NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
1 Concerning Moab, thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Woe to Nebo, it is laid waste; Kiriathaim is disgraced and captured, Disgraced and overthrown is the stronghold:1 Ad Moab. Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israël :
Væ super Nabo, quoniam vastata est, et confusa !
capta est Cariathaim, confusa est fortis, et tremuit.
2 Moab's glory is no more. Evil they plan against Heshbon: "Come, let us put an end to her as a people." You, too, Madmen, shall be reduced to silence; behind you stalks the sword.2 Non est ultra exsultatio in Moab contra Hesebon :
cogitaverunt malum : Venite, et disperdamus eam de gente.
Ergo silens conticesces, sequeturque te gladius.
3 Listen! a cry from Horonaim of ruin and great destruction!3 Vox clamoris de Oronaim, vastitas et contritio magna.
4 Moab is crushed, their outcry is heard in Zoar.4 Contrita est Moab : annuntiate clamorem parvulis ejus.
5 The ascent of Luhith they climb weeping; On the descent to Horonaim the cry of destruction is heard.5 Per ascensum enim Luith
plorans ascendet in fletu,
quoniam in descensu Oronaim
hostes ululatum contritionis audierunt.
6 "Flee, save your lives, to survive like the wild ass in the desert!"6 Fugite, salvate animas vestras,
et eritis quasi myricæ in deserto :
7 Because you trusted in your works and your treasures, you also shall be captured. Chemosh shall go into exile, his priests and princes with him.7 pro eo enim quod habuisti fiduciam
in munitionibus tuis et in thesauris tuis,
tu quoque capieris :
et ibit Chamos in transmigrationem,
sacerdotes ejus et principes ejus simul.
8 The destroyer comes upon every city, not a city escapes; Ruined is the valley, wasted the plain, as the LORD has said.8 Et veniet prædo ad omnem urbem,
et urbs nulla salvabitur :
et peribunt valles,
et dissipabuntur campestria,
quoniam dixit Dominus :
9 Set up a memorial for Moab, for it is an utter wasteland; Its cities are turned into ruins where no one dwells.9 Date florem Moab, quia florens egredietur :
et civitates ejus desertæ erunt, et inhabitabiles.
10 (Cursed be he who does the LORD'S work remissly, cursed he who holds back his sword from blood.)10 Maledictus qui facit opus Domini fraudulenter,
et maledictus qui prohibet gladium suum a sanguine.
11 Moab has been tranquil from his youth, has rested upon his lees; He was not poured from one flask to another, he went not into exile. Thus he kept his taste, and his scent was not lost.11 Fertilis fuit Moab ab adolescentia sua,
et requievit in fæcibus suis :
nec transfusus est de vase in vas,
et in transmigrationem non abiit :
idcirco permansit gustus ejus in eo,
et odor ejus non est immutatus.
12 Hence, the days shall come, says the LORD, when I will send him coopers to turn him over; they shall empty his flasks and break his jars.12 Propterea ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus,
et mittam ei ordinatores et stratores laguncularum :
et sternent eum, et vasa ejus exhaurient,
et lagunculas eorum collident.
13 Chemosh shall disappoint Moab, as Israel was disappointed by Bethel in which they trusted.13 Et confundetur Moab a Chamos
sicut confusa est domus Israël a Bethel,
in qua habebat fiduciam.
14 How can you say, "We are heroes, men valiant in war"?14 Quomodo dicitis : Fortes sumus,
et viri robusti ad præliandum ?
15 The ravager of Moab and his cities advances, the flower of his youth goes down to be slaughtered, says the King, the LORD of hosts by name.15 Vastata est Moab, et civitates illius succiderunt,
et electi juvenes ejus descenderunt in occisionem, ait Rex :
Dominus exercituum nomen ejus.
16 Near at hand is Moab's ruin, his disaster hastens apace.16 Prope est interitus Moab ut veniat,
et malum ejus velociter accurret nimis.
17 Mourn for him, all you his neighbors, all you who knew him well! Say: How the strong staff is broken, the glorious rod!17 Consolamini eum, omnes qui estis in circuitu ejus :
et universi qui scitis nomen ejus, dicite :
Quomodo confracta est virga fortis,
baculus gloriosus ?
18 Come down from glory, sit on the ground, you that dwell in Dibon; Moab's ravager has come up against you, he has ruined your strongholds.18 Descende de gloria, et sede in siti,
habitatio filiæ Dibon,
quoniam vastator Moab ascendit ad te :
dissipavit munitiones tuas.
19 Stand by the wayside, watch closely, you that dwell in Aroer; Ask the man who flees, the woman who tries to escape: say to them, "What has happened?"19 In via sta, et prospice,
habitatio Aroër :
interroga fugientem,
et ei qui evasit dic : Quid accidit ?
20 Moab is disgraced, yes, destroyed, howl and cry out; Publish it at the Arnon, Moab is ruined!20 Confusus est Moab, quoniam victus est.
Ululate, et clamate :
annuntiate in Arnon,
quoniam vastata est Moab,
21 For judgment has come on the land of the plateau: on Holon, Jahzah, and Mephaath,21 et judicium venit ad terram campestrem,
super Helon, et super Jasa,
et super Mephaath,
22 on Dibon, Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim,22 et super Dibon,
et super Nabo, et super domum Deblathaim,
23 on Kiriathaim, Beth-gamul, and Beth-meon,23 et super Cariathaim, et super Bethgamul,
et super Bethmaon,
24 on Kerioth and on Bozrah: on all the cities of Moab, far and near.24 et super Carioth,
et super Bosra, et super omnes civitates terræ Moab,
quæ longe et quæ prope sunt.
25 Moab's strength is broken, his might is shattered, says the LORD.25 Abscissum est cornu Moab,
et brachium ejus contritum est, ait Dominus.
26 Because he boasted against the LORD, make Moab drunk so that he retches and vomits, and he too becomes a laughingstock.26 Inebriate eum, quoniam contra Dominum erectus est :
et allidet manum Moab in vomitu suo,
et erit in derisum etiam ipse.
27 Is Israel a laughingstock to you? Was she caught among thieves, that you shake your head whenever you speak of her?27 Fuit enim in derisum tibi Israël :
quasi inter fures reperisses eum :
propter verba ergo tua quæ adversum illum locutus es,
captivus duceris.
28 Leave the cities, dwell in the crags, you that dwell in Moab. Be like a dove that nests out of reach on the edge of a chasm.28 Relinquite civitates, et habitate in petra, habitatores Moab :
et estote quasi columba nidificans in summo ore foraminis.
29 We have heard of the pride of Moab, pride beyond bounds: His loftiness, his pride, his scorn, his insolence of heart.29 Audivimus superbiam Moab : superbus est valde :
sublimitatem ejus, et arrogantiam,
et superbiam, et altitudinem cordis ejus.
30 I know, says the LORD, his arrogance; liar in boast, liar in deed.30 Ego scio, ait Dominus, jactantiam ejus,
et quod non sit juxta eam virtus ejus,
nec juxta quod poterat conata sit facere.
31 And so I wail over Moab, over all Moab I cry, over the men of Kir-heres I moan.31 Ideo super Moab ejulabo,
et ad Moab universam clamabo,
ad viros muri fictilis lamentantes :
32 More than for Jazer I weep over you, vineyard of Sibmah. Your tendrils trailed down to the sea, as far as Jazer they stretched. Upon your harvest, upon your vintage, the ravager has fallen.32 de planctu Jazer plorabo tibi, vinea Sabama.
Propagines tuæ transierunt mare ;
usque ad mare Jazer pervenerunt :
super messem tuam et vindemiam tuam prædo irruit.
33 Joy and jubilation are at an end in the fruit gardens of the land of Moab. I drain the wine from the wine vats, the treader treads no more, the vintage shout is stilled.33 Ablata est lætitia et exsultatio
de Carmelo et de terra Moab,
et vinum de torcularibus sustuli :
nequaquam calcator uvæ solitum celeuma cantabit.
34 The cry of Heshbon and Elealeh is heard as far as Jahaz; they call from Zoar to Horonaim, and to Eglath-shelishiyah, for even the waters of Nimrim turn into a desert.34 De clamore Hesebon usque Eleale et Jasa, dederunt vocem suam ;
a Segor usque ad Oronaim, vitula conternante :
aquæ quoque Nemrim pessimæ erunt.
35 I will leave no one in Moab, says the LORD, to offer a holocaust on the high place, or to burn incense to his gods.35 Et auferam de Moab, ait Dominus,
offerentem in excelsis,
et sacrificantem diis ejus.
36 Hence the wail of flutes for Moab is in my heart; for the men of Kir-heres the wail of flutes is in my heart: the wealth they acquired has perished.36 Propterea cor meum ad Moab quasi tibiæ resonabit,
et cor meum ad viros muri fictilis dabit sonitum tibiarum :
quia plus fecit quam potuit,
idcirco perierunt.
37 Every head has been made bald, every beard shaved; every hand is gashed, and the loins of all are clothed in sackcloth.37 Omne enim caput calvitium,
et omnis barba rasa erit :
in cunctis manibus colligatio,
et super omne dorsum cilicium :
38 On every roof of Moab and in all his squares there is mourning; I have shattered Moab like a pot that no one wants, says the LORD.38 super omnia tecta Moab, et in plateis ejus,
omnis planctus :
quoniam contrivi Moab
sicut vas inutile, ait Dominus.
39 How terror seizes Moab, and wailing! How he turns his back in shame! Moab has become a laughingstock and a horror to all his neighbors!39 Quomodo victa est, et ululaverunt ?
quomodo dejecit cervicem Moab, et confusus est ?
eritque Moab in derisum, et in exemplum omnibus in circuitu suo.
40 For thus says the LORD: Behold, like an eagle he soars, spreads his wings over Moab.40 Hæc dicit Dominus :
Ecce quasi aquila volabit,
et extendet alas suas ad Moab.
41 Cities are taken, strongholds seized: On that day the hearts of Moab's heroes are like the heart of a woman in travail.41 Capta est Carioth, et munitiones comprehensæ sunt :
et erit cor fortium Moab in die illa
sicut cor mulieris parturientis,
42 Moab shall be destroyed, no more a people, because he boasted against the LORD.42 et cessabit Moab esse populus,
quoniam contra Dominum gloriatus est.
43 Terror, pit, and trap be upon you, people of Moab, says the LORD.43 Pavor, et fovea,
et laqueus super te,
o habitator Moab, dicit Dominus.
44 He who flees from the terror falls into the pit; He who climbs from the pit is caught in the trap; For I will bring these things upon Moab in the year of their punishment, says the LORD.44 Qui fugerit a facie pavoris cadet in foveam,
et qui conscenderit de fovea capietur laqueo :
adducam enim super Moab annum visitationis eorum, ait Dominus.
45 In Heshbon's shadow stop short the exhausted refugees; For fire breaks forth from Heshbon, and a blaze from the house of Sihon: It consumes the brow of Moab, the skull of the noisemakers.45 In umbra Hesebon steterunt de laqueo fugientes,
quia ignis egressus est de Hesebon,
et flamma de medio Seon :
et devorabit partem Moab,
et verticem filiorum tumultus.
46 Woe to you, O Moab, you are ruined, O people of Chemosh! Your sons are taken into exile, your daughters into captivity.46 Væ tibi, Moab :
periisti, popule Chamos,
quia comprehensi sunt filii tui
et filiæ tuæ in captivitatem.
47 But I will change the lot of Moab in the days to come, says the LORD. Thus far the judgment on Moab.47 Et convertam captivitatem Moab in novissimis diebus, ait Dominus. Hucusque judicia Moab.
