For you yourselves know, brothers, that our reception among you was not without effect.1 For yourselves know, brethren, our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain:
Rather, after we had suffered and been insolently treated, as you know, in Philippi, we drew courage through our God to speak to you the gospel of God with much struggle.2 But having suffered many things before, and been shamefully treated (as you know) at Philippi, we had confidence in our God, to speak unto you the gospel of God in much carefulness.
Our exhortation was not from delusion or impure motives, nor did it work through deception.3 For our exhortation was not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in deceit:
But as we were judged worthy by God to be entrusted with the gospel, that is how we speak, not as trying to please human beings, but rather God, who judges our hearts.4 But as we were approved by God that the gospel should be committed to us: even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who proveth our hearts.
Nor, indeed, did we ever appear with flattering speech, as you know, or with a pretext for greed--God is witness--5 For neither have we used, at any time, the speech of flattery, as you know; nor taken an occasion of covetousness, God is witness:
nor did we seek praise from human beings, either from you or from others,6 Nor sought we glory of men, neither of you, nor of others. 7 Whereas we might have been burdensome to you, as the apostles of Christ: but we became little ones in the midst of you, as if a nurse should cherish her children:
although we were able to impose our weight as apostles of Christ. Rather, we were gentle among you, as a nursing mother cares for her children.7 dummy verses inserted by amos
With such affection for you, we were determined to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our very selves as well, so dearly beloved had you become to us.8 So desirous of you, we would gladly impart unto you not only the gospel of God, but also our own souls: because you were become most dear unto us.
You recall, brothers, our toil and drudgery. Working night and day in order not to burden any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.9 For you remember, brethren, our labour and toil: working night and day, lest we should be chargeable to any of you, we preached among you the gospel of God.
You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and justly and blamelessly we behaved toward you believers.10 You are witnesses, and God also, how holily, and justly, and without blame, we have been to you that have believed:
As you know, we treated each one of you as a father treats his children,11 As you know in what manner, entreating and comforting you, (as a father doth his children,)
exhorting and encouraging you and insisting that you conduct yourselves as worthy of the God who calls you into his kingdom and glory.12 We testified to every one of you, that you would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
And for this reason we too give thanks to God unceasingly, that,in receiving the word of God from hearing us, you received not a human word but, as it truly is, the word of God, which is now atwork in you who believe.13 Therefore, we also give thanks to God without ceasing: because, that when you had received of us the word of the hearing of God, you received it not as the word of men, but (as it is indeed) the word of God, who worketh in you that have believed.
For you, brothers, have become imitators of the churches of God that are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For you suffer the same things from your compatriots as they did from the Jews,14 For you, brethren, are become followers of the churches of God which are in Judea, in Christ Jesus: for you also have suffered the same things from your own coutrymen, even as they have from the Jews,
who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets and persecuted us; they do not please God, and are opposed to everyone,15 Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and the prophets, and have persecuted us, and please not God, and are adversaries to all men;
trying to prevent us from speaking to the Gentiles that they may be saved, thus constantly filling up the measure of their sins. But the wrath of God has finally begun to come upon them.16 Prohibiting us to speak to the Gentiles, that they may be saved, to fill up their sins always: for the wrath of God is come upon them to the end.
Brothers, when we were bereft of you for a short time, in person, not in heart, we were all the more eager in our great desire to see you in person.17 But we, brethren, being taken away from you for a short time, in sight, not in heart, have hastened the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.
We decided to go to you--I, Paul, not only once but more than once--yet Satan thwarted us.18 For we would have come unto you, I Paul indeed, once and again: but Satan hath hindered us.
For what is our hope or joy or crown to boast of in the presence of our Lord Jesus at his coming if not you yourselves?19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of glory? Are not you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?
For you are our glory and joy.20 For you are our glory and joy.
