1 In those days John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea	1 In quei giorni venne Giovanni il Battista a predicare nel deserto della Giudea e a dire:
2 (and) saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"	2 Fate penitenza, perchè il regno de Cieli è vicino.
3 It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: "A voice of one crying out in the desert, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.'"	3 Egli è colui del quale parla Isaia quando dice: Voce di colui che grida nel deserto: preparate la via del Signore, raddrizzate i sentieri di lui.
4 John wore clothing made of camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.	4 Or Giovanni portava una veste di peli di cammello e una cintura di cuoio ai fianchi, e suo cibo eran le locuste ed il miele selvatico.
5 At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him	5 Allora accorreva a lui Gerusalemme e tutta la Giudea e tutto il paese d'intorno al Giordano
6 and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.	6 ed eran da lui battezzati nel Giordano, confessando i loro peccati.
7 When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?	7 Ma avendo egli veduto molti Farisei e Sadducei venire al suo battesimo, disse loro: Razza di vipere, chi vi ha insegnato a fuggire dall'ira che vi sovrasta?
8 Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.	8 Fate adunque frutti degni di penitenza,
9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones.	9 e non vogliate dire dentro di voi: Abbiamo Abramo per padre. Perchè io vi dico che Dio anche da queste pietre può far sorgere dei figli di Abramo.
10 Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.	10 E già la scure è posta alla radice degli alberi. Ogni albero dunque che non fa buon frutto, sarà tagliato e gettato nel fuoco.
11 I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire.	11 Io poi vi battezzo con acqua per la penitenza; ma colui che verrà dopo di me è più forte di me, ed io non son degno di portargli i sandali; Egli vi battezzerà con lo Spirito Santo e col fuoco.
12 His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."	12 Egli ha in mano il ventilabro e purgherà bene la sua aia e raccoglierà il suo frumento nel granaio, ma la paglia la brucerà con fuoco inestinguibile.
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.	13 Allora giunse Gesù dalla Galilea al Giordano da Giovanni, per essere da lui battezzato.
14 John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?"	14 Ma Giovanni ne lo distoglieva col dire: Io dovrei essere battezzato da te, e tu vieni a me?
15 Jesus said to him in reply, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him.	15 E Gesù gli rispose: Lascia fare per ora, chè ci conviene di adempire così ogni giustizia. Giovanni allora condiscese;
16 After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened (for him), and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him.	16 e Gesù, battezzato che fu, uscì subito dall'acqua. Ed ecco gli si apersero i cieli e vide lo spirito di Dio scendere come colomba e venire sopra di lui.
17 And a voice came from the heavens, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."	17 Ed ecco una voce dal cielo dire: Questo è il mio Figlio diletto nel quale mi son compiaciuto.
