NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 For great are your judgments, and hardly to be described; therefore the unruly souls were wrong.	1 Grandes e inenarrables son tus juicios, por eso, las almas ignorantes se extraviaron.
2 For when the lawless thought to enslave the holy nation, shackled with darkness, fettered by the long night, they lay confined beneath their own roofs as exiles from the eternal providence.	2 Porque cuando los impíos pensaban que podían oprimir a una nación santa, yacían encadenados en las tinieblas, prisioneros de una larga noche, encerrados bajo sus techos, excluidos de la providencia eterna.
3 For they who supposed their secret sins were hid under the dark veil of oblivion Were scattered in fearful trembling, terrified by apparitions.	3 Ellos pensaban mantenerse ocultos con sus pecados secretos, bajo el oscuro velo del olvido, pero fueron dispersados, presa de terrible espanto, y aterrorizados por fantasmas.
4 For not even their inner chambers kept them fearless, for crashing sounds on all sides terrified them, and mute phantoms with somber looks appeared.	4 Porque el reducto que los protegía no los preservaba del miedo; ruidos estremecedores resonaban a su alrededor y se les aparecían espectros lúgubres, de rostro sombrío.
5 No force, even of fire, was able to give light, nor did the flaming brilliance of the stars succeed in lighting up that gloomy night.	5 Ningún fuego tenía fuerza suficiente para alumbrar, ni el resplandor brillante de las estrellas lograba iluminar aquella horrible noche.
6 But only intermittent, fearful fires flashed through upon them; And in their terror they thought beholding these was worse than the times when that sight was no longer to be seen.	6 Solamente brillaba para ellos una masa de fuego que se encendía por sí misma, sembrando el terror, y una vez desaparecida aquella visión, quedaban aterrados y consideraban lo que habían visto peor de lo que era.
7 And mockeries of the magic art were in readiness, and a jeering reproof of their vaunted shrewdness.	7 Los artificios de la magia resultaban ineficaces, y su pretendida ciencia quedaba vergonzosamente desmentida,
8 For they who undertook to banish fears and terrors from the sick soul themselves sickened with a ridiculous fear.	8 porque los que prometían liberar las almas enfermas de temores y sobresaltos, estaban, ellos mismos, enfermos de un temor ridículo.
9 For even though no monstrous thing frightened them, they shook at the passing of insects and the hissing of reptiles,	9 Aunque nada terrorífico les infundiera temor, horrorizados por el paso de los bichos y el silbido de los reptiles,
10 And perished trembling, reluctant to face even the air that they could nowhere escape.	10 se morían de miedo, y hasta rehusaban mirar el aire, del que nadie puede escapar.
11 For wickedness, of its nature cowardly, testifies in its own condemnation, and because of a distressed conscience, always magnifies misfortunes.	11 Porque la maldad es cobarde y su propio testimonio la condena: acosada por la conciencia, imagina siempre lo peor.
12 For fear is nought but the surrender of the helps that come from reason;	12 El miedo, en efecto, no es sino el abandono de la ayuda que da la reflexión:
13 and the more one's expectation is of itself uncertain, the more one makes of not knowing the cause that brings on torment.	13 cuanto menos se cuenta con esa seguridad interior, tanto más grave se considera ignorar la causa del tormento.
14 So they, during that night, powerless though it was, that had come upon them from the recesses of a powerless nether world, while all sleeping the same sleep,	14 Durante esa noche verdaderamente impotente, salida de las profundidades del Abismo impotente, sumergidos en un mismo sueño,
15 Were partly smitten by fearsome apparitions and partly stricken by their souls' surrender; for fear came upon them, sudden and unexpected.	15 eran perseguidos a la vez por espectros monstruosos y paralizados por el desfallecimiento de su alma, porque un terror repentino e inesperado los había invadido.
16 Thus, then, whoever was there fell into that unbarred prison and was kept confined.	16 Así, cualquiera que caía en ese estado quedaba prisionero, encerrado en esa prisión sin hierros.
17 For whether one was a farmer, or a shepherd, or a worker at tasks in the wasteland, Taken unawares, he served out the inescapable sentence;	17 Ya fuera labrador o pastor, o trabajara en lugares solitarios, al ser sorprendido, tenía que soportar la ineludible necesidad,
18 for all were bound by the one bond of darkness. And were it only the whistling wind, or the melodious song of birds in the spreading branches, Or the steady sound of rushing water,	18 porque todos estaban atados por una misma cadena de tinieblas. El silbido del viento, el canto melodioso de los pájaros en la arboleda, el ruido cadencioso de las aguas en su impetuoso correr,
19 or the rude crash of overthrown rocks, Or the unseen gallop of bounding animals, or the roaring cry of the fiercest beasts, Or an echo resounding from the hollow of the hills, these sounds, inspiring terror, paralyzed them.	19 el violento estruendo de las rocas cayendo en avalanchas, la invisible carrera de animales encabritados, el rugido de las fieras más salvajes, el eco que retumba en los huecos de las montañas, todo los llenaba de terror y los paralizaba.
20 For the whole world shone with brilliant light and continued its works without interruption;	20 Porque el mundo entero estaba iluminado por una luz resplandeciente y se dedicaba libremente a sus trabajos;
21 Over them alone was spread oppressive night, an image of the darkness that next should come upon them; yet they were to themselves more burdensome than the darkness.	21 solamente sobre ellos se extendía una pesada noche, imagen de las tinieblas que les estaban reservadas. Pero más que de las tinieblas, ellos sentían el peso de sí mismos.
