NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
They came to the other side of the sea, to the territory of the Gerasenes.1 Et venerunt trans fretum maris in regionem Gerasenorum.
When he got out of the boat, at once a man from the tombs who had an unclean spirit met him.2 Et exeunti ei de navi, statim occurrit de monumentis homo in spiritu immundo,
The man had been dwelling among the tombs, and no one could restrain him any longer, even with a chain.3 qui domicilium habebat in monumentis, et neque catenis jam quisquam poterat eum ligare :
In fact, he had frequently been bound with shackles and chains, but the chains had been pulled apart by him and the shackles smashed, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.4 quoniam sæpe compedibus et catenis vinctus, dirupisset catenas, et compedes comminuisset, et nemo poterat eum domare :
Night and day among the tombs and on the hillsides he was always crying out and bruising himself with stones.5 et semper die ac nocte in monumentis, et in montibus erat, clamans, et concidens se lapidibus.
Catching sight of Jesus from a distance, he ran up and prostrated himself before him,6 Videns autem Jesum a longe, cucurrit, et adoravit eum :
crying out in a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me!"7 et clamans voce magna dixit : Quid mihi et tibi, Jesu Fili Dei altissimi ? adjuro te per Deum, ne me torqueas.
(He had been saying to him, "Unclean spirit, come out of the man!")8 Dicebat enim illi : Exi spiritus immunde ab homine.
He asked him, "What is your name?" He replied, "Legion is my name. There are many of us."9 Et interrogabat eum : Quod tibi nomen est ? Et dicit ei : Legio mihi nomen est, quia multi sumus.
And he pleaded earnestly with him not to drive them away from that territory.10 Et deprecabatur eum multum, ne se expelleret extra regionem.
Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside.11 Erat autem ibi circa montem grex porcorum magnus, pascens.
And they pleaded with him, "Send us into the swine. Let us enter them."12 Et deprecabantur eum spiritus, dicentes : Mitte nos in porcos ut in eos introëamus.
And he let them, and the unclean spirits came out and entered the swine. The herd of about two thousand rushed down a steep bank into the sea, where they were drowned.13 Et concessit eis statim Jesus. Et exeuntes spiritus immundi introierunt in porcos : et magno impetu grex præcipitatus est in mare ad duo millia, et suffocati sunt in mari.
The swineherds ran away and reported the incident in the town and throughout the countryside. And people came out to see what had happened.14 Qui autem pascebant eos, fugerunt, et nuntiaverunt in civitatem et in agros. Et egressi sunt videre quid esset factum :
As they approached Jesus, they caught sight of the man who had been possessed by Legion, sitting there clothed and in his right mind. And they were seized with fear.15 et veniunt ad Jesum : et vident illum qui a dæmonio vexabatur, sedentem, vestitum, et sanæ mentis, et timuerunt.
Those who witnessed the incident explained to them what had happened to the possessed man and to the swine.16 Et narraverunt illis, qui viderant, qualiter factum esset ei qui dæmonium habuerat, et de porcis.
Then they began to beg him to leave their district.17 Et rogare cœperunt eum ut discederet de finibus eorum.
As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed pleaded to remain with him.18 Cumque ascenderet navim, cœpit illum deprecari, qui a dæmonio vexatus fuerat, ut esset cum illo,
But he would not permit him but told him instead, "Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you."19 et non admisit eum, sed ait illi : Vade in domum tuam ad tuos, et annuntia illis quanta tibi Dominus fecerit, et misertus sit tui.
Then the man went off and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him; and all were amazed.20 Et abiit, et cœpit prædicare in Decapoli, quanta sibi fecisset Jesus : et omnes mirabantur.
When Jesus had crossed again (in the boat) to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed close to the sea.21 Et cum transcendisset Jesus in navi rursum trans fretum, convenit turba multa ad eum, et erat circa mare.
One of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came forward. Seeing him he fell at his feet22 Et venit quidam de archisynagogis nomine Jairus, et videns eum procidit ad pedes ejus,
and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, "My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live."23 et deprecabatur eum multum, dicens : Quoniam filia mea in extremis est, veni, impone manum super eam, ut salva sit, et vivat.
He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him.24 Et abiit cum illo, et sequebatur eum turba multa, et comprimebant eum.
There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years.25 Et mulier, quæ erat in profluvio sanguinis annis duodecim,
She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew worse.26 et fuerat multa perpessa a compluribus medicis : et erogaverat omnia sua, nec quidquam profecerat, sed magis deterius habebat :
She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak.27 cum audisset de Jesu, venit in turba retro, et tetigit vestimentum ejus :
She said, "If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured."28 dicebat enim : Quia si vel vestimentum ejus tetigero, salva ero.
Immediately her flow of blood dried up. She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.29 Et confestim siccatus est fons sanguinis ejus : et sensit corpore quia sanata esset a plaga.
Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who has touched my clothes?"30 Et statim Jesus in semetipso cognoscens virtutem quæ exierat de illo, conversus ad turbam, aiebat : Quis tetigit vestimenta mea ?
But his disciples said to him, "You see how the crowd is pressing upon you, and yet you ask, 'Who touched me?'"31 Et dicebant ei discipuli sui : Vides turbam comprimentem te, et dicis : Quis me tetigit ?
And he looked around to see who had done it.32 Et circumspiciebat videre eam, quæ hoc fecerat.
The woman, realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth.33 Mulier vero timens et tremens, sciens quod factum esset in se, venit et procidit ante eum, et dixit ei omnem veritatem.
He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction."34 Ille autem dixit ei : Filia, fides tua te salvam fecit : vade in pace, et esto sana a plaga tua.
While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official's house arrived and said, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?"35 Adhuc eo loquente, veniunt ab archisynagogo, dicentes : Quia filia tua mortua est : quid ultra vexas magistrum ?
Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid; just have faith."36 Jesus autem audito verbo quod dicebatur, ait archisynagogo : Noli timere : tantummodo crede.
He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.37 Et non admisit quemquam se sequi nisi Petrum, et Jacobum, et Joannem fratrem Jacobi.
When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly.38 Et veniunt in domum archisynagogi, et videt tumultum, et flentes, et ejulantes multum.
So he went in and said to them, "Why this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep."39 Et ingressus, ait illis : Quid turbamini, et ploratis ? puella non est mortua, sed dormit.
And they ridiculed him. Then he put them all out. He took along the child's father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was.40 Et irridebant eum. Ipse vero ejectis omnibus assumit patrem, et matrem puellæ, et qui secum erant, et ingreditur ubi puella erat jacens.
He took the child by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum," which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise!"41 Et tenens manum puellæ, ait illi : Talitha cumi, quod est interpretatum : Puella (tibi dico), surge.
The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. (At that) they were utterly astounded.42 Et confestim surrexit puella, et ambulabat : erat autem annorum duodecim : et obstupuerunt stupore magno.
He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat.43 Et præcepit illis vehementer ut nemo id sciret : et dixit dari illi manducare.
