1 Then Balaam said to Balak, "Build me seven altars, and prepare seven bullocks and seven rams for me here."	1 Bileam sagte zu Balak: Errichte mir hier sieben Altäre und stell mir hier sieben junge Stiere und sieben Widder bereit!
2 So he did as Balaam had ordered, offering a bullock and a ram on each altar. And Balak said to him, "I have erected the seven altars, and have offered a bullock and a ram on each."	2 Balak tat, was Bileam gesagt hatte, und Balak und Bileam brachten auf jedem Altar einen jungen Stier und einen Widder dar.
3 Balaam then said to him, "Stand here by your holocaust while I go over there. Perhaps the LORD will meet me, and then I will tell you whatever he lets me see." He went out on the barren height,	3 Dann sagte Bileam zu Balak: Bleib bei deinem Brandopfer stehen! Ich aber will beiseite gehen; vielleicht begegnet mir der Herr. Was er mich sehen lässt, werde ich dir mitteilen. Dann ging er auf die kahle Höhe.
4 and God met him.	4 Gott begegnete Bileam. Bileam sagte zu ihm: Ich habe sieben Altäre hergerichtet und auf jedem Altar einen jungen Stier und einen Widder dargebracht.
5 When he had put an utterance in Balaam's mouth, the LORD said to him, "Go back to Balak, and speak accordingly."	5 Da legte der Herr dem Bileam ein Wort in den Mund und sagte: Geh zu Balak zurück und sag ihm das und das!
6 So he went back to Balak, who was still standing by his holocaust together with all the princes of Moab.	6 Bileam kehrte also zurück. Balak stand bei seinem Brandopfer und alle Hofleute Moabs waren bei ihm.
7 Then Balaam gave voice to his oracle: From Aram has Balak brought me here, Moab's king, from the Eastern Mountains: "Come and lay a curse for me on Jacob, come and denounce Israel."	7 Da begann Bileam mit seinem Orakelspruch und sagte: Aus Aram führte mich Balak her, der König von Moab vom Ostgebirge: «Geh, verfluche mir Jakob! Geh, drohe Israel!»
8 How can I curse whom God has not cursed? How denounce whom the LORD has not denounced?	8 Doch wie soll ich verwünschen, wen Gott nicht verwünscht, wie soll ich drohen, wem Jahwe nicht droht?
9 For from the top of the crags I see him, from the heights I behold him. Here is a people that lives apart and does not reckon itself among the nations.	9 Denn vom Gipfel der Felsen sehe ich es, von den Höhen aus erblicke ich es: Dort, ein Volk, es wohnt für sich, es zählt sich nicht zu den Völkern.
10 Who has ever counted the dust of Jacob, or numbered Israel's wind-borne particles? May I die the death of the just, may my descendants be as many as theirs!	10 Wer zählt Jakobs Menge, zahlreich wie Staub, wer die Zehntausende Israels? Oh, könnte ich den Tod der Gerechten sterben und wäre mein Ende dem seinen gleich.
11 "What have you done to me?" cried Balak to Balaam. "It was to curse my foes that I brought you here; instead, you have even blessed them."	11 Da sagte Balak zu Bileam: Was hast du mir angetan? Ich habe dich geholt, damit du meine Feinde verwünschst, und nun hast du sie stattdessen gesegnet.
12 Balaam replied, "Is it not what the LORD puts in my mouth that I must repeat with care?"	12 Bileam antwortete: Muß ich nicht das sagen, was der Herr mir in den Mund legt?
13 Then Balak said to him, "Please come with me to another place from which you can see only some and not all of them, and from there curse them for me."	13 Darauf sagte Balak zu ihm: Geh mit mir an einen anderen Ort, von wo aus du das Volk sehen kannst. Du wirst freilich nur den äußersten Rand sehen; ganz wirst du es nicht sehen. Von dort aus verwünsch es mir!
14 So he brought him to the lookout field on the top of Pisgah, where he built seven altars and offered a bullock and a ram on each of them.	14 Er nahm ihn mit zum Späherfeld am Gipfel des Pisga, errichtete dort sieben Altäre und brachte auf jedem Altar einen jungen Stier und einen Widder dar.
15 Balaam then said to Balak, "Stand here by your holocaust, while I seek a meeting over there."	15 Bileam sagte zu Balak: Bleib hier bei deinem Brandopfer stehen, ich aber will dort drüben auf die Begegnung mit dem Herrn warten.
16 Then the LORD met Balaam, and having put an utterance in his mouth, he said to him, "Go back to Balak, and speak accordingly."	16 Der Herr begegnete Bileam, legte ihm ein Wort in den Mund und sagte: Kehr zu Balak zurück und sag ihm das und das!
17 So he went back to Balak, who was still standing by his holocaust together with the princes of Moab. When Balak asked him, "What did the LORD say?"	17 Als Bileam zu Balak kam, stand er bei seinem Opfer und die Hofleute Moabs waren bei ihm. Balak fragte ihn: Was hat der Herr gesagt?
18 Balaam gave voice to his oracle: Be aroused, O Balak, and hearken; give ear to my testimony, O son of Zippor!	18 Da begann Bileam mit seinem Orakelspruch und sagte: Auf, Balak, höre, lausche mir, Sohn Zippors!
19 God is not man that he should speak falsely, nor human, that he should change his mind. Is he one to speak and not act, to decree and not fulfill?	19 Gott ist kein Mensch, der lügt, kein Menschenkind, das etwas bereut. Spricht er etwas und tut es dann nicht, sagt er etwas und hält es dann nicht?
20 It is a blessing I have been given to pronounce; a blessing which I cannot restrain.	20 Sieh her, ich habe es übernommen zu segnen; so muss ich segnen, ich kann's nicht widerrufen.
21 Misfortune is not observed in Jacob, nor misery seen in Israel. The LORD, his God, is with him; with him is the triumph of his King.	21 Man erblickt kein Übel in Jakob, man sieht kein Unheil in Israel. Jahwe, sein Gott, ist bei ihm, seinem König jubelt Israel zu.
22 It is God who brought him out of Egypt, a wild bull of towering might.	22 Gott hat sie aus Ägypten geführt. Er hat Hörner wie ein Wildstier.
23 No, there is no sorcery against Jacob, nor omen against Israel. It shall yet be said of Jacob, and of Israel, "Behold what God has wrought!"	23 Zauberei wirkt nicht gegen Jakob, Beschwörung hilft nicht gegen Israel - [Jetzt sagt man zu Jakob, zu Israel: Was hat Gott getan?]
24 Here is a people that springs up like a lioness, and stalks forth like a lion; It rests not till it has devoured its prey and has drunk the blood of the slain.	24 ein Volk wie ein Löwe, der aufsteht, wie ein Raubtier, das sich erhebt. Es legt sich nicht hin, bevor es die Beute gefressen und das Blut der Erschlagenen getrunken hat.
25 "Even though you cannot curse them," said Balak to Balaam, "at least do not bless them."	25 Da sagte Balak zu Bileam: Wenn du es schon nicht verwünschen willst, dann segne es doch wenigstens nicht!
26 But Balaam answered Balak, "Did I not warn you that I must do all that the LORD tells me?"	26 Bileam antwortete Balak: Habe ich es dir nicht gesagt: Ich muss alles tun, was der Herr mir befiehlt.
27 Then Balak said to Balaam, "Come, let me bring you to another place; perhaps God will approve of your cursing them for me from there."	27 Darauf sagte Balak zu Bileam: Komm mit, ich will dich noch an einen anderen Ort mitnehmen. Vielleicht ist es Gott recht, dass du mir das Volk von dort aus verfluchst.
28 So he took Balaam to the top of Peor, that overlooks Jeshimon.	28 Balak nahm also Bileam mit auf den Gipfel des Pegor, der auf das Ödland herabschaut.
29 Balaam then said to him, "Here build me seven altars; and here prepare for me seven bullocks and seven rams."	29 Bileam sagte zu Balak: Bau mir hier sieben Altäre und stell mir hier sieben junge Stiere und sieben Widder bereit!
30 And Balak did as Balaam had ordered, offering a bullock and a ram on each altar.	30 Balak tat, was Bileam gesagt hatte, und brachte auf jedem Altar einen jungen Stier und einen Widder dar.
