Isaiah 9

1 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone.	1 Il popolo che camminava nelle tenebre vide una grande luce; sugli abitanti in paese tenebroso risplendette una luce.
2 You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, As they rejoice before you as at the harvest, as men make merry when dividing spoils.	2 Hai moltiplicato la gioia, hai causato grande letizia. Gioiscono al tuo cospetto, come si gioisce alla mietitura, come si esulta quando si divide la preda.
3 For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, And the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed, as on the day of Midian.	3 Poiché il suo giogo opprimente, la verga sopra le sue spalle, il bastone del suo sorvegliante tu hai spezzato come nel giorno di Madian.
4 For every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood, will be burned as fuel for flames.	4 Poiché ogni stivale strepitante in tumulto ed ogni mantello rotolato nel sangue sarà bruciato, alimento del fuoco.
5 For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace.	5 Poiché un bambino ci è nato, un figlio ci è stato donato; nelle sue spalle riposa l'impero; e lo si chiama per nome: "Meraviglioso consigliere, Dio potente, Padre perpetuo, Principe della pace",
6 His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, From David's throne, and over his kingdom, which he confirms and sustains By judgment and justice, both now and forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this!	6 per accrescere la potenza e per una pace senza fine, sul trono di Davide e sul suo regno, per stabilirlo e rafforzarlo mediante il diritto e la giustizia da ora fino in eterno. L'ardore del Signore degli eserciti farà questo.
7 The Lord has sent word against Jacob, it falls upon Israel;	7 Il Signore inviò una parola contro Giacobbe ed essa cadde sopra Israele.
8 And all the people know it, Ephraim and those who dwell in Samaria, those who say in arrogance and pride of heart,	8 Lo seppe tutto il popolo, Efraim e gli abitanti di Samaria, che dicevano nella loro arroganza e alterigia di cuore:
9 "Bricks have fallen, but we will build with cut stone; Sycamores are felled, but we will replace them with cedars."	9 "I mattoni sono caduti, ma noi ricostruiremo con pietre, i sicomori sono stati tagliati, ma noi li sostituiremo con cedri".
10 But the LORD raises up their foes against them and stirs up their enemies to action:	10 Contro di lui il Signore suscitò i suoi nemici ed eccitò i suoi avversari,
11 Aram on the east and the Philistines on the west devour Israel with open mouth. For all this, his wrath is not turned back, and his hand is still outstretched!	11 Aram dall'Oriente e i Filistei dall'Occidente, e divorarono Israele a piena bocca. Malgrado ciò l'ira del Signore non cala e la sua mano è ancora tesa.
12 The people do not turn to him who struck them, nor seek the LORD of hosts.	12 Ma il popolo non tornò a colui che lo percosse, e non ricercarono il Signore degli eserciti.
13 So the LORD severs from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed in one day.	13 Pertanto il Signore recise da Israele capo e coda, palma e giunco in un giorno.
14 (The elder and the noble are the head, the prophet who teaches falsehood is the tail.)	14 L'anziano e il notabile sono il capo, il profeta, maestro di menzogna, è la coda.
15 The leaders of this people mislead them and those to be led are engulfed.	15 Le guide di questo popolo lo hanno fuorviato, e quelli che sono stati guidati si sono smarriti.
16 For this reason, the Lord does not spare their young men, and their orphans and widows he does not pity; They are wholly profaned and sinful, and every mouth gives vent to folly. For all this, his wrath is not turned back, his hand is still outstretched!	16 Perciò il Signore non sarà clemente verso i giovani e non avrà pietà degli orfani e delle vedove; poiché tutti sono increduli e perversi e ogni bocca proferisce infamie. Malgrado ciò l'ira del Signore non cala e la sua mano è ancora tesa.
17 For wickedness burns like fire, devouring brier and thorn; It kindles the forest thickets, which go up in columns of smoke.	17 Sì, la perversità brucia come fuoco e divora spine e pruni, incendia il folto della selva, che sale in alto come colonna di fumo.
18 At the wrath of the LORD of hosts the land quakes, and the people are like fuel for fire; No man spares his brother, each devours the flesh of his neighbor.	18 Per l'indignazione del Signore degli eserciti il paese brucia e il popolo è come esca per il fuoco, nessuno ha clemenza del proprio fratello.
19 Though they hack on the right, they are hungry; though they eat on the left, they are not filled.	19 Si taglia a destra, si è affamati, si divora a sinistra, e non ci si sazia, ognuno mangia la carne del suo prossimo.
20 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh; together they turn on Judah. For all this, his wrath is not turned back, his hand is still outstretched!	20 Manasse divora Efraim, ed Efraim Manasse; insieme essi sono contro Giuda. Malgrado ciò l'ira del Signore non cala e il suo braccio è ancora teso.
