NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 For great are your judgments, and hardly to be described; therefore the unruly souls were wrong.	1 Comme tes projets sont élevés et difficiles à comprendre! C’est pourquoi ceux qui n’en savaient rien se sont égarés.
2 For when the lawless thought to enslave the holy nation, shackled with darkness, fettered by the long night, they lay confined beneath their own roofs as exiles from the eternal providence.	2 Les impies pensaient tenir en leur pouvoir la nation sainte: c’est eux qui se retrouvèrent captifs, prisonniers d’une longue nuit, enfermés sous leur propres toits, exilés loin de ton infallible protection.
3 For they who supposed their secret sins were hid under the dark veil of oblivion Were scattered in fearful trembling, terrified by apparitions.	3 Ils comptaient se dissimuler avec leurs péchés sous le voile de l’oubli, mais ils furent dispersés, livrés à de terribles frayeurs, épouvantés par des fantômes.
4 For not even their inner chambers kept them fearless, for crashing sounds on all sides terrified them, and mute phantoms with somber looks appeared.	4 Les recoins où ils s’étaient réfugiés ne les mettaient pas à l’abri de la peur: des bruits terrifiants retentissaient tout autour d’eux, et des spectres livides, aux traits lugubres, leur apparaissaient.
5 No force, even of fire, was able to give light, nor did the flaming brilliance of the stars succeed in lighting up that gloomy night.	5 Aucun feu ne pouvait les éclairer, et l’éclat brillant des étoiles n’osait pas percer cette sombre nuit.
6 But only intermittent, fearful fires flashed through upon them; And in their terror they thought beholding these was worse than the times when that sight was no longer to be seen.	6 La seule chose qu’ils pouvaient voir, c’était un feu terrifiant qui ne s’apaisait pas; et lorsque cette vision avait disparu, dans leur épouvante ils exagéraient encore ce qu’ils venaient de voir.
7 And mockeries of the magic art were in readiness, and a jeering reproof of their vaunted shrewdness.	7 Les artifices de la magie ne servaient à rien, et leur prétention à la sagesse recevait un démenti cinglant;
8 For they who undertook to banish fears and terrors from the sick soul themselves sickened with a ridiculous fear.	8 car ceux qui se vantaient de guérir les esprits de leurs troubles et de leurs craintes étaient pris eux aussi d’une peur ridicule.
9 For even though no monstrous thing frightened them, they shook at the passing of insects and the hissing of reptiles,	9 Même quand il n’y avait rien à craindre, le simple passage d’une bête ou le sifflement d’un reptile suffisait pour les terrifier; ils mouraient convulsés de peur, n’osant regarder vers cet air qui nous entoure et que nul ne saurait fuir.
10 And perished trembling, reluctant to face even the air that they could nowhere escape.	10 En effet, la méchanceté est peureuse: elle se condamne elle-même. Poursuivie par sa conscience, elle s’attend toujours au pire.
11 For wickedness, of its nature cowardly, testifies in its own condemnation, and because of a distressed conscience, always magnifies misfortunes.	11 Avoir peur, c’est tout simplement renoncer aux secours de la raison;
12 For fear is nought but the surrender of the helps that come from reason;	12 moins on compte sur cette aide intérieure, plus on grossit la cause inconnue de ses souffrances.
13 and the more one's expectation is of itself uncertain, the more one makes of not knowing the cause that brings on torment.	13 Cette nuit était issue du monde infernal, monde de l’impuissance; elle s’était emparée d’eux dans leur sommeil et les tenait dans l’impuissance. Tout au long de cette nuit
14 So they, during that night, powerless though it was, that had come upon them from the recesses of a powerless nether world, while all sleeping the same sleep,	14 ils se voyaient poursuivis par des spectres et restaient cloués sur place: une peur horrible et soudaine les submergeait.
15 Were partly smitten by fearsome apparitions and partly stricken by their souls' surrender; for fear came upon them, sudden and unexpected.	15 Chacun restait là où il tombait, immobilisé dans cette prison sans grilles.
16 Thus, then, whoever was there fell into that unbarred prison and was kept confined.	16 Qu’on fût laboureur, berger ou travailleur solitaire, chacun était saisi à l’improviste, sans pouvoir résister; une même obscurité les tenait tous enchaînés.
17 For whether one was a farmer, or a shepherd, or a worker at tasks in the wasteland, Taken unawares, he served out the inescapable sentence;	17 Tout les remplissait de terreur et les paralysait, que ce soit le murmure de la brise, le gazouillis d’un oiseau dans la ramure, ou le bruit régulier d’une chute d’eau,
18 for all were bound by the one bond of darkness. And were it only the whistling wind, or the melodious song of birds in the spreading branches, Or the steady sound of rushing water,	18 ou le fracas d’un éboulis de pierres sur une pente, ou la course invisible d’animaux bondissants, ou encore le hurlement de bêtes sauvages et l’écho renvoyé par les replis des montagnes.
19 or the rude crash of overthrown rocks, Or the unseen gallop of bounding animals, or the roaring cry of the fiercest beasts, Or an echo resounding from the hollow of the hills, these sounds, inspiring terror, paralyzed them.	19 Le reste du monde jouissait d’une brillante lumière sans que rien l’empêchât de s’affairer à ses travaux;
20 For the whole world shone with brilliant light and continued its works without interruption;	20 sur eux par contre pesait une lourde nuit, image des ténèbres qui seraient un jour leur sort: n’étaient-ils pas en eux-mêmes plus pesants que les ténèbres?
21 Over them alone was spread oppressive night, an image of the darkness that next should come upon them; yet they were to themselves more burdensome than the darkness.
