1 Then Balaam said to Balak, "Build me seven altars, and prepare seven bullocks and seven rams for me here."	1 Balaam dit à Balak: “Élève ici sept autels et prépare-moi sept jeunes taureaux et sept béliers.!”
2 So he did as Balaam had ordered, offering a bullock and a ram on each altar. And Balak said to him, "I have erected the seven altars, and have offered a bullock and a ram on each."	2 Balak fit ce que Balaam lui avait dit, et Balak et Balaam sacrifièrent un jeune taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.
3 Balaam then said to him, "Stand here by your holocaust while I go over there. Perhaps the LORD will meet me, and then I will tell you whatever he lets me see." He went out on the barren height,	3 Balaam dit à Balak: “Reste là près de ton holocauste et moi je vais faire un tour. Peut-être Yahvé viendra-t-il à ma rencontre et je te révélerai alors ce qu’il m’aura fait connaître.” Et Balaam s’en fut sur une crête.
4 and God met him.	4 Dieu se présenta à Balaam qui lui dit: “J’ai préparé sept autels, et sur chaque autel, j’ai fait monter un jeune taureau et un bélier!”
5 When he had put an utterance in Balaam's mouth, the LORD said to him, "Go back to Balak, and speak accordingly."	5 Alors Yahvé mit une parole dans la bouche de Balaam et lui dit: “Retourne vers Balak et tu lui transmettras cette parole.”
6 So he went back to Balak, who was still standing by his holocaust together with all the princes of Moab.	6 Il revint donc vers Balak qui se tenait toujours près de son holocauste avec tous les chefs de Moab.
7 Then Balaam gave voice to his oracle: From Aram has Balak brought me here, Moab's king, from the Eastern Mountains: "Come and lay a curse for me on Jacob, come and denounce Israel."	7 Et Balaam proclama son poème: “D’Aram, Balak me fait venir, des monts de l’Orient le roi de Moab m’appelle: ‘Viens, et maudis-moi Jacob! viens et menace Israël!’
8 How can I curse whom God has not cursed? How denounce whom the LORD has not denounced?	8 Comment maudire si Dieu ne maudit pas, ou menacer, si Yahvé ne menace pas?
9 For from the top of the crags I see him, from the heights I behold him. Here is a people that lives apart and does not reckon itself among the nations.	9 Je le vois du haut des rochers et du haut des collines je le contemple: ce peuple demeure à part, on ne peut le compter parmi les nations!
10 Who has ever counted the dust of Jacob, or numbered Israel's wind-borne particles? May I die the death of the just, may my descendants be as many as theirs!	10 Qui pourra calculer la poussière de Jacob, dénombrer seulement le quart d’Israël? Que je meure de la mort des justes et que ma fin soit semblable à la leur!”
11 "What have you done to me?" cried Balak to Balaam. "It was to curse my foes that I brought you here; instead, you have even blessed them."	11 Balak dit à Balaam: “Quel coup m’as-tu fait? Je te prends pour maudire mes ennemis et tu les bénis!”
12 Balaam replied, "Is it not what the LORD puts in my mouth that I must repeat with care?"	12 Il répondit: “Ne dois-je pas te dire ce que Yahvé a mis dans ma bouche?”
13 Then Balak said to him, "Please come with me to another place from which you can see only some and not all of them, and from there curse them for me."	13 Alors Balak lui dit: “Viens donc avec moi à un autre endroit. De là tu verras le peuple, mais pas encore tout entier, et tu me le maudiras.”
14 So he brought him to the lookout field on the top of Pisgah, where he built seven altars and offered a bullock and a ram on each of them.	14 Il le conduisit donc au Champ-des-Guetteurs, au sommet du Pisga. Il bâtit là sept autels et fit monter un jeune taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.
15 Balaam then said to Balak, "Stand here by your holocaust, while I seek a meeting over there."	15 Balaam dit alors à Balak: “Reste ici près de ton holocauste, et moi, je m’avancerai un peu plus loin.”
16 Then the LORD met Balaam, and having put an utterance in his mouth, he said to him, "Go back to Balak, and speak accordingly."	16 Yahvé se présenta à Balaam et mit une parole dans sa bouche, puis il lui dit: “Retourne vers Balak et tu lui transmettras cette parole.”
17 So he went back to Balak, who was still standing by his holocaust together with the princes of Moab. When Balak asked him, "What did the LORD say?"	17 Balaam revint donc vers lui, tandis qu’il était toujours debout près de son holocauste avec les chefs de Moab. Balak demanda à Balaam: “Qu’a dit Yahvé?”
18 Balaam gave voice to his oracle: Be aroused, O Balak, and hearken; give ear to my testimony, O son of Zippor!	18 Et Balaam proclama son poème: “Lève-toi Balak, écoute! Prête-moi l’oreille, fils de Sipor!
19 God is not man that he should speak falsely, nor human, that he should change his mind. Is he one to speak and not act, to decree and not fulfill?	19 Dieu n’est pas un homme pour mentir, il n’est pas un fils d’homme pour revenir en arrière. Dit-il quelque chose sans le faire? Ou parle-t-il sans agir?
20 It is a blessing I have been given to pronounce; a blessing which I cannot restrain.	20 Regarde! Il m’a pris pour bénir, s’il bénit, comment dire autrement?
21 Misfortune is not observed in Jacob, nor misery seen in Israel. The LORD, his God, is with him; with him is the triumph of his King.	21 Il n’a pas vu de faute en Jacob, il n’a pas perçu de mal en Israël. Yahvé son Dieu est avec lui, chez lui on entend acclamer un roi.
22 It is God who brought him out of Egypt, a wild bull of towering might.	22 Dieu le fait sortir d’Égypte, et lui donne les cornes du buffle!
23 No, there is no sorcery against Jacob, nor omen against Israel. It shall yet be said of Jacob, and of Israel, "Behold what God has wrought!"	23 Point n’est besoin de magie en Jacob, ni de sorcellerie en Israël: car en temps voulu sera prédit à Jacob, à Israël, ce que Dieu prépare.
24 Here is a people that springs up like a lioness, and stalks forth like a lion; It rests not till it has devoured its prey and has drunk the blood of the slain.	24 Ce peuple se lève comme une lionne, se dresse comme un lion. Il ne revient pas sans avoir dévoré sa proie, sans avoir bu le sang de ses victimes.”
25 "Even though you cannot curse them," said Balak to Balaam, "at least do not bless them."	25 Balak dit à Balaam: “Si tu ne le maudis pas, du moins ne le bénis pas!”
26 But Balaam answered Balak, "Did I not warn you that I must do all that the LORD tells me?"	26 Mais Balaam répondit à Balak: “Je te l’ai bien dit: ce que Yahvé dira, je le ferai.”
27 Then Balak said to Balaam, "Come, let me bring you to another place; perhaps God will approve of your cursing them for me from there."	27 Balak dit à Balaam: “Viens, je t’emmène autre part, et là peut-être ton Dieu trouvera-t-il bon de me le maudire!”
28 So he took Balaam to the top of Peor, that overlooks Jeshimon.	28 Alors Balak conduisit Balaam au sommet du Péor, face au désert.
29 Balaam then said to him, "Here build me seven altars; and here prepare for me seven bullocks and seven rams."	29 Balaam dit à Balak: “Construis sept autels à cet endroit, et prépare sept jeunes taureaux et sept béliers.”
30 And Balak did as Balaam had ordered, offering a bullock and a ram on each altar.	30 Balak fit comme Balaam le lui avait dit et sacrifia un jeune taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.
