After Moses, the servant of the LORD, had died, the LORD said to Moses' aide Joshua, son of Nun:1 When Moses, servant of Yahweh, was dead, Yahweh spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' adjutant. Hesaid,
"My servant Moses is dead. So prepare to cross the Jordan here, with all the people into the land I will give the Israelites.2 'Moses my servant is dead; go now and cross this Jordan, you and this whole people, into the countrywhich I am giving to them (the Israelites).
As I promised Moses, I will deliver to you every place where you set foot.3 Every place you tread with the soles of your feet I shall give you, as I declared to Moses that I would.
Your domain is to be all the land of the Hittites, from the desert and from Lebanon east to the great river Euphrates and west to the Great Sea.4 From the desert and the Lebanon, to the Great River, the Euphrates (the entire country of the Hittites),and as far as the Great Sea to westward, is to be your territory.
No one can withstand you while you live. I will be with you as I was with Moses: I will not leave you nor forsake you.5 As long as you live, no one wil be able to resist you; I shal be with you as I was with Moses; I shall notfail you or desert you.
Be firm and steadfast, so that you may give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers I would give them.6 'Be strong and stand firm, for you are the man to give this people possession of the land which I sworeto their ancestors that I would give them.
Above all, be firm and steadfast, taking care to observe the entire law which my servant Moses enjoined on you. Do not swerve from it either to the right or to the left, that you may succeed wherever you go.7 Only be strong and stand very firm and be careful to keep the whole Law which my servant Moses laiddown for you. Do not swerve from this either to right or to left, and then you wil succeed wherever you go.
Keep this book of the law on your lips. Recite it by day and by night, that you may observe carefully all that is written in it; then you will successfully attain your goal.8 Have the book of this Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may careful ykeep everything that is written in it. Then your undertakings wil prosper, then you will have success.
I command you: be firm and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD, your God, is with you wherever you go."9 Have I not told you: Be strong and stand firm? Be fearless and undaunted, for go where you may,Yahweh your God is with you.'
So Joshua commanded the officers of the people:10 Joshua then gave the people's officials this instruction:
"Go through the camp and instruct the people, 'Prepare your provisions, for three days from now you shall cross the Jordan here, to march in and take possession of the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you.'"11 'Go through the camp and give the people this order, "Make provisions ready, for in three days' timeyou wil cross this Jordan and go on to take possession of the land which Yahweh your God is giving you as yourown." '
Joshua reminded the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh:12 Joshua then said to the Reubenites and Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,
"Remember what Moses, the servant of the LORD, commanded you when he said, 'The LORD, your God, will permit you to settle in this land.'13 'Remember the order given you by Moses, servant of Yahweh: Yahweh your God, in bringing you torest, has given you the land where we are.
Your wives, your children, and your livestock shall remain in the land Moses gave you here beyond the Jordan. But all the warriors among you must cross over armed ahead of your kinsmen and you must help them14 Your wives, your little ones and your cattle must stay in the country given you by Moses beyond theJordan. But al you fighting men must cross in battle formation at the head of your brothers and help them,
until the LORD has settled your kinsmen, and they like you possess the land which the LORD, your God, is giving them. Afterward you may return and occupy your own land, which Moses, the servant of the LORD, has given you east of the Jordan."15 until Yahweh grants rest to your brothers and you alike, when they too have taken possession of theland which Yahweh your God is giving to them. Then you may go back and take possession of the land whichbelongs to you and which Moses, servant of Yahweh, has given you on the eastern side of the Jordan.'
"We will do all you have commanded us," they answered Joshua, "and we will go wherever you send us. We will obey you as completely as we obeyed Moses.16 They answered Joshua, 'We wil do whatever you order us, and wherever you send us we wil go.
But may the LORD, your God, be with you as he was with Moses.17 We obeyed Moses in everything, and now we will obey you. Only may Yahweh your God be with youas he was with Moses!
If anyone rebels against your orders and does not obey every command you give him, he shall be put to death. But be firm and steadfast."18 If anyone rebels against your orders or will not listen to your commands, let him be put to death. Only be strong and stand firm.'
