Sirach 23

1 LORD, Father and Master of my life, permit me not to fall by them!	1 Seigneur, Père et maître de ma vie, ne m’abandonne pas au caprice de mes lèvres, ne permets pas que je tombe à cause de mes paroles.
2 Who will apply the lash to my thoughts, to my mind the rod of discipline, That my failings may not be spared, nor the sins of my heart overlooked;	2 Qui donc dressera au fouet mes pensées, imposera à mon entendement la discipline de la sagesse, sans m’épargner dans mes égarements ni laisser passer mes péchés?
3 Lest my failings increase, and my sins be multiplied; Lest I succumb to my foes, and my enemy rejoice over me?	3 Car autrement je répéterais mes erreurs, mes péchés se reproduiraient, et je tomberais aux mains de mes adversaires pour la joie de mes ennemis.
4 LORD, Father and God of my life, abandon me not into their control!	4 Seigneur, Père et Dieu de ma vie, ne permets pas que je regarde de haut,
5 A brazen look allow me not; ward off passion from my heart,	5 et préserve-moi de la cupidité!
6 Let not the lustful cravings of the flesh master me, surrender me not to shameless desires.	6 Que les plaisirs et le sexe ne s’emparent pas de moi; ne me livre pas à des passions impures!
7 Give heed, my children, to the instruction that I pronounce, for he who keeps it will not be enslaved.	7 Mes enfants, apprenez à contrôler votre langage; qui se surveille ne tombera pas par surprise!
8 Through his lips is the sinner ensnared; the railer and the arrogant man fall thereby.	8 Le pécheur se prendra à ses propres paroles, le médisant et l’orgueilleux tomberont dans leurs pièges.
9 Let not your mouth form the habit of swearing, or becoming too familiar with the Holy Name.	9 Ne dis pas à tout instant: “Je le jure!” Ne prends pas sans cesse le Très-Haut à témoin.
10 Just as a slave that is constantly under scrutiny will not be without welts, So one who swears continually by the Holy Name will not remain free from sin.	10 Car, de même qu’un domestique que l’on surveille de près n’échappera pas à la bastonnade, ainsi celui qui jure et invoque continuellement son nom ne sera pas trouvé sans péché.
11 A man who often swears heaps up obligations; the scourge will never be far from his house. If he swears in error, he incurs guilt; if he neglects his obligation, his sin is doubly great. If he swears without reason he cannot be found just, and all his house will suffer affliction.	11 Qui multiplie les serments accumule les transgressions: le châtiment ne s’éloignera pas de sa maison. S’il y manque par négligence, il a déjà péché; si c’est consciemment, le péché est double; s’il a fait un faux serment, il ne sera pas pardonné: sa maison sera accablée de malheurs.
12 There are words which merit death; may they never be heard among Jacob's heirs. For all such words are foreign to the devout, who do not wallow in sin.	12 Certaines conversations mériteraient la mort: elles sont inadmissibles chez les descendants de Jacob. Les vrais fidèles s’en abstiennent et ne se vautrent pas dans le péché.
13 Let not your mouth become used to coarse talk, for in it lies sinful matter.	13 N’habitue pas ta bouche à l’impureté: ce serait pécher en paroles.
14 Keep your father and mother in mind when you sit among the mighty, Lest in their presence you commit a blunder and disgrace your upbringing, By wishing you had never been born or cursing the day of your birth.	14 Souviens-toi de ton père et de ta mère quand tu es assis au milieu des grands, de peur de te laisser aller en leur présence et de te conduire comme un sot! C’est alors que tu voudrais n’être jamais né et tu maudirais le jour de ta naissance.
15 A man who has the habit of abusive language will never mature in character as long as he lives.	15 L’homme habitué à insulter ne s’en corrigera pas de toute sa vie.
16 Two types of men multiply sins, a third draws down wrath; For burning passion is a blazing fire, not to be quenched till it burns itself out: A man given to sins of the flesh, who never stops until the fire breaks forth;	16 Deux sortes d’hommes multiplient les péchés, et la troisième provoque la colère du Seigneur:
17 The rake to whom all bread is sweet and who is never through till he dies;	17 La passion qui brûle comme un feu ardent ne s’éteindra pas avant d’être satisfaite. L’homme qui commet l’impureté dans son corps ne s’arrêtera pas avant que ce feu ne l’ait dévoré. Pour l’homme impudique toute satisfaction est bonne, il ne se calmera pas avant la mort.
18 And the man who dishonors his marriage bed and says to himself "Who can see me? Darkness surrounds me, walls hide me; no one sees me; why should I fear to sin?" Of the Most High he is not mindful,	18 L’homme qui pèche contre le mariage se dit en lui-même: “Qui me verra? Il fait sombre autour de moi, les murs me cachent, nul ne me regarde; pourquoi m’inquiéter? Le Très-Haut ne va pas prendre note de mes péchés.”
19 fearing only the eyes of men; He does not understand that the eyes of the LORD, ten thousand times brighter than the sun, Observe every step a man takes and peer into hidden corners.	19 Il ne craint que les yeux des hommes, oubliant les yeux du Seigneur, mille fois plus lumineux que le soleil, qui observent toutes nos conduites et voient jusque dans les lieux les plus secrets!
20 He who knows all things before they exist still knows them all after they are made.	20 Toutes choses lui étaient présentes avant d’être créées, et elles le seront encore quand elles auront disparu.
21 Such a man will be punished in the streets of the city; when he least expects it, he will be apprehended.	21 Un tel homme sera châtié sur la place publique; il sera pris là où il ne s’attendait pas.
22 So also with the woman who is unfaithful to her husband and offers as heir her son by a stranger.	22 Il en sera de même pour la femme qui trompe son mari et lui apporte un héritier conçu d’un autre.
23 First, she has disobeyed the law of the Most High; secondly, she has wronged her husband; Thirdly, in her wanton adultery she has borne children by another man.	23 D’abord elle a désobéi à la loi du Très-Haut, ensuite elle a péché contre son mari, et troisièmement elle s’est souillée par un adultère, ayant des enfants d’un étranger.
24 Such a woman will be dragged before the assembly, and her punishment will extend to her children;	24 Cette femme sera amenée devant l’assemblée et l’on fera une enquête sur ses enfants.
25 Her children will not take root; her branches will not bring forth fruit.	25 Ses enfants seront des plantes sans racines, leurs rameaux ne porteront aucun fruit.
26 She will leave an accursed memory; her disgrace will never be blotted out.	26 On ne se souviendra de leur mère que pour maudire, sa honte ne sera jamais effacée.
27 Thus all who dwell on the earth shall know, and all who inhabit the world shall understand, That nothing is better than the fear of the LORD, nothing more salutary than to obey his commandments.	27 Ainsi les autres sauront que la crainte du Seigneur est la seule chose qui vaille, et que rien n’est plus doux que d’observer ses commandements.
