When he had said this, Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley to where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.1 Depois dessas palavras, Jesus saiu com os seus discípulos para além da torrente de Cedron, onde havia um jardim, no qual entrou com os seus discípulos.
Judas his betrayer also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.2 Judas, o traidor, conhecia também aquele lugar, porque Jesus ia freqüentemente para lá com os seus discípulos.
So Judas got a band of soldiers and guards from the chief priests and the Pharisees and went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.3 Tomou então Judas a coorte e os guardas de serviço dos pontífices e dos fariseus, e chegaram ali com lanternas, tochas e armas.
Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen to him, went out and said to them, "Whom are you looking for?"4 Como Jesus soubesse tudo o que havia de lhe acontecer, adiantou-se e perguntou-lhes: A quem buscais?
They answered him, "Jesus the Nazorean." He said to them, "I AM." Judas his betrayer was also with them.5 Responderam: A Jesus de Nazaré. Sou eu, disse-lhes. {Também Judas, o traidor, estava com eles.}
When he said to them, "I AM," they turned away and fell to the ground.6 Quando lhes disse Sou eu, recuaram e caíram por terra.
So he again asked them, "Whom are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus the Nazorean."7 Perguntou-lhes ele, pela segunda vez: A quem buscais? Disseram: A Jesus de Nazaré.
Jesus answered, "I told you that I AM. So if you are looking for me, let these men go."8 Replicou Jesus: Já vos disse que sou eu.
This was to fulfill what he had said, "I have not lost any of those you gave me."9 Assim se cumpriu a palavra que disse: Dos que me deste não perdi nenhum {Jo 17,12}.
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear. The slave's name was Malchus.10 Simão Pedro, que tinha uma espada, puxou dela e feriu o servo do sumo sacerdote, decepando-lhe a orelha direita. {O servo chamava-se Malco.}
Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into its scabbard. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father gave me?"11 Mas Jesus disse a Pedro: Enfia a tua espada na bainha! Não hei de beber eu o cálice que o Pai me deu?
So the band of soldiers, the tribune, and the Jewish guards seized Jesus, bound him,12 Então a coorte, o tribuno e os guardas dos judeus prenderam Jesus e o ataram.
and brought him to Annas first. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.13 Conduziram-no primeiro a Anás, por ser sogro de Caifás, que era o sumo sacerdote daquele ano.
It was Caiaphas who had counseled the Jews that it was better that one man should die rather than the people.14 Caifás fora quem dera aos judeus o conselho: Convém que um só homem morra em lugar do povo.
Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Now the other disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered the courtyard of the high priest with Jesus.15 Simão Pedro seguia Jesus, e mais outro discípulo.
But Peter stood at the gate outside. So the other disciple, the acquaintance of the high priest, went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought Peter in.16 porém Pedro ficou de fora, à porta.
Then the maid who was the gatekeeper said to Peter, "You are not one of this man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."17 A porteira perguntou a Pedro: Não és acaso também tu dos discípulos desse homem? Não o sou, respondeu ele.
Now the slaves and the guards were standing around a charcoal fire that they had made, because it was cold, and were warming themselves. Peter was also standing there keeping warm.18 Os servos e os guardas acenderam um fogo, porque fazia frio, e se aqueciam.
The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine.19 O sumo sacerdote indagou de Jesus acerca dos seus discípulos e da sua doutrina.
Jesus answered him, "I have spoken publicly to the world. I have always taught in a synagogue or in the temple area where all the Jews gather, and in secret I have said nothing.20 Jesus respondeu-lhe: Falei publicamente ao mundo. Ensinei na sinagoga e no templo, onde se reúnem os judeus, e nada falei às ocultas.
Why ask me? Ask those who heard me what I said to them. They know what I said."21 Por que me perguntas? Pergunta àqueles que ouviram o que lhes disse. Estes sabem o que ensinei.
When he had said this, one of the temple guards standing there struck Jesus and said, "Is this the way you answer the high priest?"22 A estas palavras, um dos guardas presentes deu uma bofetada em Jesus, dizendo: É assim que respondes ao sumo sacerdote?
Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?"23 Replicou-lhe Jesus: Se falei mal, prova-o, mas se falei bem, por que me bates?
Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.24 {Anás enviou-o preso ao sumo sacerdote Caifás.}
Now Simon Peter was standing there keeping warm. And they said to him, "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it and said, "I am not."25 Simão Pedro estava lá se aquecendo.
One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?"26 Disse-lhe um dos servos do sumo sacerdote, parente daquele a quem Pedro cortara a orelha: Não te vi eu com ele no horto?
Again Peter denied it. And immediately the cock crowed.27 Mas Pedro negou-o outra vez, e imediatamente o galo cantou.
Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was morning. And they themselves did not enter the praetorium, in order not to be defiled so that they could eat the Passover.28 Da casa de Caifás conduziram Jesus ao pretório.
So Pilate came out to them and said, "What charge do you bring (against) this man?"29 Saiu, por isso, Pilatos para ter com eles, e perguntou: Que acusação trazeis contra este homem?
They answered and said to him, "If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you."30 Responderam-lhe: Se este não fosse malfeitor, não o teríamos entregue a ti.
At this, Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law." The Jews answered him, "We do not have the right to execute anyone,"31 Disse, então, Pilatos: Tomai-o e julgai-o vós mesmos segundo a vossa lei.
in order that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled that he said indicating the kind of death he would die.32 Assim se cumpria a palavra com a qual Jesus indicou de que gênero de morte havia de morrer {Mt 20,19}.
So Pilate went back into the praetorium and summoned Jesus and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"33 Pilatos entrou no pretório, chamou Jesus e perguntou-lhe: És tu o rei dos judeus?
Jesus answered, "Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?"34 Jesus respondeu: Dizes isso por ti mesmo, ou foram outros que to disseram de mim?
Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?"35 Disse Pilatos: Acaso sou eu judeu? A tua nação e os sumos sacerdotes entregaram-te a mim. Que fizeste?
Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants (would) be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here."36 Respondeu Jesus: O meu Reino não é deste mundo.
So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."37 Perguntou-lhe então Pilatos: És, portanto, rei? Respondeu Jesus: Sim, eu sou rei.
Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" When he had said this, he again went out to the Jews and said to them, "I find no guilt in him.38 Disse-lhe Pilatos: Que é a verdade?... Falando isso, saiu de novo, foi ter com os judeus e disse-lhes: Não acho nele crime algum.
But you have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at Passover. Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"39 Mas é costume entre vós que pela Páscoa vos solte um preso. Quereis, pois, que vos solte o rei dos judeus?
They cried out again, "Not this one but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.40 Então todos gritaram novamente e disseram: Não! A este não! Mas a Barrabás! {Barrabás era um salteador.}
