1 But you, our God, are good and true, slow to anger, and governing all with mercy.	1 Ma tu, nostro Dio, sei buono e veritiero, sei paziente e tutto governi secondo misericordia.
2 For even if we sin, we are yours, and know your might; but we will not sin, knowing that we belong to you.	2 Anche se pecchiamo, siamo tuoi, perché conosciamo la tua potenza; ma non peccheremo più, perché sappiamo di appartenerti.
3 For to know you well is complete justice, and to know your might is the root of immortality.	3 Conoscerti, infatti, è giustizia perfetta, conoscere la tua potenza è radice d’immortalità.
4 For neither did the evil creation of men's fancy deceive us, nor the fruitless labor of painters, A form smeared with varied colors,	4 Non ci indusse in errore né l’invenzione umana di un’arte perversa, né il lavoro infruttuoso di coloro che disegnano ombre, immagini imbrattate di vari colori,
5 the sight of which arouses yearning in the senseless man, till he longs for the inanimate form of a dead image.	5 la cui vista negli stolti provoca il desiderio, l’anelito per una forma inanimata di un’immagine morta.
6 Lovers of evil things, and worthy of such hopes are they who make them and long for them and worship them.	6 Amanti di cose cattive e degni di simili speranze sono coloro che fanno, desiderano e venerano gli idoli.
7 For truly the potter, laboriously working the soft earth, molds for our service each several article: Both the vessels that serve for clean purposes and their opposites, all alike; As to what shall be the use of each vessel of either class the worker in clay is the judge.	7 Un vasaio, impastando con fatica la terra molle, plasma per il nostro uso ogni vaso. Ma con il medesimo fango modella i vasi che servono per usi nobili e quelli per usi contrari, tutti allo stesso modo; quale debba essere l’uso di ognuno di essi lo giudica colui che lavora l’argilla.
8 And with misspent toil he molds a meaningless god from the selfsame clay; though he himself shortly before was made from the earth And after a little, is to go whence he was taken, when the life that was lent him is demanded back.	8 Quindi, mal impiegando la fatica, con il medesimo fango plasma un dio vano, egli che, nato da poco dalla terra, tra poco ritornerà alla terra da cui fu tratto, quando gli sarà richiesta l’anima, avuta in prestito.
9 But his concern is not that he is to die nor that his span of life is brief; Rather, he vies with goldsmiths and silversmiths and emulates molders of bronze, and takes pride in modeling counterfeits.	9 Tuttavia egli si preoccupa non perché sta per morire o perché ha una vita breve, ma di gareggiare con gli orafi e con gli argentieri, di imitare coloro che fondono il bronzo, e ritiene un vanto plasmare cose false.
10 Ashes his heart is! more worthless than earth is his hope, and more ignoble than clay his life;	10 Cenere è il suo cuore, la sua speranza più vile della terra, la sua vita più spregevole del fango,
11 Because he knew not the one who fashioned him, and breathed into him a quickening soul, and infused a vital spirit.	11 perché disconosce colui che lo ha plasmato, colui che gli inspirò un’anima attiva e gli infuse uno spirito vitale.
12 Instead, he esteemed our life a plaything, and our span of life a holiday for gain; "For one must," says he, "make profit every way, be it even out of evil."	12 Ma egli considera la nostra vita come un gioco da bambini, l’esistenza un mercato lucroso. Egli dice che da tutto, anche dal male, si deve trarre profitto.
13 For this man more than any knows that he is sinning, when out of earthen stuff he creates fragile vessels and idols alike.	13 Costui infatti sa di peccare più di tutti, fabbricando con materia terrestre fragili vasi e statue.
14 But all quite senseless, and worse than childish in mind, are the enemies of your people who enslaved them.	14 Ma sono tutti stoltissimi e più miserabili di un piccolo bambino i nemici del tuo popolo, che lo hanno oppresso.
15 For they esteemed all the idols of the nations gods, which have no use of the eyes for vision, nor nostrils to snuff the air, Nor ears to hear, nor fingers on their hands for feeling; even their feet are useless to walk with.	15 Perché essi considerarono dèi anche tutti gli idoli delle nazioni, i quali non hanno né l’uso degli occhi per vedere, né narici per aspirare aria, né orecchie per udire, né dita delle mani per toccare, e i loro piedi non servono per camminare.
16 For a man made them; one whose spirit has been lent him fashioned them. For no man succeeds in fashioning a god like himself;	16 Infatti li ha fabbricati un uomo, li ha plasmati uno che ha avuto il respiro in prestito. Ora nessun uomo può plasmare un dio a lui simile;
17 being mortal, he makes a dead thing with his lawless hands. For he is better than the things he worships; he at least lives, but never they.	17 essendo mortale, egli fabbrica una cosa morta con mani empie. Egli è sempre migliore degli oggetti che venera, rispetto ad essi egli ebbe la vita, ma quelli mai.
18 And besides, they worship the most loathsome beasts-- for compared as to folly, these are worse than the rest,	18 Venerano anche gli animali più ripugnanti, che per stupidità, al paragone, risultano peggiori degli altri.
19 Nor for their looks are they good or desirable beasts, but they have escaped both the approval of God and his blessing.	19 Non sono tali da invaghirsene, come capita per il bell’aspetto di altri animali; furono persino esclusi dalla lode e dalla benedizione di Dio.
