NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
When they drew near Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples,1 Et cum appropinquassent Hierosolymis et venissent Bethfage, ad montemOliveti, tunc Iesus misit duos discipulos
saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tethered, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them here to me.2 dicens eis: “ Ite in castellum,quod contra vos est, et statim invenietis asinam alligatam et pullum cum ea;solvite et adducite mihi.
And if anyone should say anything to you, reply, 'The master has need of them.' Then he will send them at once."3 Et si quis vobis aliquid dixerit, dicite: “Dominuseos necessarios habet”, et confestim dimittet eos ”.
This happened so that what had been spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled:4 Hoc autem factum est,ut impleretur, quod dictum est per prophetam dicentem:
"Say to daughter Zion, 'Behold, your king comes to you, meek and riding on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.'"5 “ Dicite filiae Sion:
Ecce Rex tuus venit tibi,
mansuetus et sedens super asinam
et super pullum filium subiugalis ”.
The disciples went and did as Jesus had ordered them.6 Euntes autem discipuli fecerunt, sicut praecepit illis Iesus,
They brought the ass and the colt and laid their cloaks over them, and he sat upon them.7 et adduxeruntasinam et pullum; et imposuerunt super eis vestimenta sua, et sedit super ea.
The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road.8 Plurima autem turba straverunt vestimenta sua in via; alii autem caedebant ramosde arboribus et sternebant in via.
The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying: "Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest."9 Turbae autem, quae praecedebant eum et quaesequebantur, clamabant dicentes: “ Hosanna filio David! Benedictus, qui venitin nomine Domini! Hosanna in altissimis! ”.
And when he entered Jerusalem the whole city was shaken and asked, "Who is this?"10 Et cum intrasset Hierosolymam, commota est universa civitas dicens: “ Quisest hic?”.
And the crowds replied, "This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee."11 Turbae autem dicebant: “ Hic est Iesus propheta a NazarethGalilaeae ”.
Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all those engaged in selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves.12 Et intravit Iesus in templum et eiciebat omnes vendentes et ementes intemplo, et mensas nummulariorum evertit et cathedras vendentium columbas,
And he said to them, "It is written: 'My house shall be a house of prayer,' but you are making it a den of thieves."13 etdicit eis: “ Scriptum est: "Domus mea domus orationis vocabitur".Vos autem facitis eam speluncam latronum ”.
The blind and the lame approached him in the temple area, and he cured them.14 Et accesserunt ad eum caeci et claudi in templo, et sanavit eos.
When the chief priests and the scribes saw the wondrous things he was doing, and the children crying out in the temple area, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they were indignant15 Videntesautem principes sacerdotum et scribae mirabilia, quae fecit, et pueros clamantesin templo et dicentes: “ Hosanna filio David ”, indignati sunt
and said to him, "Do you hear what they are saying?" Jesus said to them, "Yes; and have you never read the text, 'Out of the mouths of infants and nurslings you have brought forth praise'?"16 etdixerunt ei: “ Audis quid isti dicant? ”. Iesus autem dicit eis: “ Utique;numquam legistis: "Ex ore infantium et lactantium perfecisti laudem"?”.
And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany, and there he spent the night.17 Et relictis illis, abiit foras extra civitatem in Bethaniam ibiquemansit.
When he was going back to the city in the morning, he was hungry.18 Mane autem revertens in civitatem, esuriit.
Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went over to it, but found nothing on it except leaves. And he said to it, "May no fruit ever come from you again." And immediately the fig tree withered.19 Et videns fici arborem unamsecus viam, venit ad eam; et nihil invenit in ea nisi folia tantum et ait illi:“ Numquam ex te fructus nascatur in sempiternum ”. Et arefacta est continuoficulnea.
When the disciples saw this, they were amazed and said, "How was it that the fig tree withered immediately?"20 Et videntes discipuli mirati sunt dicentes: “ Quomodo continuoaruit ficulnea? ”.
Jesus said to them in reply, "Amen, I say to you, if you have faith and do not waver, not only will you do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' it will be done.21 Respondens autem Iesus ait eis: “ Amen dico vobis: Sihabueritis fidem et non haesitaveritis, non solum de ficulnea facietis, sed etsi monti huic dixeritis: “Tolle et iacta te in mare”, fiet.
Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive."22 Et omnia,quaecumque petieritis in oratione credentes, accipietis ”.
When he had come into the temple area, the chief priests and the elders of the people approached him as he was teaching and said, "By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authority?"23 Et cum venisset in templum, accesserunt ad eum docentem principes sacerdotumet seniores populi dicentes: “ In qua potestate haec facis? Et quis tibi dedithanc potestatem? ”.
Jesus said to them in reply, "I shall ask you one question, and if you answer it for me, then I shall tell you by what authority I do these things.24 Respondens autem Iesus dixit illis: “ Interrogabo voset ego unum sermonem, quem si dixeritis mihi, et ego vobis dicam, in quapotestate haec facio:
Where was John's baptism from? Was it of heavenly or of human origin?" They discussed this among themselves and said, "If we say 'Of heavenly origin,' he will say to us, 'Then why did you not believe him?'25 Baptismum Ioannis unde erat? A caelo an ex hominibus?”. At illi cogitabant inter se dicentes: “ Si dixerimus: “E caelo”,dicet nobis: “Quare ergo non credidistis illi?”;
But if we say, 'Of human origin,' we fear the crowd, for they all regard John as a prophet."26 si autem dixerimus: “Exhominibus”, timemus turbam; omnes enim habent Ioannem sicut prophetam ”.
So they said to Jesus in reply, "We do not know." He himself said to them, "Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.27 Et respondentes Iesu dixerunt: “ Nescimus ”. Ait illis et ipse: “ Nec egodico vobis in qua potestate haec facio ”.
"What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, 'Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.'28 “ Quid autem vobis videtur? Homo quidam habebat duos filios. Et accedens adprimum dixit: “Fili, vade hodie, operare in vinea”.
He said in reply, 'I will not,' but afterwards he changed his mind and went.29 Ille autem respondensait: “Nolo”; postea autem paenitentia motus abiit.
The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, 'Yes, sir,' but did not go.30 Accedens autem adalterum dixit similiter. At ille respondens ait: “Eo, domine”; et non ivit.
Which of the two did his father's will?" They answered, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you.31 Quis ex duobus fecit voluntatem patris? ”. Dicunt: “ Primus ”. Dicitillis Iesus: “ Amen dico vobis: Publicani et meretrices praecedunt vos inregnum Dei.
When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him.32 Venit enim ad vos Ioannes in via iustitiae, et non credidistisei; publicani autem et meretrices crediderunt ei. Vos autem videntes necpaenitentiam habuistis postea, ut crederetis ei.
"Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey.33 Aliam parabolam audite. Homo erat pater familias, qui plantavit vineam etsaepem circumdedit ei et fodit in ea torcular et aedificavit turrim et locaviteam agricolis et peregre profectus est.
When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce.34 Cum autem tempus fructuumappropinquasset, misit servos suos ad agricolas, ut acciperent fructus eius.
But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned.35 Et agricolae, apprehensis servis eius, alium ceciderunt, alium occiderunt, aliumvero lapidaverunt.
Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way.36 Iterum misit alios servos plures prioribus, et feceruntillis similiter.
Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, 'They will respect my son.'37 Novissime autem misit ad eos filium suum dicens: “Verebunturfilium meum”.
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.'38 Agricolae autem videntes filium dixerunt intra se: “Hic estheres. Venite, occidamus eum et habebimus hereditatem eius”.
They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.39 Et apprehensumeum eiecerunt extra vineam et occiderunt.
What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?"40 Cum ergo venerit dominus vineae,quid faciet agricolis illis? ”.
They answered him, "He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times."41 Aiunt illi: “ Malos male perdet et vineamlocabit aliis agricolis, qui reddant ei fructum temporibus suis ”.
Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the scriptures: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes'?42 Dicitillis Iesus: “ Numquam legistis in Scripturis:
"Lapidem quem reprobaverunt aedificantes,
hic factus est in caput anguli;
a Domino factum est istud
et est mirabile in oculis nostris" ?
Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.43 Ideo dico vobis quia auferetur a vobis regnum Dei et dabitur genti facientifructus eius.
( The one who falls on this stone will be dashed to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.)"44 Et, qui ceciderit super lapidem istum confringetur; super quemvero ceciderit, conteret eum ”.
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew that he was speaking about them.45 Et cum audissent principes sacerdotum et pharisaei parabolas eius,cognoverunt quod de ipsis diceret;
And although they were attempting to arrest him, they feared the crowds, for they regarded him as a prophet.46 et quaerentes eum tenere, timueruntturbas, quoniam sicut prophetam eum habebant.
