1 Five days later the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and an advocate, a certain Tertullus, and they presented formal charges against Paul to the governor.	1 Cinq jours plus tard, le grand prêtre Ananias descendit à Césarée avec un groupe d’Anciens et un avocat, un certain Tertullus. Ils se présentèrent devant le gouverneur comme accusateurs de Paul.
2 When he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, "Since we have attained much peace through you, and reforms have been accomplished in this nation through your provident care,	2 On le fit appeler, et Tertullus commença son réquisitoire: "Excellent Félix, nous jouissons d’une vraie tranquillité grâce à toi et aux réformes que tu as su prévoir pour le bien de cette nation.
3 we acknowledge this in every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, with all gratitude.	3 Constamment et partout nous savons le reconnaître et nous t’en disons un vrai merci.
4 But in order not to detain you further, I ask you to give us a brief hearing with your customary graciousness.	4 Mais je ne voudrais pas t’importuner, et je te prie de nous écouter quelques instants avec ta bienveillance habituelle.
5 We found this man to be a pest; he creates dissension among Jews all over the world and is a ringleader of the sect of the Nazoreans.	5 “Nous avons établi que cet homme soulève des émeutes chez tous les Juifs du monde civilisé: c’est une vraie peste! Et c’est un des porte-paroles de la secte des Nazaréens.
6 He even tried to desecrate our temple, but we arrested him.	6 Il a essayé de profaner le Temple, aussi l’avons-nous arrêté et voulions-nous le juger selon notre Loi.
7	7 C’est alors que le commandant Lysias est intervenu de façon très violente; il nous l’a arraché des mains et a ordonné à ses accusateurs de se présenter devant toi.
8 If you examine him you will be able to learn from him for yourself about everything of which we are accusing him."	8 Tu pourras d’ailleurs lui faire confirmer tous ces détails et tu sauras ainsi de quoi nous l’accusons.”
9 The Jews also joined in the attack and asserted that these things were so.	9 Les Juifs l’appuyèrent et certifièrent que tout cela était exact.
10 Then the governor motioned to him to speak and Paul replied, "I know that you have been a judge over this nation for many years and so I am pleased to make my defense before you.	10 Alors, sur un signe du gouverneur, Paul prit la parole: “Je sais que tu gouvernes cette nation depuis un bon nombre d’années, et pour cela même je me défendrai plus spontanément.
11 As you can verify, not more than twelve days have passed since I went up to Jerusalem to worship.	11 Tu pourras d’abord vérifier toi-même que je suis à Jérusalem depuis seulement douze jours: j’y suis venu pour adorer.
12 Neither in the temple, nor in the synagogues, nor anywhere in the city did they find me arguing with anyone or instigating a riot among the people.	12 Ensuite, on ne m’a pas pris dans le Temple en train de discuter ou d’exciter la foule, et pas davantage dans les synagogues ou en ville.
13 Nor can they prove to you the accusations they are now making against me.	13 Ils sont incapables de prouver ce dont ils m’accusent en ce moment.
14 But this I do admit to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our ancestors and I believe everything that is in accordance with the law and written in the prophets.	14 “Mais c’est vrai, je t’avoue que je sers le Dieu de mes pères selon notre Chemin, qu’ils traitent d’hérésie. Je crois donc tout ce qui est écrit dans la Loi et les Prophètes,
15 I have the same hope in God as they themselves have that there will be a resurrection of the righteous and the unrighteous.	15 et j’attends de Dieu, comme eux-mêmes l’attendent, une résurrection des bons et des mauvais.
16 Because of this, I always strive to keep my conscience clear before God and man.	16 C’est bien pourquoi j’ai soin d’être irréprochable sur tous les plans, aussi bien devant Dieu que devant les hommes.
17 After many years, I came to bring alms for my nation and offerings.	17 “Après bien des années, je suis venu à la fois pour porter une aide à ceux de ma nation, et pour présenter des offrandes.
18 While I was so engaged, they found me, after my purification, in the temple without a crowd or disturbance.	18 C’est la raison pour laquelle ils m’ont trouvé dans le Temple. J’étais en état de pureté, il n’y avait ni attroupement ni tumulte;
19 But some Jews from the province of Asia, who should be here before you to make whatever accusation they might have against me--	19 il y a eu seulement ces Juifs d’Asie: ils auraient bien dû venir et m’accuser s’ils avaient quelque chose à me reprocher!
20 or let these men themselves state what crime they discovered when I stood before the Sanhedrin,	20 “Mais ceux qui sont ici devraient dire quel délit ils m’ont trouvé quand j’ai comparu devant le Sanhédrin.
21 unless it was my one outcry as I stood among them, that 'I am on trial before you today for the resurrection of the dead.'"	21 À moins que ce soit parce que j’ai crié face à eux: C’est pour la résurrection des morts que je suis aujourd’hui devant vous en accusé.”
22 Then Felix, who was accurately informed about the Way, postponed the trial, saying, "When Lysias the commander comes down, I shall decide your case."	22 Félix était fort bien informé au sujet du Chemin, aussi les renvoya-t-il en disant: "Quand le commandant Lysias sera descendu, je déciderai votre affaire.”
23 He gave orders to the centurion that he should be kept in custody but have some liberty, and that he should not prevent any of his friends from caring for his needs.	23 Félix donna des instructions au centurion: il devait garder Paul, mais avec une certaine souplesse, et n’empêcher aucun des siens de lui venir en aide.
24 Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish. He had Paul summoned and listened to him speak about faith in Christ Jesus.	24 Quelques jours plus tard, Félix vint avec sa femme Drusille qui était juive. Il fit appeler Paul et l’entendit sur la foi au Christ Jésus.
25 But as he spoke about righteousness and self-restraint and the coming judgment, Felix became frightened and said, "You may go for now; when I find an opportunity I shall summon you again."	25 Mais quand il commença à discuter sur la justice, le contrôle des instincts et le jugement à venir, Félix prit peur. Il coupa: "Pour l’instant tu peux t’en aller, je trouverai un moment pour te rappeler.”
26 At the same time he hoped that a bribe would be offered him by Paul, and so he sent for him very often and conversed with him.	26 De fait, il espérait obtenir de Paul quelque présent, c’est pourquoi il l’appelait assez régulièrement et conversait avec lui.
27 Two years passed and Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. Wishing to ingratiate himself with the Jews, Felix left Paul in prison.	27 Deux années s’écoulèrent ainsi. Félix fut alors remplacé par Porcius Festus et, comme il voulait faire aux Juifs une faveur, il laissa Paul en captivité.
