1 For great are your judgments, and hardly to be described; therefore the unruly souls were wrong.	1 I tuoi giudizi sono grandi e difficili da spiegare, per questo le anime grossolane furono tratte in errore.
2 For when the lawless thought to enslave the holy nation, shackled with darkness, fettered by the long night, they lay confined beneath their own roofs as exiles from the eternal providence.	2 Gli iniqui credendo di dominare il popolo santo, incatenati nelle tenebre e prigionieri di una lunga notte, chiusi nelle case, giacevano esclusi dalla provvidenza eterna.
3 For they who supposed their secret sins were hid under the dark veil of oblivion Were scattered in fearful trembling, terrified by apparitions.	3 Credendo di restar nascosti con i loro peccati segreti, sotto il velo opaco dell'oblio, furono dispersi, colpiti da spavento terribile e tutti agitati da fantasmi.
4 For not even their inner chambers kept them fearless, for crashing sounds on all sides terrified them, and mute phantoms with somber looks appeared.	4 Neppure il nascondiglio in cui si trovavano li preservò dal timore, ma suoni spaventosi rimbombavano intorno a loro, fantasmi lugubri dai volti tristi apparivano.
5 No force, even of fire, was able to give light, nor did the flaming brilliance of the stars succeed in lighting up that gloomy night.	5 Nessun fuoco, per quanto intenso riusciva a far luce, neppure le luci splendenti degli astri riuscivano a rischiarare quella cupa notte.
6 But only intermittent, fearful fires flashed through upon them; And in their terror they thought beholding these was worse than the times when that sight was no longer to be seen.	6 Appariva loro solo una massa di fuoco, improvvisa, spaventosa; atterriti da quella fugace visione, credevano ancora peggiori le cose viste.
7 And mockeries of the magic art were in readiness, and a jeering reproof of their vaunted shrewdness.	7 Fallivano i ritrovati della magia, e la loro baldanzosa pretesa di sapienza.
8 For they who undertook to banish fears and terrors from the sick soul themselves sickened with a ridiculous fear.	8 Promettevano di cacciare timori e inquietudini dall'anima malata, e cadevano malati per uno spavento ridicolo.
9 For even though no monstrous thing frightened them, they shook at the passing of insects and the hissing of reptiles,	9 Anche se nulla di spaventoso li atterriva, spaventati al passare delle bestiole e ai sibili dei rettili, morivano di tremore, rifiutando persino di guardare l'aria, a cui nessuno può sottrarsi.
10 And perished trembling, reluctant to face even the air that they could nowhere escape.	10 La malvagità condannata dalla propria testimonianza è qualcosa di vile e oppressa dalla coscienza presume sempre il peggio.
11 For wickedness, of its nature cowardly, testifies in its own condemnation, and because of a distressed conscience, always magnifies misfortunes.	11 Il timore infatti non è altro che rinunzia agli aiuti della ragione;
12 For fear is nought but the surrender of the helps that come from reason;	12 quanto meno nell'intimo ci si aspetta da essi, tanto più grave si stima l'ignoranza della causa che produce il tormento.
13 and the more one's expectation is of itself uncertain, the more one makes of not knowing the cause that brings on torment.	13 Ma essi durante tale notte davvero impotente, uscita dai recessi impenetrabili degli inferi senza potere, intorpiditi da un medesimo sonno,
14 So they, during that night, powerless though it was, that had come upon them from the recesses of a powerless nether world, while all sleeping the same sleep,	14 ora erano agitati da fantasmi mostruosi, ora paralizzati per l'abbattimento dell'anima; poiché un terrore improvviso e inaspettato si era riversato su di loro.
15 Were partly smitten by fearsome apparitions and partly stricken by their souls' surrender; for fear came upon them, sudden and unexpected.	15 Così chiunque, cadendo là dove si trovava, era custodito chiuso in un carcere senza serrami,
16 Thus, then, whoever was there fell into that unbarred prison and was kept confined.	16 fosse un agricoltore o un pastore o un operaio impegnato in lavori in luoghi solitari, sorpreso cadeva sotto la necessità ineluttabile, perché tutti eran legati dalla stessa catena di tenebre.
17 For whether one was a farmer, or a shepherd, or a worker at tasks in the wasteland, Taken unawares, he served out the inescapable sentence;	17 Il sibilare del vento, il canto melodioso di uccelli tra folti rami, il mormorio di impetuosa acqua corrente, il cupo fragore di rocce cadenti,
18 for all were bound by the one bond of darkness. And were it only the whistling wind, or the melodious song of birds in the spreading branches, Or the steady sound of rushing water,	18 la corsa invisibile di animali imbizzarriti, le urla di crudelissime belve ruggenti, l'eco ripercossa delle cavità dei monti, tutto li paralizzava e li riempiva di terrore.
19 or the rude crash of overthrown rocks, Or the unseen gallop of bounding animals, or the roaring cry of the fiercest beasts, Or an echo resounding from the hollow of the hills, these sounds, inspiring terror, paralyzed them.	19 Tutto il mondo era illuminato di luce splendente ed ognuno era dedito ai suoi lavori senza impedimento.
20 For the whole world shone with brilliant light and continued its works without interruption;	20 Soltanto su di essi si stendeva una notte profonda, immagine della tenebra che li avrebbe avvolti; ma erano a se stessi più gravosi della tenebra.
21 Over them alone was spread oppressive night, an image of the darkness that next should come upon them; yet they were to themselves more burdensome than the darkness.
