1 When he had said this, Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley to where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.	1 Après avoir dit cela, Jésus sortit avec ses disciples et traversa le torrent du Cédron. Il y avait là un jardin où il entra avec ses disciples.
2 Judas his betrayer also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.	2 Judas qui le trahissait connaissait ce lieu, parce que Jésus s’était souvent retrouvé là avec ses disciples.
3 So Judas got a band of soldiers and guards from the chief priests and the Pharisees and went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.	3 Judas prit donc avec lui des soldats de la garnison et des gardes fournis par les grands prêtres et les Pharisiens, et il arrive avec des torches, des lampes et des armes.
4 Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen to him, went out and said to them, "Whom are you looking for?"	4 Jésus savait tout ce qui allait lui arriver. Il s’avança et leur dit: "Qui cherchez-vous?”
5 They answered him, "Jesus the Nazorean." He said to them, "I AM." Judas his betrayer was also with them.	5 Ils lui répondirent: "Jésus le Nazôréen.” Il leur dit: "C’est moi.” Judas, le traître, se tenait là aussi avec eux.
6 When he said to them, "I AM," they turned away and fell to the ground.	6 À cette parole de Jésus: ‘C’est moi’, ils reculèrent et tombèrent à terre.
7 So he again asked them, "Whom are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus the Nazorean."	7 Jésus leur demanda de nouveau: "Qui cherchez-vous?” Ils répondirent: "Jésus le Nazôréen.”
8 Jesus answered, "I told you that I AM. So if you are looking for me, let these men go."	8 Jésus leur dit: "Je vous l’ai déjà dit: c’est moi. Si c’est moi que vous cherchez, laissez ceux-là s’en aller.”
9 This was to fulfill what he had said, "I have not lost any of those you gave me."	9 Ainsi devait s’accomplir la parole que Jésus avait dite: "Je n’ai laissé perdre aucun de ceux que tu m’as donnés.”
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear. The slave's name was Malchus.	10 Simon-Pierre avait une épée, il la tira pour frapper le serviteur du Grand Prêtre et lui coupa l’oreille droite. Ce serviteur s’appelait Malkus.
11 Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into its scabbard. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father gave me?"	11 Alors Jésus dit à Pierre: "Remets l’épée au fourreau. Est-ce que je peux ne pas boire la coupe que mon Père m’a donnée?”
12 So the band of soldiers, the tribune, and the Jewish guards seized Jesus, bound him,	12 Les soldats de la garnison et leur commandant, avec les policiers des Juifs, se saisirent alors de Jésus et le lièrent avec des cordes.
13 and brought him to Annas first. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.	13 Ils le conduisirent d’abord chez Anne, le beau-père de Caïphe qui était Grand Prêtre cette année-là.
14 It was Caiaphas who had counseled the Jews that it was better that one man should die rather than the people.	14 Et c’était Caïphe qui avait donné aux Juifs cet argument: “Il vaut mieux qu’un homme meure à la place du peuple.”
15 Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Now the other disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered the courtyard of the high priest with Jesus.	15 Simon-Pierre et un autre disciple suivaient Jésus. Comme ce disciple était connu du Grand Prêtre, il entra avec Jésus dans la cour du Grand Prêtre,
16 But Peter stood at the gate outside. So the other disciple, the acquaintance of the high priest, went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought Peter in.	16 et Pierre restait dehors à la porte. Mais l’autre disciple connu du Grand Prêtre, ressortit et dit un mot à la gardienne, et il fit entrer Pierre.
17 Then the maid who was the gatekeeper said to Peter, "You are not one of this man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."	17 Alors cette jeune servante qui gardait la porte dit à Pierre: "Toi aussi tu es un des disciples de cet homme?” Mais lui répondit: "Je n’en suis pas!”
18 Now the slaves and the guards were standing around a charcoal fire that they had made, because it was cold, and were warming themselves. Peter was also standing there keeping warm.	18 Les serviteurs et les gardes étaient là. Ils avaient fait du feu pour se chauffer car il faisait froid, et Pierre était là à se chauffer avec eux.
19 The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine.	19 Pendant ce temps le Grand Prêtre interrogeait Jésus sur ses disciples et sur son enseignement.
20 Jesus answered him, "I have spoken publicly to the world. I have always taught in a synagogue or in the temple area where all the Jews gather, and in secret I have said nothing.	20 Jésus lui répondit: "J’ai parlé ouvertement au monde; j’ai constamment enseigné dans la synagogue et dans le Temple, là où les Juifs se réunissent, et je n’ai rien dit en secret.
21 Why ask me? Ask those who heard me what I said to them. They know what I said."	21 Pourquoi m’interroges-tu? Demande à ceux qui m’ont écouté ce que je leur ai dit.”
22 When he had said this, one of the temple guards standing there struck Jesus and said, "Is this the way you answer the high priest?"	22 À ce moment, un des gardes qui étaient là donna un coup à Jésus, en lui disant: "C’est ainsi que tu réponds au Grand Prêtre?”
23 Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?"	23 Jésus lui répondit: "Si j’ai mal parlé, montre où est le mal; mais si j’ai bien parlé, pourquoi me frappes-tu?”
24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.	24 Finalement, Anne envoya Jésus chez Caïphe; on l’avait lié.
25 Now Simon Peter was standing there keeping warm. And they said to him, "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it and said, "I am not."	25 Simon-Pierre était toujours là à se chauffer. On lui dit: "Bien sûr, toi aussi tu fais partie de ses disciples.” Mais il le nia et il répondit: "Je n’en suis pas.”
26 One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?"	26 Un des serviteurs du Grand Prêtre, un parent de celui à qui Pierre avait coupé l’oreille, affirma alors: "Mais oui, je t’ai vu avec lui dans le jardin!”
27 Again Peter denied it. And immediately the cock crowed.	27 De nouveau Pierre nia et, aussitôt après, le coq chanta.
28 Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was morning. And they themselves did not enter the praetorium, in order not to be defiled so that they could eat the Passover.	28 On emmena donc Jésus de chez Caïphe au palais du gouverneur romain. C’était le matin. Les Juifs n’entrèrent pas car ce lieu les aurait souillés, et ils voulaient pouvoir manger la Pâque.
29 So Pilate came out to them and said, "What charge do you bring (against) this man?"	29 Pilate sortit donc vers eux à l’extérieur et leur demanda: "De quoi accusez-vous cet homme?”
30 They answered and said to him, "If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you."	30 Ils lui répondirent: "S’il ne faisait rien de mal, nous ne serions pas venus te l’amener.”
31 At this, Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law." The Jews answered him, "We do not have the right to execute anyone,"	31 Pilate leur dit: "Gardez-le donc, et jugez-le selon votre loi.” Les Juifs lui dirent: "Mais nous n’avons pas le droit de condamner quelqu’un à mort.”
32 in order that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled that he said indicating the kind of death he would die.	32 C’est ainsi que devait se réaliser la parole de Jésus à propos du genre de supplice où il allait mourir.
33 So Pilate went back into the praetorium and summoned Jesus and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"	33 Pilate rentre donc dans le palais. Il fait appeler Jésus et lui demande: "C’est toi le roi des Juifs?”
34 Jesus answered, "Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?"	34 Jésus répond: "Ce que tu me dis là, est-ce que tu le penses, ou est-ce que d’autres te l’ont dit de moi?”
35 Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?"	35 Pilate dit alors: "Est-ce que je suis juif, par hasard? C’est ton peuple, ce sont les chefs des prêtres qui t’amènent devant moi. Qu’as-tu fait?”
36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants (would) be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here."	36 Jésus répond: "Ma royauté n’est pas de ce monde. Si ma royauté était de ce monde, mes gens auraient combattu pour que je ne sois pas livré aux Juifs. Mais non, ma royauté n’est pas d’ici-bas.”
37 So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."	37 Alors Pilate lui dit: "Donc, tout de même, tu es roi?” Jésus répond: "Tu dis bien: je suis roi. Je rends témoignage à la vérité, c’est pour cela que je suis né et que je suis venu dans le monde. Tous ceux qui sont pour la vérité écoutent ma voix.”
38 Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" When he had said this, he again went out to the Jews and said to them, "I find no guilt in him.	38 Alors Pilate lui dit: "Où est la vérité?” Il sortit de nouveau vers les Juifs et leur dit: "Je ne trouve rien à condamner chez cet homme.
39 But you have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at Passover. Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"	39 D’ailleurs c’est une coutume chez vous que je vous relâche un prisonnier pour la fête de la Pâque. Si vous le voulez, je vais relâcher le roi des Juifs.”
40 They cried out again, "Not this one but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.	40 Mais de nouveau ce furent des cris: "Pas celui-ci! Relâche Barabbas!” Ce Barabbas était un bandit.
