1 In those days John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea	1 In quei giorni venne Giovanni il Battista e predicava nel deserto della Giudea
2 (and) saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"	2 dicendo: «Convertitevi, perché il regno dei cieli è vicino!».
3 It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: "A voice of one crying out in the desert, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.'"	3 Egli infatti è colui del quale aveva parlato il profeta Isaia quando disse: Voce di uno che grida nel deserto: Preparate la via del Signore, raddrizzate i suoi sentieri!
4 John wore clothing made of camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.	4 E lui, Giovanni, portava un vestito di peli di cammello e una cintura di pelle attorno ai fianchi; il suo cibo erano cavallette e miele selvatico.
5 At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him	5 Allora Gerusalemme, tutta la Giudea e tutta la zona lungo il Giordano accorrevano a lui
6 and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.	6 e si facevano battezzare da lui nel fiume Giordano, confessando i loro peccati.
7 When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?	7 Vedendo molti farisei e sadducei venire al suo battesimo, disse loro: «Razza di vipere! Chi vi ha fatto credere di poter sfuggire all’ira imminente?
8 Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.	8 Fate dunque un frutto degno della conversione,
9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones.	9 e non crediate di poter dire dentro di voi: “Abbiamo Abramo per padre!”. Perché io vi dico che da queste pietre Dio può suscitare figli ad Abramo.
10 Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.	10 Già la scure è posta alla radice degli alberi; perciò ogni albero che non dà buon frutto viene tagliato e gettato nel fuoco.
11 I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire.	11 Io vi battezzo nell’acqua per la conversione; ma colui che viene dopo di me è più forte di me e io non sono degno di portargli i sandali; egli vi battezzerà in Spirito Santo e fuoco.
12 His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."	12 Tiene in mano la pala e pulirà la sua aia e raccoglierà il suo frumento nel granaio, ma brucerà la paglia con un fuoco inestinguibile».
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.	13 Allora Gesù dalla Galilea venne al Giordano da Giovanni, per farsi battezzare da lui.
14 John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?"	14 Giovanni però voleva impedirglielo, dicendo: «Sono io che ho bisogno di essere battezzato da te, e tu vieni da me?».
15 Jesus said to him in reply, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him.	15 Ma Gesù gli rispose: «Lascia fare per ora, perché conviene che adempiamo ogni giustizia». Allora egli lo lasciò fare.
16 After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened (for him), and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him.	16 Appena battezzato, Gesù uscì dall’acqua: ed ecco, si aprirono per lui i cieli ed egli vide lo Spirito di Dio discendere come una colomba e venire sopra di lui.
17 And a voice came from the heavens, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."	17 Ed ecco una voce dal cielo che diceva: «Questi è il Figlio mio, l’amato: in lui ho posto il mio compiacimento».
