 For many years now you have not once abandoned your kinsmen, but have faithfully carried out the commands of the LORD, your God.	3 Bien du temps a passé, mais vous n’avez pas abandonné vos frères jusqu’à ce jour, et vous avez fidèlement observé le commandement de Yahvé votre Dieu.
4 Since, therefore, the LORD, your God, has settled your kinsmen as he promised them, you may now return to your tents beyond the Jordan; to your own land, which Moses, the servant of the LORD, gave you.	4 Maintenant que Yahvé votre Dieu a donné le repos à vos frères comme il l’avait dit, retournez et regagnez vos tentes, dans le pays qui vous appartient et que Moïse, serviteur de Yahvé, vous a donné de l’autre côté du Jourdain.
5 But be very careful to observe the precept and law which Moses, the servant of the LORD, enjoined upon you: love the LORD, your God; follow him faithfully; keep his commandments; remain loyal to him; and serve him with your whole heart and soul."	5 Ayez soin seulement de mettre en pratique les commandements et les lois que Moïse, le serviteur de Yahvé, vous a prescrits. Aimez Yahvé votre Dieu, marchez dans toutes ses voies, gardez ses commandements, attachez-vous à lui et servez-le de tout votre cœur et de toute votre âme.”
6 Joshua then blessed them and sent them away to their own tents.	6 Josué les bénit, puis il les renvoya et ils retournèrent à leurs tentes.
7 (For, to half the tribe of Manasseh Moses had assigned land in Bashan; and to the other half Joshua had given a portion along with their kinsmen west of the Jordan.) What Joshua said to them when he sent them off to their tents with his blessing was,	7 Moïse avait donné le Bashan à une moitié de la tribu de Manassé; à l’autre moitié de la tribu, Josué donna un héritage parmi ses frères, à l’ouest du Jourdain. En les renvoyant à leurs tentes, Josué les bénit.
8 "Now that you are returning to your own tents with great wealth, with very numerous livestock, with silver, gold, bronze and iron, and with a very large supply of clothing, divide these spoils of your enemies with your kinsmen there."	8 Il leur dit: “Retournez à vos tentes chargés de richesses! Que de troupeaux, d’or, d’argent, de bronze, de fer et de vêtements! Partagez les dépouilles de vos ennemis avec vos frères.”
9 So the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the other Israelites at Shiloh in the land of Canaan and returned to the land of Gilead, their own property, which they had received according to the LORD'S command through Moses.	9 Les gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé quittèrent les Israélites à Silo, dans le pays de Canaan. Ils regagnèrent le pays de Galaad, puisque c’était l’héritage qu’ils avaient reçu comme Yahvé l’avait ordonné par Moïse.
10 When the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh came to the region of the Jordan in the land of Canaan, they built there at the Jordan a conspicuously large altar.	10 Lorsqu’ils arrivèrent aux environs du Jourdain qui font partie du pays de Canaan, les gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé construisirent un autel au bord du Jourdain. C’était un autel de taille impressionnante.
11 The other Israelites heard the report that the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had built an altar in the region of the Jordan facing the land of Canaan, across from them,	11 On vint en avertir les Israélites: “Voilà que les gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé ont construit un autel face au pays de Canaan, dans les environs du Jourdain, du côté des Israélites.”
12 and therefore they assembled their whole community at Shiloh to declare war on them.	12 Alors toute la communauté d’Israël se réunit à Silo pour monter contre eux et leur faire la guerre
13 First, however, they sent to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead an embassy consisting of Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest,	13 Les Israélites envoyèrent aux gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé, dans le pays de Galaad, Pinhas, fils d’Éléazar le prêtre,
14 and ten princes, one from every tribe of Israel, each one being both prince and military leader of his ancestral house.	14 et 10 chefs avec lui: un chef de clan pour chacune des tribus d’Israël.
15 When these came to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead, they said to them:	15 Arrivés chez les gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé, au pays de Galaad, ils leur dirent:
16 "The whole community of the LORD sends this message: What act of treachery is this you have committed against the God of Israel? You have seceded from the LORD this day, and rebelled against him by building an altar of your own!	16 “Voici ce que dit la communauté de Yahvé: Quelle infidélité avez-vous commise envers le Dieu d’Israël! Vous voulez donc vous détourner de Yahvé? En bâtissant un autel vous vous révoltez contre Yahvé!
17 For the sin of Peor, a plague came upon the community of the LORD.	17 Le crime de Péor ne suffit-il pas? Nous n’en sommes pas encore guéris après le fléau qui a frappé toute la communauté de Yahvé.
18 We are still not free of that; must you now add to it? You are rebelling against the LORD today and by tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community of Israel!	18 Si vous vous révoltez aujourd’hui contre Yahvé, demain il se mettra en colère contre toute la communauté d’Israël.
19 If you consider the land you now possess unclean, cross over to the land the LORD possesses, where the Dwelling of the LORD stands, and share that with us. But do not rebel against the LORD, nor involve us in rebellion, by building an altar of your own in addition to the altar of the LORD, our God.	19 Si le pays que vous possédez est impur à vos yeux, venez dans le pays qui est l’héritage de Yahvé, là où il a établi sa Demeure. Vous y recevrez un héritage au milieu de nous. Mais ne vous révoltez pas contre Yahvé, ne vous révoltez pas contre nous en bâtissant un autel autre que celui de Yahvé notre Dieu.
20 When Achan, son of Zerah, violated the ban, did not wrath fall upon the entire community of Israel? Though he was but a single man, he did not perish alone for his guilt!"	20 Rappelez-vous l’infidélité d’Akan, fils de Zérah, à propos de l’anathème: la colère de Yahvé a frappé toute la communauté d’Israël, et il ne fut pas le seul à mourir à cause de son crime.”
21 The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh replied to the military leaders of the Israelites: "The LORD is the God of gods.	21 Les gens de Ruben, de Gad et de la demi-tribu de Manassé répondirent aux chefs des clans d’Israël:
22 The LORD, the God of gods, knows and Israel shall know. If now we have acted out of rebellion or treachery against the LORD, our God,	22 “Le Dieu des dieux, Yahvé, le Dieu des dieux, sait la vérité et Israël doit la savoir. Si nous nous sommes révoltés contre Yahvé, si nous lui avons été infidèles, alors, oui! que Yahvé ne nous épargne pas.
23 and if we have built an altar of our own to secede from the LORD, or to offer holocausts, grain offerings or peace offerings upon it, the LORD himself will exact the penalty.	23 Si nous avons bâti cet autel pour nous détourner de Yahvé, pour lui offrir des holocaustes et des oblations, pour y présenter des sacrifices de communion, que Yahvé lui-même nous en demande compte.
24 We did it rather out of our anxious concern lest in the future your children should say to our children: 'What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?	24 Mais nous avons agi de la sorte par crainte de ce qui pourrait arriver plus tard; peut-être un jour vos fils diront-ils aux nôtres: Qu’y a-t-il de commun entre vous et Yahvé le Dieu d’Israël?
25 For the LORD has placed the Jordan as a boundary between you and us. You descendants of Reuben and Gad have no share in the LORD.' Thus your children would prevent ours from revering the LORD.	25 Yahvé a placé le Jourdain comme frontière entre nous et vous, vous n’avez donc point de part avec Yahvé. Et ainsi, à cause de vos fils, nos fils cesseraient de craindre Yahvé.
26 So we decided to guard our interests by building this altar of our own: not for holocausts or for sacrifices,	26 Alors, nous nous sommes dit: Construisons-nous un autel, non pour y offrir des holocaustes ou des sacrifices,
27 but as evidence for you on behalf of ourselves and our descendants, that we have the right to worship the LORD in his presence with our holocausts, sacrifices, and peace offerings. Now in the future your children cannot say to our children, 'You have no share in the LORD.'	27 mais pour qu’il soit témoin entre nous et vous, et nos descendants après nous. Il prouvera que nous pratiquons le culte de Yahvé, en sa présence, par nos holocaustes, nos offrandes et nos sacrifices de communion. Ainsi vos fils ne pourront pas dire à nos fils: Vous n’avez rien à voir avec Yahvé.
28 Our thought was, that if in the future they should speak thus to us or to our descendants, we could answer: 'Look at the model of the altar of the LORD which our fathers made, not for holocausts or for sacrifices, but to witness between you and us.'	28 Nous nous sommes dit: si demain ils nous parlent ainsi à nous ou à nos descendants, nous leur dirons: Regardez la forme de l’autel de Yahvé que nos pères ont construit, non pas pour les holocaustes ou pour les sacrifices, mais pour qu’il soit témoin entre nous et vous.
29 Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD or to secede now from the LORD by building an altar for holocaust, grain offering, or sacrifice in addition to the altar of the LORD, our God, which stands before his Dwelling."	29 Nous ne voulons pas nous révolter contre Yahvé et cesser de le suivre. Nous n’avons pas bâti cet autel pour l’holocauste, pour l’offrande ou pour le sacrifice de communion, par mépris pour l’autel de Yahvé qui est devant sa Demeure.”
30 When Phinehas the priest and the princes of the community, the military leaders of the Israelites, heard what the Reubenites, the Gadites and the Manassehites had to say, they were satisfied.	30 Pinhas le prêtre, les chefs de la communauté et les chefs des clans d’Israël qui étaient avec lui, entendirent les paroles que prononçaient les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et les fils de Manassé, et ces paroles leur plurent.
31 Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest, said to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the Manassehites, "Now we know that the LORD is with us. Since you have not committed this act of treachery against the LORD, you have kept the Israelites free from punishment by the LORD."	31 Alors Pinhas le prêtre dit aux fils de Ruben, de Gad et de Manassé: “Aujourd’hui nous savons que Yahvé est bien au milieu de nous puisque vous n’avez pas commis d’infidélité envers Yahvé et vous avez épargné à Israël les fléaux de Yahvé.”
32 Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes returned from the Reubenites and the Gadites in the land of Gilead to the Israelites in the land of Canaan, and reported the matter to them.	32 Alors, quittant les fils de Ruben et de Gad au pays de Galaad, Pinhas le prêtre et les chefs revinrent au pays de Canaan, vers les Israélites. Il leur rendirent compte de tout,
33 The report satisfied the Israelites, who blessed God and decided against declaring war on the Reubenites and Gadites or ravaging the land they occupied.	33 et les Israélites approuvèrent. Ils bénirent Dieu et renoncèrent à partir en guerre pour ravager le pays où habitaient les fils de Ruben et de Gad.
34 The Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar its name as a witness among them that the LORD is God.	34 Quant aux fils de Ruben et aux fils de Gad, ils appelèrent cet autel Témoin, car, dirent-ils: “Il est témoin entre nous de ce que Yahvé est Dieu.”
