Jeremiah 37

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Coniah, son of Jehoiakim, was succeeded by King Zedekiah, son of Josiah; he was made king over the land of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.	1 O rei Sedecias, filho de Josias, sucedeu a {Je} Conias, filho de Joaquim, tendo sido proclamado rei da terra de Judá por Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia.
2 Neither he, nor his ministers, nor the people of the land would listen to the words of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah the prophet.	2 Nem ele, porém, nem seus súditos e a população da terra escutaram os oráculos que lhes transmitia o Senhor, por intermédio do profeta Jeremias.
3 Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal, son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah, son of Maaseiah the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah with this request: "Pray to the LORD, our God, for us."	3 O rei Sedecias enviou, entretanto, Jucal, filho de Selemias, e o sacerdote Sofonias, filho de Maasias, ao profeta Jeremias, a fim de lhe dizer: Intercede por nós junto ao Senhor, nosso Deus.
4 At this time Jeremiah had not yet been put into prison; he still came and went freely among the people.	4 Jeremias, que ainda não havia sido aprisionado, andava entre o povo.
5 Also, Pharaoh's army had set out from Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard this report they marched away from the city.	5 Partira então do Egito o exército do faraó. Ao receberem tal notícia, os caldeus, que sitiavam Jerusalém, abandonaram a cidade.
6 This word of the LORD then came to the prophet Jeremiah:	6 Nestes termos foi a palavra do Senhor dirigida ao profeta Jeremias: Eis o que diz o Senhor Deus de Israel:
7 Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Give this answer to the king of Judah who sent you to me to consult me: Pharaoh's army which has set out to help you will return to its own land, Egypt.	7 assim falarás ao rei de Judá que te envia seus delegados para interrogar-me: o exército do faraó que saiu para vos dar socorro vai regressar ao Egito.
8 The Chaldeans shall return to the fight against this city; they shall capture it and destroy it with fire.	8 Voltarão os caldeus a sitiar a cidade, tomá-la-ão de assalto e a entregarão às chamas.
9 Thus says the LORD: Do not deceive yourselves with the thought that the Chaldeans will leave you for good, because they shall not leave!	9 Oráculo do Senhor: não queirais enganar-vos, julgando que os caldeus se irão definitivamente. Eles não irão embora.
10 Even if you were to defeat the whole Chaldean army now attacking you, and only the wounded remained, each in his tent, these would rise up and destroy the city with fire.	10 Ainda que derrotásseis todo o exército dos caldeus que combate contra vós, e que dele só restassem feridos sob as tendas, cada um deles ainda se levantaria para incendiar a cidade.
11 When the Chaldean army lifted the siege of Jerusalem at the threat of the army of Pharaoh,	11 Quando as tropas dos caldeus se afastaram de Jerusalém, ante a aproximação do exército do faraó,
12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem for the district of Benjamin, to take part with his family in the division of an inheritance.	12 quis Jeremias sair da cidade para dirigir-se à terra de Benjamim, a fim de lá se reabastecer com o resto do povo.
13 But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, he met the captain of the guard, a man named Irijah, son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah; he seized the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans!"	13 Encontrava-se porém um guarda às portas de Benjamim, chamado Jerias, filho de Selemias, filho de Ananias, o qual, ao chegar o profeta, deteve-o, dizendo: tu foges para os caldeus.
14 "That is a lie!" Jeremiah answered, "I am not deserting to the Chaldeans." Without listening, Irijah kept Jeremiah in custody and brought him to the princes.	14 É falso! retorquiu o profeta, eu não passo para os caldeus. Não quis porém Jerias ouvi-lo; prendeu-o e levou-o à presença dos chefes.
15 The princes were enraged, and had Jeremiah beaten and thrown into prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe, which they were using as a jail.	15 E estes, enfurecendo-se contra Jeremias, açoitaram-no e prenderam-no na casa do escriba Jonatã, transformada em prisão.
16 And so Jeremiah entered the vaulted dungeon, where he remained a long time.	16 Foi então o profeta atirado num calabouço, onde permaneceu vários dias.
17 Once King Zedekiah had him brought to his palace and he asked him secretly whether there was any message from the LORD. Yes! Jeremiah answered: you shall be handed over to the king of Babylon.	17 O rei Sedecias, porém, mandou-o buscar, a fim de interrogá-lo secretamente em seu palácio. Tens, porventura, perguntou-lhe, algum oráculo do Senhor? Sim, respondeu-lhe Jeremias. Serás entregue nas mãos do rei de Babilônia.
18 Jeremiah then asked King Zedekiah: In what have I wronged you, or your ministers, or this people, that you should put me in prison?	18 E acrescentou ao rei Sedecias: em que te ofendi, a ti, aos teus servos e a teu povo, para que me lançasses na prisão?
19 And where are your own prophets now,	19 Onde estão os profetas que vos prediziam não dever mais voltar o rei de Babilônia contra vós e contra a terra?
20 who prophesied to you that the king of Babylon would not attack you or this land? Hear now, my lord king, and grant my petition: do not send me back into the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I shall die there.	20 Escuta-me, agora, ó meu rei e digna-te acolher minha súplica: não permitas que seja eu reconduzido à casa do escriba Jonatã, para que eu não morra lá.
21 King Zedekiah ordered that Jeremiah be confined in the quarters of the guard, and given a loaf of bread each day from the bakers' shop until all the bread in the city was eaten up. Thus Jeremiah remained in the quarters of the guard.	21 Ordenou então o rei Sedecias que Jeremias fosse retido no pátio do cárcere e que lhe dessem todos os dias uma torta de pão, da rua dos Padeiros, enquanto na cidade houvesse pão. E assim permaneceu Jeremias no pátio do cárcere.
