NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Hear this, O house of Jacob called by the name Israel, sprung from the stock of Judah, You who swear by the name of the LORD and invoke the God of Israel without sincerity or justice,1 Hear ye these things, O house of Jacob, you that are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Juda, you who swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in justice.
Though you are named after the holy city and rely on the God of Israel, whose name is the LORD of hosts.2 For they are called of the holy city, and are established upon the God of Israel: the Lord of hosts is his name.
Things of the past I foretold long ago, they went forth from my mouth, I let you hear of them; then suddenly I took action and they came to be.3 The former things of old I have declared, and they went forth out of my mouth, and I have made them to be heard: I did them suddenly and they came to pass.
Because I know that you are stubborn and that your neck is an iron sinew and your forehead bronze,4 For I knew that thou art stubborn, and thy neck is as an iron sinew, and thy forehead as brass.
I foretold them to you of old; before they took place I let you hear of them, That you might not say, "My idol did them, my statue, my molten image commanded them."5 I foretold thee of old, before they came to pass I told thee, lest thou shouldst say: My idols have done these things, and my graven and molten things have commanded them.
Now that you have heard, look at all this; must you not admit it? From now on I announce new things to you, hidden events of which you knew not.6 See now all the things which thou hast heard: but have you declared them? I have shewn thee new things from that time, and things are kept which thou knowest not:
Now, not long ago, they are brought into being, and beforetime you did not hear of them, so that you cannot claim to have known them;7 They are created now, and not of old: and before the day, when thou heardest them not, lest thou shouldst say: Behold I knew them.
You neither heard nor knew, they did not reach your ears beforehand. Yes, I know you are utterly treacherous, a rebel you were called from birth.8 Thou hast neither heard, nor known, neither was thy ear opened of old. For I know that transgressing thou wilt transgress, and I have called thee a transgressor from the womb.
For the sake of my name I restrain my anger, for the sake of my renown I hold it back from you, lest I should destroy you.9 For my name's sake I will remove my wrath far off: and for my praise I will bridle thee, lest thou shouldst perish.
See, I have refined you like silver, tested you in the furnace of affliction.10 Behold I have refined thee, but not as silver, I have chosen thee in the furnace of poverty.
For my sake, for my own sake, I do this; why should I suffer profanation? My glory I will not give to another.11 For my own sake, for my own sake will I do it, that I may not be blasphemed: and I will not give my glory to another.
Listen to me, Jacob, Israel, whom I named! I, it is I who am the first, and also the last am I.12 Hearken to me, O Jacob, and thou Israel whom I call: I am he, I am the first, and I am the last.
Yes, my hand laid the foundations of the earth; my right hand spread out the heavens. When I call them, they stand forth at once.13 My hand also hath founded the earth, and my right hand hath measured the heavens: I shall call them, and they shall stand together.
All of you assemble and listen: Who among you foretold these things? The LORD'S friend shall do his will against Babylon and the progeny of Chaldea.14 Assemble yourselves together, all you, and hear: who among them hath declared these things? the Lord hath loved him, he will do his pleasure in Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans.
I myself have spoken, I have called him, I have brought him, and his way succeeds!15 I, even I have spoken and called him: I have brought him, and his way is made prosperous.
Come near to me and hear this! Not from the beginning did I speak it in secret; At the time it comes to pass, I am present: "Now the Lord GOD has sent me, and his spirit."16 Come ye near unto me, and hear this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning: from the time before it was done, I was there, and now the Lord God hath sent me, and his spirit.
Thus says the LORD, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I, the LORD, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go.17 Thus saith the Lord thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord thy God that teach thee profitable things, that govern thee in the way that thou walkest.
If you would hearken to my commandments, your prosperity would be like a river, and your vindication like the waves of the sea;18 O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments: thy peace had been as a river, and thy justice as the waves of the sea,
Your descendants would be like the sand, and those born of your stock like its grains, Their name never cut off or blotted out from my presence.19 And thy seed had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof: his name should not have perished, nor have been destroyed from before my face.
Go forth from Babylon, flee from Chaldea! With shouts of joy proclaim this, make it known; Publish it to the ends of the earth, and say, "The LORD has redeemed his servant Jacob.20 Come forth out of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, declare it with the voice of joy: make this to be heard, and speak it out even to the ends of the earth. Say: The Lord hath redeemed his servant Jacob.
They did not thirst when he led them through dry lands; Water from the rock he set flowing for them; he cleft the rock, and waters welled forth."21 They thirsted not in the desert, when he led them out: he brought forth water out of the rock for them, and he clove the rock, and the waters gushed out.
(There is no peace for the wicked, says the LORD.)22 There is no peace to the wicked, saith the Lord.
