Jeremiah 37

1 Coniah, son of Jehoiakim, was succeeded by King Zedekiah, son of Josiah; he was made king over the land of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.	1 E Sedecia figliuolo di Giosia ebbe il regno in luogo di Jeconia figliuolo di Joachim, essendo stato constituito re del paese da Nabuchodonosor re di Babilonia.
2 Neither he, nor his ministers, nor the people of the land would listen to the words of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah the prophet.	2 E non ubbidì né egli, né i suoi servidori, né il popolo alle parole dette dal Signore per bocca del profeta Geremia.
3 Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal, son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah, son of Maaseiah the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah with this request: "Pray to the LORD, our God, for us."	3 E il re Sedecia mandò Juchal figliuolo di Selemia, e Sofonia figliuolo di Maasia sacerdote a dire al profeta Geremia: Fa orazione per noi al Signore Dio nostro.
4 At this time Jeremiah had not yet been put into prison; he still came and went freely among the people.	4 Or Geremia andava, e stava liberamente in mezzo al popolo: perocché non lo avevano messo in prigione. Frattanto l'esercito di Faraone uscì dall'Egitto, e udita questa nuova i Caldei, che assediavan Gerusalemme, se ne ritirarono.
5 Also, Pharaoh's army had set out from Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard this report they marched away from the city.	5 E il Signore parlò a Geremia profeta, dicendo:
6 This word of the LORD then came to the prophet Jeremiah:	6 Queste cose dice il Signore Dio d'Israele: Voi direte così al re di Giuda, il quale vi ha mandati a consultarmi: Ecco, che l'esercito di Faraone, che veniva in vostro soccorso, se ne tornerà nella sua terra, in Egitto:
7 Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Give this answer to the king of Judah who sent you to me to consult me: Pharaoh's army which has set out to help you will return to its own land, Egypt.	7 E i Caldei torneranno, e combatteranno questa città, e la espugeranno, e la incendieranno.
8 The Chaldeans shall return to the fight against this city; they shall capture it and destroy it with fire.	8 Queste cose dice il Signore: Non ingannate voi stessi, dicendo: Se ne anderanno assolutamente, e si allontaneranno da noi i Caldei: perocché ei non se ne anderanno.
9 Thus says the LORD: Do not deceive yourselves with the thought that the Chaldeans will leave you for good, because they shall not leave!	9 Ma quand'anche voi disfaceste tutto l'esercito de' Caldei, che combattono contro di voi, e restasser di loro o solamente alcuni feriti, uscirebbe ognun di questi dalla sua tenda, e incendierebbero questa città.
10 Even if you were to defeat the whole Chaldean army now attacking you, and only the wounded remained, each in his tent, these would rise up and destroy the city with fire.	10 Essendosi adunque l'esercito de' Caldei ritirato da Gerusalemme per ragion dell'esercito di Faraone,
11 When the Chaldean army lifted the siege of Jerusalem at the threat of the army of Pharaoh,	11 Si partì Geremia da Gerusalemme per andare nella terra di Benjamin, per ivi spartire una possessione alla presenza de' cittadini;
12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem for the district of Benjamin, to take part with his family in the division of an inheritance.	12 E arrivato, ch'ei fu alla porta di Beniamin, il custode, che era ivi di turno, di nome Geria figliuolo di Selemia, figliuolo di Hanama, fermò Geremia profeta, dicendo: Tu vai a trovare i Caldei.
13 But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, he met the captain of the guard, a man named Irijah, son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah; he seized the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans!"	13 E Geremia rispose: Questo è falso, non vo' a trovare i Caldei. Ma Geria non l'ascoltò, e preso Geremia lo menò ai principi.
14 "That is a lie!" Jeremiah answered, "I am not deserting to the Chaldeans." Without listening, Irijah kept Jeremiah in custody and brought him to the princes.	14 I principi adunque adirati contro Geremia, fattolo battere, lo poser nella carcere, che era nella casa di Jonathan segretario: imperocché egli avea la soprintendenza della carcere.
15 The princes were enraged, and had Jeremiah beaten and thrown into prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe, which they were using as a jail.	15 Entrò adunque Geremia nella fossa, e nell'ergastolo, e vi stette per molti giorni.
16 And so Jeremiah entered the vaulted dungeon, where he remained a long time.	16 Ma il re Sedecia mandò a cavarlo, e lo interrogò in casa sua segretamente, e disse: V'ha egli qualche Parola da parte del Signore? E Geremia disse: Havvi; e soggiunse: Tu sarai dato in potere del re di Babilonia.
17 Once King Zedekiah had him brought to his palace and he asked him secretly whether there was any message from the LORD. Yes! Jeremiah answered: you shall be handed over to the king of Babylon.	17 E disse Geremia al re Sedecia: Qual fallo ho io commesso contro di te, e contro de' servitori tuoi, e contro il tuo popolo, per ragion del quale tu mi hai mandato in prigione?
18 Jeremiah then asked King Zedekiah: In what have I wronged you, or your ministers, or this people, that you should put me in prison?	18 Dove sono que' vostri profeti, i quali profetizzavano a voi, e dicevano: Non verrà il re di Babilonia sopra di voi, e sopra la vostra terra?
19 And where are your own prophets now,	19 Adesso pertanto ascolta, o re mio signore; vaglia la mia preghiera dinanzi a te, e non rimandarmi a casa di Jonathan segretario, perchè io non vi muoia.
20 who prophesied to you that the king of Babylon would not attack you or this land? Hear now, my lord king, and grant my petition: do not send me back into the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I shall die there.	20 Comandò adunque il re Sedecia, che Geremia fosse messo nel vestibolo della prigione, e che se gli desse ogni giorno un pane, oltre il companatico, fino a tanto che vi restasse pane in città: e Geremia se ne stava nel vestibolo della prigione.
21 King Zedekiah ordered that Jeremiah be confined in the quarters of the guard, and given a loaf of bread each day from the bakers' shop until all the bread in the city was eaten up. Thus Jeremiah remained in the quarters of the guard.
