1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,	1 No ano décimo quinto do império de Tibério César, sendo Pôncio Pilatos governador da Judeia, Herodes tetrarca da Galileia, Filipe, seu irmão, tetrarca da Itureia e da província da Traconítida, Lisânias tetrarca da Abilina.
2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the desert.	2 sendo pontífices Anás e Caifás, o Senhor falou a João, filho de Zacarias, no deserto.
3 He went throughout (the) whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,	3 E ele foi por toda a terra do Jordão, pregando o baptismo de penitência para remissão dos pecados,
4 as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one crying out in the desert: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.	4 como está escrito no livro das palavras do profeta (Is. 40, 3-5): Voz do que clama no deserto; Preparai o caminho do Senhor, endireitai as suas veredas;
5 Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth,	5 toda o vale será terraplanado, todo o monte e colina serão arrasados, os caminhos tortuosos tornar-se-ão direitos, os escabrosos planos;
6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'"	6 e todo o homem verá a salvação de Deus,
7 He said to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?	7 Dizia pois (João) às multidões, que vinham para ser por ele baptizadas: "Raça de víboras, quem vos ensinou a fugir da ira que vos ameaça?
8 Produce good fruits as evidence of your repentance; and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father,' for I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones.	8 Fazei, portanto, frutos dignos de penitência, e não comeceis a dizer: Temos Abraão por pai. Porque eu vos digo que Deus é poderoso para suscitar destas pedras filhos de Abraão.
9 Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."	9 Porque o machado já está posto à raiz das árvores. Toda a árvore que não dá bom fruto, será cortada e lançada no fogo."
10 And the crowds asked him, "What then should we do?"	10 As multidões interrogavam-no, dizendo: "Que devemos pois nós fazer?"
11 He said to them in reply, "Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise."	11 Respondendo, dizia-lhes: "O que tem duas túnicas, dê uma ao que não tem; e o que tem que comer, faça o mesmo."
12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized and they said to him, "Teacher, what should we do?"	12 Foram também publicanos, para serem baptizados, e disseram-lhe: "Mestre, que devemos nós fazer?"
13 He answered them, "Stop collecting more than what is prescribed."	13 Ele respondeu-lhes: "Não exijais nada além do que vos está fixado."
14 Soldiers also asked him, "And what is it that we should do?" He told them, "Do not practice extortion, do not falsely accuse anyone, and be satisfied with your wages."	14 Interrogavam-no também os soldados: "E nós que faremos?" Respondeu-lhes: "Não façais violência a ninguém, nem denuncieis falsamente, e contentai-vos com o vosso soldo."
15 Now the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah.	15 Estando o povo na espectativa, e pensando todos nos seus corações que talvez João fosse o Cristo,
16 John answered them all, saying, "I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire.	16 João respondeu, dizendo a todos; "Eu na verdade baptizo-vos em água, mas virá um mais forte do que eu, a quem não sou digno de desatar a correia dos seus sapatos; ele vos baptizará no Espírito Santo e no fogo;
17 His winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."	17 tomará na sua mão a pá, limpará a sua eira, e recolherá o trigo no seu celeiro, mas a palha queimá-la-à num fogo inextinguível."
18 Exhorting them in many other ways, he preached good news to the people.	18 Por muitas outras exortações anunciava ao povo a boa nova.
19 Now Herod the tetrarch, who had been censured by him because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and because of all the evil deeds Herod had committed,	19 Porém, Herodes tetrarca, sendo repreendido por ele por causa de Herodíades, mulher de seu irmão, e por causa de todos os males que tinha feito,
20 added still another to these by (also) putting John in prison.	20 acrescentou a todos os outros crimes também este: Mandar meter João num cárcere.
21 After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened	21 Ora aconteceu que, recebendo o baptismo todo o povo, baptizado também Jesus, e estando em oração, abriu-se o céu,
22 and the holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."	22 e desceu sobre ele o Espírito Santo em forma corpórea como uma pomba. E ouviu-se do céu esta voz: "Tu és o meu Filho dílecto; em ti pus as minhas complacências."
23 When Jesus began his ministry he was about thirty years of age. He was the son, as was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli,	23 Jesus, quando começou o seu ministério, tinha cerca de trinta anos, filho, como se julgava, de José, filho de Heli, filho de Matat,
24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,	24 filho de Levi, filho de Melqui, filho de Jane, filho de José,
