Jeremiah 37

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Coniah, son of Jehoiakim, was succeeded by King Zedekiah, son of Josiah; he was made king over the land of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.	1 Le roi Sédécias, fils de Josias, devint roi à la place de Konias, fils de Joiaqim: Nabuchodonosor,roi de Babylone, l'avait établi roi au pays de Juda.
2 Neither he, nor his ministers, nor the people of the land would listen to the words of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah the prophet.	2 Mais ni lui, ni ses serviteurs, ni le peuple du pays n'écoutèrent les paroles que Yahvé prononça parle ministère du prophète Jérémie.
3 Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal, son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah, son of Maaseiah the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah with this request: "Pray to the LORD, our God, for us."	3 Le roi Sédécias envoya Yukal, fils de Shélémya, et le prêtre Cephanyahu, fils de Maaséya, vers leprophète Jérémie avec ce message: "Adresse donc une prière pour nous à Yahvé notre Dieu!"
4 At this time Jeremiah had not yet been put into prison; he still came and went freely among the people.	4 Or Jérémie allait et venait parmi le peuple: on ne l'avait pas encore mis en prison.
5 Also, Pharaoh's army had set out from Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard this report they marched away from the city.	5 Cependant l'armée de Pharaon était sortie d'Egypte; à cette nouvelle, les Chaldéens quiassiégeaient Jérusalem avaient dû lever le siège.
6 This word of the LORD then came to the prophet Jeremiah:	6 Alors la parole de Yahvé fut adressée au prophète Jérémie en ces termes:
7 Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Give this answer to the king of Judah who sent you to me to consult me: Pharaoh's army which has set out to help you will return to its own land, Egypt.	7 Ainsi parle Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël. Au roi de Juda qui vous a envoyés vers moi pour me consulter,vous donnerez cette réponse: L'armée de Pharaon est sortie à votre secours? Elle va s'en retourner en son paysd'Egypte!
8 The Chaldeans shall return to the fight against this city; they shall capture it and destroy it with fire.	8 Les Chaldéens reviendront attaquer cette ville, la conquérir et y mettre le feu.
9 Thus says the LORD: Do not deceive yourselves with the thought that the Chaldeans will leave you for good, because they shall not leave!	9 Ainsi parle Yahvé. Ne vous abusez pas vous-mêmes en disant: "Les Chaldéens s'en iront pour debon de chez nous", car ils ne s'en iront pas!
10 Even if you were to defeat the whole Chaldean army now attacking you, and only the wounded remained, each in his tent, these would rise up and destroy the city with fire.	10 Quand vous auriez taillé en pièces toute l'armée des Chaldéens en guerre contre vous et qu'il n'enrestât que des blessés, ils se dresseraient chacun sous sa tente pour mettre le feu à cette ville.
11 When the Chaldean army lifted the siege of Jerusalem at the threat of the army of Pharaoh,	11 A l'époque où l'armée des Chaldéens dut lever le siège de Jérusalem à cause de l'armée dePharaon,
12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem for the district of Benjamin, to take part with his family in the division of an inheritance.	12 Jérémie sortit de Jérusalem pour aller au pays de Benjamin y toucher sa part au milieu de lapopulation.
13 But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, he met the captain of the guard, a man named Irijah, son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah; he seized the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans!"	13 Comme il était à la porte de Benjamin, un nommé Yiréiyyaï, fils de Shélémya, fils de Hananya,chef du poste de garde, se trouvait là; il arrêta le prophète Jérémie en disant: "Tu passes aux Chaldéens!"
14 "That is a lie!" Jeremiah answered, "I am not deserting to the Chaldeans." Without listening, Irijah kept Jeremiah in custody and brought him to the princes.	14 Jérémie répondit: "C'est faux! Je ne passe pas aux Chaldéens!" Mais sans écouter Jérémie,Yiréiyyaï l'arrêta et le conduisit aux princes.
15 The princes were enraged, and had Jeremiah beaten and thrown into prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe, which they were using as a jail.	15 Ceux-ci, furieux contre Jérémie, le frappèrent et le mirent au cachot, au domicile du scribeYehonatân, qu'on avait transformé en prison.
16 And so Jeremiah entered the vaulted dungeon, where he remained a long time.	16 Ainsi Jérémie fut mis dans un souterrain voûté et il y resta longtemps.
17 Once King Zedekiah had him brought to his palace and he asked him secretly whether there was any message from the LORD. Yes! Jeremiah answered: you shall be handed over to the king of Babylon.	17 Le roi Sédécias l'envoya chercher. Et secrètement, dans son palais, le roi lui demanda: "Y a-t-ilune parole de Yahvé?" Jérémie répondit: "Oui!" Et il ajouta: "Entre les mains du roi de Babylone, tu seras livré!"
18 Jeremiah then asked King Zedekiah: In what have I wronged you, or your ministers, or this people, that you should put me in prison?	18 Puis Jérémie dit au roi Sédécias: "En quoi ai-je péché contre toi, contre tes serviteurs ou contre cepeuple, que vous m'ayez mis en prison?
19 And where are your own prophets now,	19 Où donc sont vos prophètes qui vous annonçaient: Il ne viendra pas contre vous, le roi deBabylone, ni contre ce pays?
20 who prophesied to you that the king of Babylon would not attack you or this land? Hear now, my lord king, and grant my petition: do not send me back into the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I shall die there.	20 Maintenant, Monseigneur le roi, daigne écouter, que ma supplication puisse te toucher: Ne mefais pas reconduire chez le scribe Yehonatân de peur que je n'y trouve la mort."
21 King Zedekiah ordered that Jeremiah be confined in the quarters of the guard, and given a loaf of bread each day from the bakers' shop until all the bread in the city was eaten up. Thus Jeremiah remained in the quarters of the guard.	21 Alors le roi Sédécias donna un ordre: on enferma Jérémie dans la cour de garde et on lui remitchaque jour une galette de pain, venant de la rue des boulangers, jusqu'à ce qu'il n'y eût plus de pain dans la ville.Ainsi Jérémie resta dans la cour de garde.
